  • Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

    https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Hi, Vivian, Ai, and Jo!

Ai, you are off to a quick start with your lamp, sticky rice heart, and car. Nice lines on the car's side view.

I was home all day yesterday and somehow never got around to sketching anything. I cleaned (a little bit), cooked, and made some collage papers after watching some collage videos. Hopefully I'll get something done today.

Hi Vivien!

Ai, great sketches. Especially the car, I find their "lines" so difficult to find and put on paper.

Joan, you did artful stuff and that is good.

I sketched at the PT Place outside again. Cloudy but not cold, about 72 or so. In the small travel sketchbook with a Sharpie fine line.
Number 1 awning - the flat awnings on the buildings.. My sketch got a bit out of whack and the building turned toward the right.... Interesting to try, better next time. I think I had done the same before.

Jo, glad to see you have good views for sketching while Gene is at PT. Nice buildings. I'd be checking out what was inside.

Ai, your food illustrations are getting so good you could be illustrating a cookbook. One item looks more yummy than the next. The cafe has some interesting decor to sketch too.

1 - landscape - watercolors

Jo: Nice lines of awning in your area. I love your strokes of forrground trees on right, such minimum but effective. Excellent in creating the leading in pathway.

Joan: Thank you so much. Wonderful plein air. Love the texture of your foreground vegetation. Nice depth as well.

Ai - I agree with Joan, "Your food items so good and could be illustrating a cookbook!" I also like your car sketch too!
Jo - If you hadnt told us I wouldnt have known the building turned to the right? It looks great to me!
Joan - Love your landscape, great definition with the paler trees in the background!

Ai, thanks so much. I had to check the new mobile studio for paint splatters. lol

Vivien, thanks!!

The NYC Urban Sketchers met at Industry City in Brooklyn. It is an area of industrial buildings offering "hip eateries, shops, art galleries and outdoor events."
2 - vehicle - watercolors and ink

4 - interior view - watercolors and ink

Thanks Ai. Fun you got to meet up for a cafe visit. Love the pink Valentine's drink and moose. Yummy looking. The other treats as well. I see chocolate!! you did well in the scene with the lamps and gouache. I smile to see Tone by the concrete wall.

Joan, thanks. I am trying to remember what is in the first space and can't. There is a Subway and the AT&T office down in that area. Ha. I love your winter landscape. The dry grasses and bare trees are great with a cool/cold sky. The Reggae vehicle made me smile. Love the rich colors. The interior is sooooo good. Fantastic distance. The open windows scene is super, looks finished to me.

Vivien, I guess I was thinking to post a photo and had to explain the difference. Heh, heh. Thanks.

Lazy day, quiet. Jennie and Brandon came by for a little bit. Nap and leftovers. That is our old retired life. Hey, not complaining. Super Bowl tomorrow. No interest here so just any other day.

Jo, very nice sketch outside. 👍

Joan, lovely sketches from your Usk meeting! Nice landscape! Good drawing of the car 🚗.

Ai, your interiors are lovely. Cakes top 🍰.

I went to the Usk Helsinki meeting yesterday. Here's my poor drawing. I was sketching inside a building called Finlandia Hall, tho we could only stay in the first floor bc there was a private event in the 2nd. Outside it was awful cold so had to be inside. I'm trying to learn to draw/paint inside & street views this spring bc in the summer I have signed up to a pleinair event in Europe, the largest pleinair event in Europe actually and there we will paint also in the city. I really need practice 😊.

Jo, thanks. I would have finished the third sketch but my friend who had surgery on her shoulder stopped by to see everyone and see our show-and-tell. I ended up talking instead of sketching and then the show-and-tell started. I took a photo so I will probably finish it today...maybe when I'm not watching the Super Bowl. lol

Grapes, thanks so much. You did a nice job on the potted plants and the walls. Where will the plein air event be held? I've done a few local ones but never a really big one. The building we were sketching in yesterday is an industrial building and it was so cold inside that most of the sketchers kept their coats on. Here is the group that was left at the end of the day.

Oh! Joan you have about twice as much sketchers in your Usk group than we do👍 Thanks for the photo, it's nice to see you all.
The pleinair event is happening in July in Wexford, Ireland. Here's their page: https://www.artintheopen.org/. Check the Venues they are my favorite places, no "ugly" locations this year 👍 can't wait. Also the workshop tab is interesting to check.
