Scavenger Hunt from Life #160: May 14 - 26

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement. At the store where I work we sell odd lots and discontinued bits and one of the regular things is loose Sharpies- 99Cent- when it is quite I mozie over and longingly view the odd colors...if there is combo that I can't resist I am a happy bear.....
JoC ...man, I beeen there....and every moment seems fraught with tension, just don't worry.....keep loving your man.....we are praying for you both.

Ned - lots of hrs of service oozing from the parked truck..nice sketch

Joan and Ai - Loving your watercolor adventures...

Hope to catch something today...

Joan: Thanks. Wowza on your Long Island north shore such a great depth and even more pretty with the egret. So beautiful.

Robin: Thanks. It must be hard for me to work near all glorious art and craft material sources... lol.... I can't stop shopping.

Ai, mmm. I like your leaves with colored pencil. Excellent! So true that nature is good for the soul and the country getaway. The ceramic and clay are so cute. You find wonderful locations to sketch. Applause.

Joan, I like the nature sketch a lot, nice rich color. Fun that the egret stopped by. You are borrowing my habit of not hitting send.

Forgot to say hi to Robin and thanks all for your encouragement.......

Guess what? I sketched on the porch in the Ohuhu book with Micron 03 and watercolors.
Number 1 - something I sketch often but still like to sketch, the bedraggled geranium
Number 2 - flower, there is some mimosa peeking around from the yard next door. A juniper tree in our yard covers most of it. So pretty in pink!

Jo: Thanks. Hello...love your flower and pink tree sketch... they bring me fresh airy feel.

Robin, thanks. I like your idea of finding interesting color combs in the sale Sharpies. The store you work at sounds like it has a lot of stuff that is hard for an artist to resist...discontinued bits of merchandise. Yay!!

Ai, it is so nice to be able to actually sit outside and sketch again, but mobile studio is a life-saver when the weather doesn't cooperate. ;) We had good weather for most of the weekend.

Jo, thanks. I think not hitting "send" is part of my DNA. lol Glad to see the geranium posing again. It seems to be very resilient, which is a good thing since you can pretty much count on it for a lot of items in the hunts.🌹

My friend, Suzala and I decided not to meet up with the NYC Urban Sketchers today. Instead we went somewhere closer to sketch, the town of Oyster Bay. They were having a book fair as well as an art show and that interested us enough. Her husband joined us because he got to mosey around a lot looking at books. We ended up starting with a drawing of one of the restaurants in town. Most of the time there are too many cars parked on the street, but it was closed to traffic today for the fair.
11 - free space - watercolors and ink

12 - good for my soul (being near the beach) - watercolors
IMG_7682.jpeg

Joan, thanks, the geranium has lived through super hot to freezing and back again. Tough. What a great day to be out with a friend. Love the brewery with the barrel tables. The awning and windows are so good. Fun. The beach scene is surely your comfort zone.

Joan, am with the crowd. Love the man’s face. The trinkets are adorable. Like the shading on the duck. On the building with the truck and boat think it says something about you as an artist that you painted across the binding to include the pole and add depth. Great improv on the scallops. Saving a copy of the florist for reference on doing brick. Love the tree in the park painting.

Ai, great hatching on the motorbike. It looks ready to speed off. Borrowed your hatching and color idea for my grapes. Thanks! You really make any of us jealous with your cool cafes and beautiful parks. Had to look up Ratchaburi to find out it is a town famous for its markets selling ceramics and puppets.

Robin, first admired the colored inking than read and “Daily Red cracked me up.

Ned, well down on the truck.

Jo, thanks for updating us on Gene. Write all you want as we want to know.m

#1 Good eat - green grapes. Drew direct in ink the water colored. ( is water colored a real verb? ) Borrowed the idea to hatch and color from Ai. Turns out my bride loves that look.

I think I missed page 2.

Jo, like all things Texan , your geranium is definitely resilient. And nicely drawn.

Joan, love the barrel table look . We have a pizza restaurant the has a few barrel tables but they are indoors and you basically need to be told to look to see them as they are masked by chairs. Who would have guessed you’d pick a beach scene? LOL Our flag really pops against all those greens.

Jo, thanks so much!

Fletch, that man on his computer looked so intense. lol Thanks for all your comments. I like your hatching on the grapes. Your bride has good taste in many ways.

Today I went to spend the day with my sister, Mickey, in NJ. I haven't seen her since December and we've been trying to get together but it hasn't worked out until today. I did drag her out to sketch. lol We wanted to stay fairly local and I remembered a garden we had gone to once not far from her that had a rose garden. So we headed there. Unfortunately, most of the roses were in the bud stage, but I found a few white ones that were open.

