September 2024 Water Media Challenge- Come join the fun!

Yes, it was from a live feed streaming of owls that year. There are different locations where they try and if they get lucky the owls set up a nest. They put 24 hour cameras on them, including night vision so we can see their progress from finding and preparing a nest, finding a mate, till the babies fly off for good. This was a photo capture of the live stream. So I think that counts as mine. you’re free to use it.

Interesting story behind this photo and thanks! 🙏 They are so cute group. If I manage to find time to paint it, I will post it in oils.

PaintBoss, is the white dog you're working on your own dog?
Tremendously beautiful dog and photo so inviting waiting to be painted!

I read in your answer earlier that you started painting with water medium after you were working long time with oils and that the change to challenging water medium was quite hard work. It's interesting that you wanted to do all that effort to learn a new medium. Just makes me think of my situation and where I am now with gouache. I have also so much more to learn with oils. Looking for information to resolve problems with oils continuously.

Yep, that’s our little dog. He’s four years old. He’s a real little gentleman. Very gentle. A Pomeranian poodle cross who they said was an accidental breeding. his hair grows so long he looks like Farrah Fawcett!
I did oils for a little while, not too long. I was reacting so badly to oils that I had to change. Even some acrylics at the time would really bother me. Both affected skin and breathing. I don’t need done it for a few years although I did commissions. I loved oil! I found the other mediums, a little harder, but clean up was easier!🙂

Omg, he's cute! 🥰
Name?

Because of my asthma I wouldn't be able to paint with cheap brands so mostly I buy Old Holland oil colors but also some others. I can manage with oil colors but not at all acrylic, they smell horrib. 🤷

Oh what a little sweetie! What's his name?

Finn, the Finnster! Mr. Finn. 🙂
Years ago, I found the acrylic paints were terrible for my breathing before I realized I had asthma. There’s some now that don’t bother me unless I’m doing a massive size painting, especially if I’m using lots of medium. They have improved a lot, but it really depends on the brand. And for oil I have heard Old Holland is good. But I can’t handle turps. There are some oil painters that are bothered who say it’s the turps that is the culprit. And they have kept up with oil painting without using any turpentine. They don’t use glazes either. Its straight up paint only.

PaintBoss, what's the history behind Finn's name? Curious name!
When I was 18 I had acrylics paints, did couple of paintings with them. It was easy to paint with them but.. the smell was not good. As you said that was long time ago.
I travelled to a cabin and it takes me long now to write respond, sorry ..

Oh, I hope you have fun at the cabin.
There’s not much of a history with Finn’s name. (My daughter surprised me with a puppy after I lost my beloved Pomeranian from old age. She named him.) But Finn is used as a boy’s name. I’ve only met one man named Finn. Know of a few children named Finn, and many pets recently. I’m guessing that it’s probably been on a current TV show. We often see a surge names if it’s on popular shows.

Christine - My son's beautiful black Labrador is named Finn. His full name is Finbar which Im told is Irish. He is a huge, gentle, boy. He is 14 years old now but hes such a very good boy - our beloved Finn!

Oh what a handsome boy! It is so cute how they try to fit into smaller spaces. Like one’s lap! 🙂 He has reached a grand old age for a lab. Good for him.
Thank you for sharing.

PaintBoss, your Finn's name caught my eye because my people here are, we are Finns, 😆 (nationality of Finnish people) so I thought if there's a connection.
Vivien, yes I've heard Finbar is Irish.

Thats so true and cute Grapes. My best friend is Finnish background. Wonderful lady and extended family. They love their sauna! Especially up at the cottage which they call camp. The warmest, caring people. Smart, involved with their community. Do you have a lot of birch trees where you are? Because I remember my friend commenting how much they love the birch trees way up north at their camp as it reminds them of Home. It was her grandparents generation that came over to Canada I think. A lot of Finns settled in northern Ontario I am told. Not scared of snow and the cold!🙂

PaintBoss, yes lots of birch trees. Even from my studio view in Helsinki it's all birches. Whatever direction I go, I find birches but also lots of christmas trees (is it bruce?) and pine trees.
LoL, I've known two people in my life that don't have sauna here in Finland, one was an older neighbor lady I'm my childhood and she didn't have sauna but she came to my house to sauna every Saturday. So, actually she also had sauna, kind of. Everyone has sauna. I find my sauna quite a healer for asthma! Because of asthma I couldn't live without even if I moved to Spain I would build my own sauna there 😃 summertime in Spain IS sauna outside but wintertime can be cold. The Finnish grandparents that moved to US or Canada were mostly escaping war/hunger years of 1800 I was told. I have Finnish speaking relatives (they learned it from their parents at home) in Ohio and visited them once when I was a high school senior.

KreativeK, I like your poppies. I keep telling myself to try the background wash before painting in the details but I never seem to get brave enough! Someday. Love how this came out, your capture of the light and the variety of color.

Sanlynn, I like your house on the hill. Nice work with shadows and the rocks in the foreground.

Lovely sunset colors on yours Ellen. The cliff idea worked well.

Christine, I love your little white dog. Such a lovely sparkle in his eye.

Moscatel, I like your owls. I don't work in gouache but I always start with a pencil sketch.

Moscatel, there are several people in my art class that paint with water soluable oils that don't give off the fumes that conventional oils do. Maybe you could even post your results here for these challenges since you use water when painting. I don't think anyone would mind.

Thank you ams!
Well, I haven’t been able to contribute much and I won’t be for a little bit as I’ve taken another bad second fall. We are doing lots of things to try to avoid this, but due the nature of things it’s hard to do.
I have now injured myself on the other side of my body so after 2 bad falls in three weeks I’m pretty weak, with pain everywhere etc. So I say this just so everyone understands why I haven’t been able to do much on this challenge. But I am around to comment on the boards and I look forward to seeing other’s work.
We’re almost done for the month. I won’t be able to do a challenge next month. I’m still doing the abstract challenge which is ongoing and I’ve started a Christmas card trade before this which I hope I can get to in the next little while. So we will need a volunteer to host a media challenge for October. It is a lot of fun and it’s not too much work to do. I recommend it.
