Scavenger Hunt #161: May 26 – June 7

Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Hi Ai & Fletch!

I haven't attended a Memorial Day Parade and service in a few years. I checked out the time for the one in my town. The parade was starting at 11:00 and ending at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial (which I had never noticed). I went to the Memorial and sketched the setup before the parade got there.

1 - view of what was in front of me - watercolors

I had just finished the first sketch when the parade started coming into view. I got a little of everything...the people next to me, the local police carrying the flag, and a bagpiper.

2 - people - watercolors and ink

Joan: Excellent people parading details, esp. two persons holding the flags and the boy and girls. The views of the memorial with wreaths are also very nice. Super start of this Hunt.

I took a few hours detour to a cafe not far from campus, to change my setting in hope for clearing out craziness in my mind.

#1 Building -- an old building on Charoenkrun road ... done by pencil+wc+ink
#2 Gold or golden -- an entrance to alley leading to a Thai temple ... I used my limited palette... so the golden might not be as bright as I wish.

#3 Countour (blind) of a big decoration cage, about my height, and base around 2.5 feet x2.5 feet, sitting on one corner of a cafe ... done with a ball-point pen

#4 In front of me -- view on my table, with my big teapot and a flourless choccolate cake ... done with pencil + wc + ink
#5 metal -- tea strainer next to the teapot.

Ai, thanks so much. Sketching moving people is always a challenge. Your buildings are always so fun and interesting. I like your contour drawings. Yum on the dim sum! Great job on the coffee setup on the table too...nice lines and shading.

Fletch, thanks. It was a nice, patriotic feeling to the morning.

Ai - It looks like craziness in mind makes you productive! Like the contour drawings and the colors of the temple entry seem richer in the second photo showing the entry as welll as the picture. I am truly jealous of the amazing cafes you have to visit. Everything here is new, mass produced an they all have identical looks. Nice work on your tea service.

Today is Sharon‘s PT day so crossing fingers to get something drawn.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Fletch, I hope Sharon's PT went well and that you found time to sketch.

My plein air group met yesterday at Stony Brook Harbor. We've painted there many times so I usually look around for a slightly different view for the day. I worked on this (and talked a bit) for about an hour and a half. It isn't finished because I didn't get to do the green reflections on the water yet, especially on the left side. The other sketchers were going to lunch so I stopped painting and joined them. I'll finish it from my photos.

3 - nature - watercolors

Joan - thanks for a fun list - lovely, lovely watercolor sketches- Great job on employing the space for the landscape foreground....delicious!!

Ai - the buildings are full of personality and rich historic atmosphere....adore the contours...very adventurous birdcage blindy!!

Hi Fletch and Sharon, Jo C, Ned, and the lurkers.....Hope we can catch a sketch or two today...

Joan: Thanks. Bravo to your nature landscape. All variety of greens create great depth with a glorious touch of the duck birds... Perfect !!!

Joan, painting looks great but really want to see it again after you add the reflections please.

Robin, Ai and lurkers 👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽

#1 Animsl - model horse. Reference is a model Appaloosa stallion. Multiple grades of graphite in a 9x12 in pad of multimedia paper.

Joan, thanks for the list. I absolutely adore the Memorial Day sketches. Your nature sketch is so good with all sorts of natural itmes. Love the ducks.

Ai, great way to clear your mind and beautiful sketches as a result The Old building and Golden temple entrance is so lovely. You picked a difficult subject for the blind contour cage -- well done. Your tea sketch almost makes me want to drink tea instead of coffee. Love the setup. The dim sum sounds good to me.

Fletch wow! Great sketch of the Appaloosa. Always fascinating to see. Applause.

Sketched on my iPad at my footstool. I was putting the final touches on the peppers and poof it was gone, I must have hit layers and delete as I was trying to get back. So my second effort may not be as good as do overs are not my thing. I'm so tired of it. Drat. I used the app Brushes, had never even tried to use the layers, guess an update put it in a different spot.
Number 1 salt and Number 2 vegetable, jalapeños.

Robin, thanks for being such a great cheerleader for all of us!

Ai, thanks. If I had talked less I probably would have finished the painting. lol But it was great to be with the other artists who I didn't see much of through the winter.

I sketched a local marina where the local boaters stop to fill up on gas and other essentials.
3 - buildings - watercolors and ink
4 - heavy gas pumps
5 - water

I took a short solo train trip to down south sea-side town of Bangkok called Hua Hin. I should be here for a few days. Tone helped with the kids logistics to school or Univ.

#6 has a string ... Thai fishing boats at Hua Hin beach... Ig only have strenth to draw for only one boat today esp. the hide-tide was coming in quick... lol...watercolor+ pencil on expired wc paper... can you see the dead gray spot on the dead paper. It appeared clearly after I applied my watercolor. I had too much wc papers in storage of too many years.... Don't be like me...ha ha.

Jo: Thanks.... Such a fun and happy colorful digi. Love them, esp. the shades of purple.

Robin: thanks for kind words
