Everyone - When I reread my last post this morning (the one with the tumbleweed), I realized that I should have been more clear about how I acquired the bright blue tape to secure my sketch while I photographed it in the wind.
As I mentioned, I went to a nearby business. I said they “loaned” me the blue tape. I meant it in the same way as when people ask a neighbor if they can “borrow” a cup of sugar.
However, this morning, I realized that it sounds like I stole the tape. However, I did
NOT steal it.
(More on that below.)
What I forget (every day) is that the stereotype of a homeless person is that “they” are thieves and addicts of some kind. Unfortunately, some people (both homeless and not homeless) have these kinds of very difficult challenges in their lives.
However, as in all life, every homeless person is a totally unique individual.
In my case, I became homeless through no fault of my own. Rather I came under unprovoked hate-fueled attack from multiple directions simultaneously, and ended up homeless as a result. (A story too long to tell here.)
However, let me also be clear: I’ve never had an addiction. I’ve never used drugs, not even to experiment as a youth when my friends tried a few things. I abstained completely. Although I’ve read that alcohol consumption in moderation can be a healthy choice, I do not drink. (I dislike the taste.) I don’t need painkillers and only use regular strength Advil and Tylenol in the rare times when I need help with pain. I don’t use or need any other medical drugs. I don’t ever steal anything from anyone. And even though my parents were chain smokers, I’ve never smoked a cigarette (or anything else) in my entire life. Not even once. I’ve never even held one in my hand. Not even when a friend decided to try it “for fun”.

Here’s how I acquired the bright blue tape: I went to a store near where I sat to draw the tumbleweed. I showed an associate there what I was trying to do and asked her if there was any Scotch tape in the back office I could borrow. She was very kind, and ended up offering me this bright blue painter’s tape from an almost empty roll.
