Scavenger Hunt from Life #144: Jan 6 - Jan 14

Here's that tree, a chaos of branches and twigs... I kind of gave up on the middle! Nice place to hike today.

Fletch, you have some nice shading there. Looks like you used some of Ai's suggested yellows. To get texture on an orange I usually try to wait until the paint is a breath away from being dry before dabbing on a little darker color.

Ned, trees like that are a challenge because you try to follow the tree shape but get lost in all the branches. It happens to me all the time. You did a great job on the main trunk and those long, extended branches. Don't worry...the branch police don't come and check if you sketched every one.

Ai, congratulations on the sale! What a great souvineer for them to have and remember the location and the day. Lovely painting of the bridge and the area around it. Someone once told me you should always have a price in your mind when you are working on something outdoors. You can never tell when someone will be interested in buying it.

Jo, I like the peeks of color hiding in the folds of the umbrella.

Ned: What an amazing tree and amazing sketch. You did great for such a challenge. I would never know how to do all those intricate and interesting branch. Love that you are happy to go with it.

Joan: Thank you so much for your kind words. I quoted them very friendly price as I did not see it coming and I painted on the back side of another painting, which I had let them know about this. I guess I taped my 5x7 inch on a white back board, so that came handy to put the sketch for sale. It was surely fun. Lovely landscape sketch... wonderful plant textures. Thanks so much for hosting this Hunt.

Ai -- I especially like the water in that one. Neat that your sketch will remind them of their happy visit to Thailand! I'm often impressed how you and Joan and experienced artists are able to catch the "essence" or "feel" or "character" without distracting details... I'll keep learning!

Joan -- I like those colors. I doubt you tried to paint every blade of grass or stalk but it ends with a wonderful impression of place.

Ned - super job on the tree.

Ai - Think you got all the feedback you could want with someone buying your work on the spot. Personally I like how you did the water.

Joan - beach grasses always intrigue. Nicely done.

Using suggestions I got here I worked on the orange some more. The only yellow I used was Lemon Yellow. Originally I wanted to use AI’s layering idea so I painted the initial shape in LY than mixed a couple of oranges to go over it. Thinking dry brushing would add the texture. I think biggest mistake was using LY instead of a colder yellow. So I have added a darker orange and a touch of cerulean for shading on the fruit. Thanks to all for help. I may be slow but I am learning.

Keep sketching
Fletch

Fletch: Thanks. I like your experiment with the lemon, the shadow works. I think if you can save white paper where the light bounce off the fruit as the next step. Keep on your wc journey. I have played with it long time, and I still have so much to learn still.

Ned the old gnarly tree is so good. Love it.

Ai, congrats on sale. Lovely painting. I'm smiling.....

Joan, hour landscape is great. I like how the water disappears into the bushes. Thanks for this Hunt. Didn't get back last night for another sketch. Oh, well. Next time. :)

Fletch, good for you. It sure takes lots of practice for watercolors. I'm very much still a beginner.

See all y'all on the new Hunt.

Ned, thanks. I tried to give an impression of the blades of grass without painting all of them...otherwise I would still be there. lol

Fletch, you did a good job shading the orange. The texture shows nicely. We're all still learning. :)

Jo, thanks. I know time disappears so quickly lately, and then one little thing comes along and the day is gone.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the hunt. See ya in the next one.
