Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ai, thanks. Our snow hasn't melted yet because it is still too cold. Love the sketch with the dragon in the snake plant.

Jo, thank you. Another sketch that I worked on until it started getting too cold in the car. lol There were 2 teens out on the icy lake sliding around. They didn't stay still like the birds.

Ai, your dragon sketch is cool. Thanks for the mug. Love the coffee maker with elegant spout.

Joan, always fun to see your continuous line sketches. Such good shapes and the color is delightful. Thanks for a mug.
I sketched on the footstool my new mugs with New Mexico designs. Hand painted so each is a bit different. The size is pretty uniform. The copper metal candleholder does not look metal but is. Forgot to take a photo. On my iPad with the App, Brushes.

Number 1 and 2, ceramic and metal

Jo, thanks for your comments. I love the new mugs...wonderful design by your friend! I love ceramic pieces like that. Great job on the copper candle holder. I can just imagine it lit up.

Nothing new from me this afternoon. I did my Italian lesson, 2 more small collages, and then Jerry had a doctor's appt. Apparently I am doing a good job. His cholesterol is good and his AC1 is the lowest it has been since he was diagnosed. He also lost 5 pounds...unfortunately I found them. lol Hope to have some new sketches tomorrow.

Joan: Love your tea-press container and the cup and sugar jar. Very nice colors. Congratulations on working with Jerry to get to a better improvement stage, great job to both of you. It is not easy. I have a big task of improve my cholesterol as well, and I want to do it without taking any med.

Jo: Wonderful digi of the metal copper candle holder. Your star patterns are super neat, esp. the tiny one. The NM cups are fun with various pattern but consistent scheme.

Thanks everyone. You know I like mugs. Ha. It is cloudy and pretty cold early but should get to 60 or so. Better!!

Ai, thanks so much.

Jo, glad it has warmed up a bit. Hoping for that tomorrow. Today was still cold.

I joined the NYC Urban Sketchers at the Met Cloisters in upper Manhattan. I had never been there before and it was a good sketching location.

Ai, nice colorful group of sketches. I had to laugh at your idea of a "simple" scene. Love the way you did the sketch of the vendor with the toys. How great that you got to meet up with a artist friend from Germany.

Jo: Thank you.

Joan: Thanks so much ...LOL, that yellow building seems simpler, when comparing to sketching the famous and elaborate Chinese shrine.
