Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

I gave the Caran d' Ache neocolors another try. I'm not sure if I will bother using them again.

Joan: So nice start of this Hunt. Beautiful building and fantastic outdoor cafe scene. Just wonder, why you don't like Caran' Neocolor?

Joan — What a fun bunch of people in your superb coffee house sketch ! I have the same question as Ai about the Neocolors. I was thinking about them last night (wistfully) and how much I miss using them. For me, they used to be a lot of fun. And your painting with them is absolutely gorgeous. But the great thing about an artistic life these days is that there are so many choices, that we don't have to use supplies that don't quite appeal to us.

Ai — Lovely sketch of the interesting old building. It makes me want to walk around it and see inside.

1 - “book" - library book

In my Drawing Rehab Plan, I'm still working on re-learning how to draw lines. So I decided to try a perspective sketch. I'm sorry it's so small 😳 I didn't mean for it to be. And the bottom apparently has more pages (thicker) than the top 🤪 and it appears warped 😆 But it was fun to do 😄

I showed the sketch with my trusty Pentel pencil to show how crazy small the sketch turned out to be (oops!)

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)

— cheap Pen Gear sketchbook (WalMart)

— freehand……. I don't use a ruler to make lines, but rulers are valid artistic tools, and I don't wish to discourage their use.

Note: One photo was taken indoors and the other outside (sunny day).

Ai & Pine Cone, I feel that the Neocolors on their own don't cover smoothly. I would probably like using them better in mixed media pieces which I rarely do. They do provide a lot of texture which can be good at times. I don't think it is worth keeping them in my normal painting backpack. I hate lugging around things that I know I won't really use all the time.

Ai, good job on the arched windows in your building sketch.

Pine Cone, I love your shading on that tiny book. You did a great job on the lines too.

PineCone: Thanks. Cool book sketch... did not realize its tininess.

Joan: Thanks for your insight of Neocolors. I also have one set, but rarely use.... now I have to give it a try before donating them.

Joan, love the color in first. Very soft which is different from your normal style as well as no pen work. The café sketch is great love the way you did reflections in the windows.

Ai, I am with Pine Cone the building looks like it’s calling to be explored. The awnings . The peaked roof. The curved windows.

Pine Cone, you are being too critical. Your line work is great. The shading spot on. Love how you did the page lines at the spine and the opening. The bit of ‘warp’ you pointed out is because the angle of the line at the top of the book is not a perfect match angle at the bottom. You have the perspective angle down pat but the angle from horizontal is off just a bit. Few people would have even noticed that if you did not point it out. And for a small sketch you have a lot of implied detail that really sells it.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Joan — Thanks so much ! Also, I understand what you mean about the Neocolors. I’ve been going back to both your paintings, and they’re just so beautiful….. In the coffee shop one, I failed to mention how captivated I was by the colors throughout. Really special.

Ai — Thanks so much ! I hope you have fun with your Neocolors soon !

Fletch — Thank you so much ! I really appreciate your kind comments. When I sketched it, I kept trying to figure out where I went wrong, and failed 🙈 But by going back and forth between reading your comments and looking at the sketch, I finally see what you explained. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😂
