Scavenger Hunt from Life #151: Mar 03 - Mar 11

Hi everyone.

Grapes, your icebreakers are super and in oil!

Ai, fun cat toy and the face guard. you lines are descriptive and lively. The shelf is perfect. Your food with the shrimp and leaves made me so hungry and I've a while to lunch.....

I sketched yesterday morning. In the large Conda sketchbook, half page, Micron 03
Number 1, bow

Vivien, thank you. I had the same reaction to that tv interview.

Jo, thanks so much.

Fletch, thanks. I still need to study cars closer. They are a work in progress. :)

Grapes, thank you. Impressive job on the ice breakers. You captured the feel of their large, heavy mass so well.

Ai, love all the cat-related sketches from the cat cafe! Thanks. Your food sketch looks so tempting. Nice!!

Yesterday I drove a friend to the hospital for her cataract surgery. I knew I had a few hours before I had to pick her up. I headed over to a bagel store for breakfast and found a cute spot to sketch inside.
8 - indigo (coffee urns) - watercolors and ink
9 - funny hanging bike

Here's the actual view.

I sketched a few of the customers waiting for their orders. These can count as the start of my 1 Week 100 People. I'm not sure I will reach 100 in a week this year.
10 - casual clothing - ink
11 - hat

Joan - your scenes always make me think "i want to be there!"
Grapes - i like the icebreakers but ice? nope, don't want to be there!
Jo - sweet bow!
Ai - great cats - bummer for the one in the "cone-of-shame" - and now i'm hungry for shrimp!

went to another garden center today
stood in the corner near a cart of begonias juggling near-empty fountain pens (yeah, my bad planning) and a waterbrush

and then i got out a chair, pencil, eraser, and a touch of colored pencil...

Stephanie, thank you! I still find little bit of ice here and there. Excellent begonias painting. The mug sure has interesting mushroom shape handle. 👍

Jo, beautiful drawing of a ribbon 🎀 and thank you for commenting.

Joan, excellent ppl and bike + bagel shop. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Grapes, and everyone, for your kind words.

Joan: Beautiful and exciting bagel shop sketch. Cute people sketch too... your line inks seem quick but effective to illustrated them.

Stephanie: Thanks for sharing the plant view to us... I love plants. Cute jug.

Jo: Beautiful big ribbon in lines. I would have tough time, how to do the curve texture, you did well.

Stephanie, thanks so much. I'm glad to see you were out sketching. You did a great job on the begonias even if you didn't plan well with your pens. Nice shading on that coffee carafe! I'm almost ready to go get a cup!

Ai, thanks. I haven't fully committed to doing the 100 people challenge. I've been too busy to go looking for people and I like doing them live.

Ai - Love the cat café sketches. All I could think was how do they keep the cats off tables where people are eating? 😎 The herbal dip dish sounds delicious but put that plate by me and I am eating shrimp not herbs.

Jo - Excellent hatching on the bow.

Joan - Seeing a bike hanging fro the ceiling brought back a memory. There use to a bar called Tootsie’s on Liberty Ave that had all kinds of stuff hanging from ceiling, walls, whatever. Gimmic was you bring in something they did not have you got a free drink. How were the bagels?

Stephanie - Pretty begonias. Neat mushroom mug. Bet that is a new one for Jo’s collection!

#1 red 2 green - first drew in ink using continuous line. Than added watercolor.

Joan: I think your regular of doing art live in all forms, equips you to do exciting and impactful artworks. Your dedication has paid off.

Fletch: Thanks. Love your tamatoes in two approaches. The red one has the nice plum round shape and shadow... good for food illustration books with vintage theme.

Fletch, good to see you doing a continuous line. Nice addition of the red! I don't remember Tootsies, but it sounds like an interesting place. I wonder if it is still there. Googled it and someone mentioned it on FB.

The bagel where I sketched was one of the best I've had recently! Too bad the place isn't closer.

Ai, thanks. I know all the practice has paid off so much!

Joan, Tutties! I was close. Miss a few things about NY most are food like bagels, pizza and bakeries. Down here the closest thing to a bakery is supermarkets where they bake there own bread.😂🤣

Fletch...nothing better than walking into a bakery or bagel place that just baked something.

Home this morning so I figured I'd do a few items that were best hunted for at home.
12 - orange clementine - neocolors
13 - green grapes
14 - blueberries

IMG_7303.jpeg

15 - brooch/pin (cameo that belonged to my grandmother) - watercolors and ink

IMG_7301.jpeg

16 - triangular (shape of the shrink wrapped boat in the background on the right) - watercolors

IMG_7305.jpeg

Joan. - Going to borrow grapes and iblueberries idea. Neocolors look like pastels. I remember my mother and aunts seemed to always wear brooches when dressed up. Loved cameos. Had I great aunt who had a brooch with lady in silhouette on bone or ivory. It was really pretty and unique looking.

#3 orange - mandarin oranges. Drew continuous line than added watercolor in A5ish size drawing sketchbook,,
Lessons learned - 1 check that permanent ink is completely dry before adding watercolor.😎
2 Use continuous line for the contours not details
3 Payne’s gray and Hanna yellow deep make green not a muted orange.

Fletch, I'm not too excited about the Neocolors. I got them in a swag bag from some art event. The are supposed to be water-soluble but don't blend very well or go on the paper smoothly. Nice shapes on the clementines. They look like they have the loose peels that make them easy to peel.

Joan: Gorgeous works. Love them all.

Fletch: Lovely oranges.

Well I had been very slow... just feel a bit tired....

joan - charming cameo
fletch - love your colors
ai - hope you revive soon

a quick sketch of ostrich and green feathers bouquet for Elegant - makes me think of the clothes/hats that would go the cameo 😊

Ai, thanks. Hope you get back some energy.

Stephanie, thank you. That bottle with the ostrich feather and raffle around it does look elegant! Nicely done.

The NYC Urban Sketchers were at the Metropolitan Museum yesterday. They supposedly just allow dry materials so I used dry watercolor pencils for these.
17 - elegant - dry watercolor pencils

18 - decorative artwork (sculptures and artwork in the display cases) - dry watercolor pencils

Hi All,

Sorry I've been so absent! Great sketches in this hunt!
I'll post the next one tomorrow, but I'll be out all day so it will be later than usual... late morning in Thailand and late afternoon in NZ....

Going to hike and scout a remote place I've never been to before trout season starts next month... I'll try to remember the pocket sketchbook!
