I found a nook of students activity event at Univ., which has seats and some cps and crayons for my quick stop...

#1 (loosely) ...relating to tea or coffee ...vase decorations on a coffee or tea table, the real vase is much taller...I had shorten it here to fit my sketchbook ...ha ha

Robin, thanks so much for the new list.

Ai, you are quick to get a sketch done even though you were returning to work. Your quick sketch captured the flowers in the vase perfectly! How handy that they had a spot all set up for you.

#1 wine glass- wanted to play with white on gray but could not find the gray pad so used Procreate and had fun playing with brushes and layers and lots of undos.

P.S. see now the disproportionate J. Sharon caught it. LOL

1 - “fast” - dragonfly at the pond

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)

— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

— freehand

I was back at the pond, trying to find Donald, but all the ducks were hiding. I was there for quite awhile and didn’t see any of them.

However, there was a dragonfly zooming around. Very busy this dragonfly, and had fantastic colors.

I watched for quite awhile, but couldn’t figure out very much, so the sketch is sparse lol
😆 At least s/he was willing to skim the water in front of me (and slightly below me) from time to time, giving me a way to sketch him or her.

But I didn’t really know where to put the wings 🤣 I could see them even though they were transparent and moving at “light speed,” but I couldn’t figure out how all the parts went together…..

I want to paint the dragonfly because of the amazing colors and shape and wings, but that will have to wait for later…..

TL;DR (too long, don’t read)

This dragonfly was veeeeery fast, and never seemed to set down anywhere. But this one would stop in the nearby deep shade, facing me, and hover in the air, and stare at me. But when s/he did that, I couldn’t see enough to sketch those moments. Plus I was mesmerized 😂 Couldn’t look away 🤪

There were also a bunch of baby dragonflies. I never saw anything like them. One of these little tykes dragged a feather in the shallow edge of the pond. S/he dragged the feather about a foot (12”) (about 30cm). I was stunned. This little guy was so narrow, I don’t see how it was possible for it to be dragging a feather through even just an inch or so of water. (The end of the feather was sticking up out of the water.)

Back later to comment…..

Pine Cone, bravo for trying to sketch the dragonfly. They move so quickly it is nearly impossible to actually zone in on the body parts. And then the wings are so transparent that you aren't sure what you're looking at. Maybe people that actually paint and sketch them study models or photos and practice them first, long before they try to sketch them in real life. You got a basic shape though. (y)

Pine Cone, you made me smile. It was fun to sit with you by the pond and study the dragonflies. Thank you! Great sketch too!

THESE COMMENTS ARE FOR THE PREVIOUS EVENT SH#167, HOSTED BY JOAN (and cross-posted here)…..

Joan
and Fletch and Jade/Bob and JoC and Ai and Robin — Thanks for your kind words and encouragement 😂 Your thoughts mean a lot to me, and keep me going 😂

Ai — Glad you’re home safe. Be sure to make time for rest 😌

Fletch — You did it!!! 😂 Your sketch is perfect, with the lovely shapes, and details and shading that strike just the right note. I’m so glad you added these to this event. Inspiring work ✍️

Joan — Beautiful, relaxing sketches to finish this event. Wonderful and inspiring 🎨 Thanks for hosting the fun and creativity of this event 🙏

Robin — What an ordeal, but wow, you made very good use of it. Look at all you showed us!!! From the interiors with people and furniture….. to the exteriors with planes and trucks, and people working hard…… the portrait of a person’s face in the curve of the chair expresses so much with your well chosen lines ☀️

JoC — Your chairs have personality!!! I love them all, and I’m glad they’re each unique, just like the people who sit in them 😍 I admire the way you defined and shaded them as well.

— Fun list, lots of possibility. Thanks for hosting!!!

Ai — Wonderful find and sketch, with beautiful colors, and happy result ☀️

Joan — Thanks for your kind and encouraging words — I’m going to take your advice, and try and find images to help me practice dragonflies. Unbelievable how fast they move. How do they do it ?!?!? When I went to the pond yesterday, I had no idea I’d end up trying to sketch a dragonfly. But there it was, and it flew in front of me so often, skimming the edge near me, that I felt like I had to at least try 😂

Fletch — Superb drawing of the glass, zowie!!! Perfectly shaped, and brought to life with lovely shading and reflections….. it’s so good to see your sketches, and I study them endlessly 🙏😂☀️

New to this but not to drawing, lol. I need to brush on my life drawing skills as I'm going on a holiday soon and like to sketch on these occasions.

Black fountain pen on strathmore toned grey paper.

The teapots lid is not right but no matter.