13 - the garden made me want to go out for it - watercolors

IMG_7684.jpeg

Fletch, the grapes are scrumptious looking. I like ink and watercolor, too. Sharon has good taste!

Joan, the roses are so lovely. You really capture depth with the dark shading. They look so lively.

Our daughter and husband came out and brought lunch from a nearby Mexican restaurant that we hadn't been to in years. Passed a pleasant afternoon. Again no sketching.

Joan - The flowers are simply beautiful. My curiosity is peaked. So many lush looking greens. How many green paints did you use or are they all mixes?

Ned and Ai - Thanks

Jo - Sounds like you had a nice day even without creating.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

#6 make you want to move ... proctoring a 3 hour exam...if I sit at front of room looking at all students all the time I get stiffed...besides the Uni. urge the proctors to walk around the exam room occasionally to deter cheating...

Ai, you must get tired when you proctor. You did a super job on the sketches. Love the hatching and detail.

Fletch, it was a good day and today I sketched my leftover guacamole. Ha.
Number 3 good drink and Number 4 good eat
Sketched in the large Canson Mixed Media sketchbook with the Micron 03

Jo: Thanks. Proctoring is not that tiring...more of boredom thing esp. if I don't do any sketching. Great job on your soda bottle and guacamole. I love your pen works.... I am thinking too much !

Fletch, Ned, Robin: Thanks so much.

Joan: Thanks..the rose piece is full of positive vibe...Love it...Pls. tell Micky I said hello.

All: Hi

#6 make me want to move -- "Repost again"... Since I have to sit a lot to proctor 3 hours, so it is nice to move around the exam room during and after the exam.

#7 make me smile -- classic cars in general (here is an old mini cooper) ....a bit wonky as I was standing and waiting for Miss Iris to finish her class.

Uhm...for some reason, the system's image uploader does not work on my mobile phone any more...I can only attach the files via my mobile phone ...

I had to come home and upload my phone images to FB, then download my images from FB to my home computer, then post...for it to work... FB was OK of uploading my images but not CreativeSpark ??? Don't know what's wrong with my mobile phone. I will try to clear out old photos on it.

Fletch, thanks. I have sap green and hookers green on my palette. Sometimes I use them alone, but quite often I mix them with other colors too. I don't think I have any color that I haven't mixed them with. lol

Ai, thanks. It is good that I go over once in a while and get Mickey out sketching. She doesn't do it much on her own. I like your intense students taking the exams. The wonky mini Cooper is fun. I don't know if I would want to ride in something so tiny any more. lol

Jo, glad you got some sketching done. Good hatching on that bottle of Canada Dry. Yummy guac! Jerry eats our avocados before I could ever turn them into guac. lol

My plein air group met at the beach in Mt. Sinai yesterday. It wasn't very warm, especially since it was breezy by the water. While I was sketching I ended up wearing a heavy sweatshirt and a lightweight down jacket. All the other artists were dressed the same way...but I didn't need a hat or gloves. lol
14 - favorite (any beach view) - watercolors (Sorry it is a bit blurry. I was too lazy to get up and take a new photo.)

Ai, love the Mini Cooper, you did a great job in a hurry. Fun to see. Hope you have a good day.. Sometimes it helps to just reboot your phone or devise when it does that. They create sort of a memory.

Joan, thanks. I usually just eat the avocados, too. This was leftovers. Nice you got out to the beach. Always hard to believe you are in a jacket and it will be near 100º today. I like the scene with the person in the jacket. I always like a bench to rest when walking.

I sketched on the porch. We had a north wind so it was about 70 and lovely. Door closed and A/C on now!
The bottom of the page from yesterday in the large Canson sketchbook with Micron 03 and watercolors. I scanned it in black and white by accident, but it shows my values were pretty good so showing it to you. It was interesting to see two big guys in black with two little dogs.

Jo, thanks. We had a day that felt like fall...damp, windy, and cold. lol Good capture of the guys walking by with their dogs. Fun to see it in B&W too. Glad you had nice weather to sit out and have breakfast and a sketch this morning.

Didn't sketch outside today, so I made sure to do something inside.
15 - rarely used art medium (oil pastels) - done with oil pastels

16 - frequently use art medium - watercolors and ink (Done as a continuous line sketch.)

Thanks Ai and Joan. Joan, your continuous line work is so good. Palette is fun and so colorful. The oil pastel sketch is good. I find them to be difficult, I don’t have any anymore!

Joan: I must have skipped commenting on the cool barrel happy restaurant at Oyster Bay. The sketch of a person by Oyster Bay beach is very nice too. I am envy of your close to both beach and NYC location. The OP as rarely medium turns out very nice and your contour of your wc palette is so cool.

Jo: What a lovely sketch of two men with their cute doggies. The black-white scan for a value study is a nice extra.
