Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Joan: Bravo on all super sketches to start this Hunt. Love people sketch in the lobby, everyone concentrating. Nice stairs of the opposite restaurant with a white care in perfect form... and now you are embarking on sketching live food...lol... imagine you have to wait to taste those yummy... all are super.

Ai, lol I don't know how you have the patience to sketch your food and not devour it immediately. I had to stop the sketch I was doing of something else and immediately sketch the croissant before I took a bite. I finished the sketch of the food and moved back to the original sketch.

Jo, thanks so much. We were surrounded by a lot of things to sketch.

Wow! Joan abnd Ai got us off to a great start.

Joan, as I scrolled down through each one my thoughts were “Oh this great!” The proportions, perspective and colors caught me in the first. The second the croissant just seem to come off the page then I got to looking at the cool reflections and distortions in the water pitcher. Thinking you had outdone yourself but than the third. The car and the stairs are perfect. The person is in great proportions to the car, doors and everything. Thanks!

Ai, my recent venture into using ink has me drawn to both hatching and line quality. The motor scooters and bike are full of both, the perspective and foreshortening on the motor scooters is ‘spot on‘ as the Brits say.. The bicycle ellipses really sell it. The bike looks like one of those fold-up travel bikes. Thanks!

Jo and any lurkers 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽

Keep sketching and kearning
Fletch

Ai, great job on all the wheels. I especially like the vespas/motorcycles!

Fletch, thanks so much. I'm glad you find so much to comment on in the sketch. This is a photo of some of "the ladies" working at the front window of the restaurant. They were really so good and patient with the amount of time we occupied the space.

Sketching with oils together with my urban sketcher's group at the Helsinki Airport.
Never thought would one day be sketching with oils at any airport but Usk takes you to the most odd places. Good experience 👍. There were sooo many ppl walking around but I found a quiet corner to paint.

Will comment later of the wonderful works you guys have done! 👍 😊

Ai, the stone lion is so special model! Well and brave drawing done! It looks so complicated model and makes one think how to approach: simple shapes or adding lots of detail or only few of it.

Joan, love those house paintings! I admire your colors and details you have in these. But just a bit confused: I'm also wondering same as Fletch mentioned earlier, are we missing one picture and I refer to this post "This is a photo of some of "the ladies" working at the front window of the restaurant"❓
Lovely setup of dishes/silver! Love that painting! Ppl are so we'll drawn! 😍 👍

Ai, I like s lot those colorful sketches of water, river, transportation, flowers and dishes, bikes. I'm especially attracted by your canal sketches 😍 👍.

Fletch, I'm sorry...I went off to find the photo and got distracted. This is the photo of a few of us (out of about 40 people who showed up) who were sitting by the front window of the restaurant off the Ace Hotel lobby. It looks like they put that table top there just for us. I'm off on the left side of the photo. These are some of my friends in the group that I've been sketching with for years.

Ai, you have so many types of transport right there...it would be hard to pick what to sketch. The food looks yummy. I love the inky sketch of the flowers!!! The stone lion looks very fierce. I don't want to mess with him. lol

Grapes, thank you. I thought I had downloaded the photo to my desktop but it wasn't there. So I started searching for who out of my friends had posted it. By that time I already forgot I said I was posting it. lol I'm easily distracted. Now...let me press the post button before I forget.
