Scavenger Hunt from Life #165: Jul 13- 25

Robin, I like your ceramic doll/jug?? Fun to see. Yummy pepper and pear. I hadn't noticed your signature. Fun!!!!

3 - “something dull/mundane/common” - mini tumbleweed

Since I’m still in the first phase of my Drawing Rehab Plan, which means I’m just trying to re-learn how to draw lines and circles, I decided I should try a continuous line sketch, like you guys have been doing recently.

In the past, the only continuous line drawings I did were blind contours with eyes closed. They were hilarious. But this is my first attempt with eyes open, and with looking at the object as I drew it.

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)

— Cheap sketchbook by PenGear (from WalMart)

— freehand

It was windy, and so I had to clip the tumbleweed tendril to my clipboard while I tried to draw it 🤪 Then, when I was done sketching, I had trouble taking a picture cause everything was blowing away. I lost the tumbleweed in the end, and had to go to a nearby store, where they “loaned” me some tape to tape my sketch to my clipboard so I could get a pic 😅

So the blue in the sketch is the tape where I didn’t want to crop the image further. And I drew beyond the perforations, so I had to leave the shreds on the edge, and didn’t crop them in the image either 😂

Jade, you sort of give up control with the continuous line sketches. You did well.

Jo, thanks so much. I've been trying to pull out some materials that I never use, like the crazy pencil. It is good to play once in a while.

Ai, love the sock sketch. It is not easy to sketch yourself like that.

Robin, fun ceramic statue with the veg and fruit. Nice combination.

Pine Cone, it must have been hard to control everything in the wind and try to do a continuous line at the same time. I like your result!

This was done for the plein air paint out I'm involved with.
16 - free space #2 - watercolor

Today I went to the arboretum with my plein air group. We sketched in the dahlia garden.
17 - flowers - watercolors

Pine Cone, you had a plain air adventure for sure! One reason I love it. Your result is so lively and lovely. Applause.

Joan, thanks. Your colors really fascinate me lately. Your buildings are amazing and the flowers just gorgeous.

No sketching today. Busy week with Dr. check ups and dentist. Back sometime with sketches.

Robin 👋 thanks! love your flowing watercolour pic. I'm falling in love with watercolours from all the shares here.

Ai - the sock drawing is good! I always find legs hard to do.

Joan - beautiful pictures 👌 do you sell any of your art?

Jo - thanks! Now I've found tutorials on YT, I'm really enjoying the animals and making progress and learning. Yep, Joan definitely gives me something to work towards with continuous lines!

Everyone - When I reread my last post this morning (the one with the tumbleweed), I realized that I should have been more clear about how I acquired the bright blue tape to secure my sketch while I photographed it in the wind.

As I mentioned, I went to a nearby business. I said they “loaned” me the blue tape. I meant it in the same way as when people ask a neighbor if they can “borrow” a cup of sugar.

However, this morning, I realized that it sounds like I stole the tape. However, I did NOT steal it. (More on that below.)

What I forget (every day) is that the stereotype of a homeless person is that “they” are thieves and addicts of some kind. Unfortunately, some people (both homeless and not homeless) have these kinds of very difficult challenges in their lives.

However, as in all life, every homeless person is a totally unique individual.

In my case, I became homeless through no fault of my own. Rather I came under unprovoked hate-fueled attack from multiple directions simultaneously, and ended up homeless as a result. (A story too long to tell here.)

However, let me also be clear: I’ve never had an addiction. I’ve never used drugs, not even to experiment as a youth when my friends tried a few things. I abstained completely. Although I’ve read that alcohol consumption in moderation can be a healthy choice, I do not drink. (I dislike the taste.) I don’t need painkillers and only use regular strength Advil and Tylenol in the rare times when I need help with pain. I don’t use or need any other medical drugs. I don’t ever steal anything from anyone. And even though my parents were chain smokers, I’ve never smoked a cigarette (or anything else) in my entire life. Not even once. I’ve never even held one in my hand. Not even when a friend decided to try it “for fun”.

———————————

Here’s how I acquired the bright blue tape: I went to a store near where I sat to draw the tumbleweed. I showed an associate there what I was trying to do and asked her if there was any Scotch tape in the back office I could borrow. She was very kind, and ended up offering me this bright blue painter’s tape from an almost empty roll.

Jade: Thanks. Nice cup.

Robin: Wonderful still-life, esp. the ceramic doll.

Joan: Thanks. Such a wonderful work in freespace#2, the flowers are nice too.

Jo, PineCone: Thanks.

Pinecone: the tumbleweed is a simple elegance.

Pine Cone - sorry I realised I didn't reply earlier to your post earlier (nice clear sketch!). I've just read your more recent one and wanted to say firstly, sorry to hear about the troubles you have experienced 😔 secondly I didn't think that reading your post either. I understand wanting to clarify though. ❤️

Pinecone : Bless you for coming back to art and share it with us. I think it takes strength to be open about our shortcoming regardless of how it happened to us. And it takes even more strength to be positive and keep moving forward.

#1 another take of the same building, 10 days later....
It was a challenging environment to sketch, no table, busy sidewalk, tons of traffic noise and smog, some walking by people stopping and stare at me sketching...but today I had a kind food vendor who loaned me a plastic stool to sit on this busy side walk. In addition, she had remembered me from 10 days ago sketching here...she said so positive words of my humble sketch last time and same for today. Today I finished 90% at the spot, later I said goodbye to her and walked to a nearby air-conditioned cafe to finish more with black fountain-pen ink lines, and some Tom-Bow dark ink brush pen for more shadow....done with pencil+wc+fountain-pen ink+ Tom-Bow brush pen...about 20 minutes...

Jo, thanks. Hope you catch up on all your appointments so you can enjoy some sketch time.

Jade, thanks. I do sell my work. I have some of it in a local shop and I display work with the art groups I belong to.

Pine Cone, your original statement didn't make it sound like you stole the tape. I am glad you found someone helpful who gave you the blue tape. She must have recognized the artist in you...besides, if you are as kind in your regular life as you are here it is no wonder she was helpful. You have gone through a very rough patch in your life, but your determination and spirit have shone through.

(Once again I forgot to "post reply" yesterday.lol)

Ai, I'm glad the woman helped you out with a stool to sit on. I have such a hard time standing and sketching. Thanks for showing us the progress shots of your sketch. You added a lot of details to this. Nicely done!

Oh lots of fun and interesting art posted the last few days. Been sidetracked by RL with little time to draw. I’m hosting the next Hunt and will post this evening,

Hi all 👋

I love your building Ai. Really beautiful. And your vase with potted plant. Lovely greens. 💚 You have a really good eye for watercolour.

Joan. I was looking at what you're contributing here and how many people would love the work you do, even the "quick" ones. Especially for local to where you sketch.😊

Robin - gorgeous ink. I'll have to try some different colours then I go supply shopping. The book looks very "papery" like you could flick the pages.

Fletch - I'll check in later for that then.

❤️
