Scavenger Hunt #135 - Oct 26 - Nov 3

Pine Cone, thanks so much.

Grapes, thanks. Lovely painting of your November cactus. The texture on that paper looks a bit like oil pastels. Does it take as long to dry on the paper as it does on canvas? I haven't worked with oils since I had a starter set back when I was about 10...a long, long time ago.

Joan: I am so sorry for your loss but I am glad that you got to reunite with him in Venice. Beautiful sketch on the train and train station.

Grapes: The Rialto bridge bell piece is gorgeous. Lovely cactus flower.

Ai, very cute model and excellent painting!
Thank you for commenting!

Joan, thanks!
Drying time is about the same no matter canvas or paper but as this is thin paper I also use oil paint thinly. That speeds up drying time remarkably. If I got thick blobs of paint some place I blended it so it dries faster as this is just a sketch. I use titanium white and it always takes it's own time to dry, I will try tonight if the cactus is dry (I hope so but I doubt) and then again in the morning tomorrow. To see how long it takes.
If you choose paints that are fast drying (burnt umber, maybe and from whites it's lead white) then you get them dry in couple of hours if it's thin paint. If you add turpentine it speeds up drying time. I didn't use it this time. If you are able to keep you painting in sun shine or warm/higher temps is reduced drying time at least half. It's not sunshine that speeds up but heat. So they're things one can do to make it dry faster but I'd say minimum approx. two hours.
I was surprised l was able to paint on this paper without gesso, usually that's not possible.

Ah, when I was finished with the November cactus painting the Quinacridone Rose oil tube appeared under a pile of canvases. 🤣

Joan - Condolences on your brother’s passing. Will keep you and your family in our prayers.
Had to smile at the window painting again with all those straight lines. Like the light glow and reflection inte nocturnal. Great of the tea cup. Is the shading on the train travelers ink or wc? Love the duffel bag in the seat. To me that makes the painting seem real.

JennieJo 👋🏽

Grapes - like the detail an reflect the bell. Love the cactus flower. Glad you found the Quin Rose

Ai - Kettle looks antique. Nicely rendered.

PineCone - miss you here. Stay safe and keep creating.

#2 metal. Ink in pocket sketchbook. Challenged myself to draw direct in ink. Thought I had some sepia ink but Polar Brown was closest.

Apologies for bad photo

Ai, thank you. I cherish the time I was able to spend with my brother on his trip. We always think we have all the time in the world and then you find out you don't. I like the metal kettle. It probably has some good stories.

Grapes, the tube of paint just didn't want to come out and play.

Fletch, thanks. The travelers on the train were just an ink wash from the pen I was using. I thought it was waterproof, but apparently it isn't or at least isn't on that paper that I used. It was a different pen than I usually use so it was a nice surprise. Nice job on the metal clip...the brown ink works well.

Joan, lovely sketches! Your landscape looks spectacular with all the fall 🍂 🍁 colors!
Here are the results of the drying time of my oils on paper: It has now been 24 h since I painted the November cactus. Green colors are dry. I could close the sketch book, but reds and white are still tacky. I got paint faintly to fingers when I touched it. So, because of reds+white I can't close the book until tomorrow morning. So, total drying time 2 days and I didn't use much oil and as thin layers of oil paint as I possibly could.

Joan - Glad the pen turned out to not be waterproof as it is nice shading. The place sketch is nice and the color therapy is super. Thanks for the kind words.

Grapes - Look at the plus side of drying. You can set the book out on an easel to dry in a spot you can look at it til it dries. A little table art for decoration. Thank you for your kind words.

The next hunt is up but I cannot seem to get a link to work.

Keep sketching
Fletch

Grapes, thank you. Hope the paint is dry by tomorrow.

Fletch, I wish I had known the pen wasn't waterproof. I would have sketched with it more...especially people there. I'm off to get your list.

Fletch: Thanks. Good take on the metal clip. Glad you find time to fit a small sketch in.

Joan: Thank you for stepping in for the no-host slot and hosting this hunt while you were in Venice.
