Ned, that street did turn but probably didn't go far. Most of the streets just go straight down to the bay and have some kind of metal barrier to stop the fools who would keep on driving. lol I know out in California many of the beaches are down below cliffs...something we rarely see here on Long Island. Sorry your calligraphy ink and the paper didn't play nicely together. Nice sketch of the bottle.

Vivien, thanks so much.

Jo, so the ink colors were neon, not pastel? Come to think of it I don't think I've seen pastel colors in that brand. Nice bottle shapes and shading on them. Good job on your hand.

Ai, nice bakery treat. I should have thought of that today while I was at Chelsea Market with the sketchers. There were a lot of places that had treats...but I didn't indulge. I should have sketched my delicious tacos, but of course I forgot. lol I like your flowers in the basket.

The NYC Urban Sketchers went to Chelsea Market today. It is a 2-floor collection of restaurants, food stalls, and shops. It was decorated with a lot of Chinese lanterns and a few dragons.

On the way to the city I sketched on the Long Island Railroad.

Ai, the treat looks lovely. Fun to explore and have a good day. the flowers are so fun, I like the basket.

Ah, should have known Joan would be out and about, too. You did fantastic sketches. On the railroad sketches are good. Love the wallamnd people in the Oreo one. The dragon scene is sooo good. I didn't see the chopsticks the first time.

You two artists do the most fun and adventurous things. I'm smiling and looking again.

Jo -- the acrylic inks are great. I don't know anything about acrylic ink except it's what my friend is trying to use with gelli printing using a laser-printed image of branches.... I'd be curious to know if it stays shiny. Nice sketch of your hand!

Ai -- great direct WC. I like the sense of light in the treat!

Joan -- Like that you got your legs and sketchbook and it feels like we're on the train with you! I think my daughter takes the Long Island Railroad when she goes back to school to get from Jamaica Station to Penn Station where she goes across to the Moynihan train hall to get the Amtrack up the Hudson... nice bakery scene and I always notice how you get nice deep colors, the reds and golds in the last one are great.

#2 animal -- rockfish a friend gave me ( carved out of a coconut! ) ink and tried to use inktense for colors. Learned something, probably can do a little better next time.

it has more yellow and orange on the bottom than this photo shows:

Joan: Awesome sketches.... Yes, the legs in the railroad are so cool and the Chinese new year decoration, esp. the challenging dragon is super. Your atmospheric sketch of people eating with chopsticks are wonderful.

Jo: Thanks.

Ned: Thanks. The fish folk art looks very interesting. Your sketch is very nice, your proportion is spotted on. Now, your fish art inspires me to look out for any coconut around where we live. We also live in the orchard zone of Bangkok.

Jo, thanks. I'm glad I went into the city. I got so used to going with my friend, but she had shoulder replacement surgery and is out of commission for a while. It is different to go in by myself.

Ned, what a great fish! I love the colors and the whimsy of it. How fun that it is made out of a coconut. I'm sure your daughter travels a similar route from Jamaica thru Penn Station. It is an easy trip. For me it is a long one because I live so far out on the island...but it gives me sketching time going in. :)

Ai, thanks. At one point there must have been 20 sketchers at the same time all sitting along the edge of the area outside the store and all looking up and sketching that dragon.

We are back to cold weather today...19 degrees when I got up.

Ned, fantastic fish. How fun to be made from a coconut. You captured it very well. You get out and about a lot, too. The acrylic ink stays shiny where it is thicker, otherwise just looks like ink or watercolor. So maybe a second coat would make it shine.

Ai, hi there. Thanks.

Joan, you are cold again and we are having an Indian Summer or something. It is 82º today. I braved it to go on the porch. Ha.

Number 3, nature - the ponds are more dirt than water at the moment. The fishermen were still out there this morning but I can't imagine there are many fish left in such a small amount of water with all the hunting birds. Fishing is catch and release. This is half a page in the large Canson sketchbook, The markers bled through on the top part. I used the Acurit 3 which is about dry and watercolor.

Jo -- I like those colors... it even seems warm! :) And the bird is a nice touch. We've had heavy rain the past couple days... 1st day of baseball season at Sonoma State was supposed to be Saturday but it was rained out. They are supposed to play tomorrow and Tuesday, but I think it's going to be raining. They are a division II team but I like to go over and watch. The president of the university just announced budget cuts and that there will be no more NCAA sports starting next year, so it's going to be a sad and difficult year for those kids. The main team I follow ( Cal Berkeley ) doesn't start for a couple more weeks.....

Made a start on this but it got late so maybe I will color it tomorrow :) Or maybe I'll sketch something else!

#3 new -- rod and reel ( reel is new too! )

Jo, I like your colors in the landscape! Nice feel to it!!

Ned, your line sketch of the rod and reel is great! The lines are so well done. Wishing you many days of good times with it.

Ned, I agree great sketch. Son David just retired, he should make himself a fishing pole! In Kentucky. I'm having a hard time getting excited about baseball. Texas went to the SEC so we lost our home town feel I think. TV is different, players change with the open trades. They play in Dallas in a tournament to open Feb 14. New coach, Schlosnagel ?? from Aggies and before that TCU so lots of stress about leaving the other teams and taking coaches. Only the 5th coach for Texas. We won't go to night games and think watching on TV will be pricey this year. Sigh... But Hook 'em Horns!

Thanks, Joan. I'm smiling sat on the porch again today, but didn't sketch.

Hasta mañana!

I took some time off today to go sketching in the city in Charoenkrung area...

#8 place ...an old shop house ...direct watercolor
#9 animal ...an elk sculpture (back view) in a cafe
#10 people from one table ..but they left before I can complete my sketch
#11 legs.. of the chairs in the cafe

Oooh -- Ai, there's something special about that first one. Like the chairs the ink one is well done that's a hard angle! The bold silhouette is cool. And I don't care at all that those people left because it looks neat just the way it is!

Jo -- thanks! Building the rod was very fun and satisfying... I'm already plotting what kind to build next. I bought a rod building book probably 35 years ago, but never had time until now. You think SEC is bad? Cal joined the ACC so instead of Oregon and UCLA and Washington, we're playing Syracuse and Florida State and Notre Dame. It's completely crazy, and I'm definitely not paying for "ACC network". I always thought when I retired I might go to some away games, but not if I have to fly all the way across the country :(

Joan -- thanks!

Fletch, Robin, Vivien, everyone.... hi!

Ai -- remember the pinhole camera that made pictures of the sun for 6 months? I said I'd draw it. I like to use this kind of can because the metal is thin and the top comes off easily with a can opener. After removing the top ( and drinking the juice!!! ), I spray paint it black then poke a pinhole with a needle. Then I put in a piece of photographic paper, tape it shut, and put it out to collect the sun....

#4 container ( a can that I will make a "solargraphy" camera from ) Ink + WC

Jo: Thanks... Lovely pond and trees... you got nice soothing colors ... .Hope the rain comes to refill your pond soon. In our country cabin, a nearby reservoir often gets really dry too one long season a year.

Ned: Thanks.... wonderful sketch of your brand new handmade fishing rod... impressive and the sketch is so accurate. Great job with the can for the pin-hole camera too. You are really one-of-a-kind engineer.

Joan & all the lurkers: Hello.

Jo, just the thought of you sitting on the porch made me smile. It was 43 degrees when I woke up this morning, so instead of doing one of my walking videos I actually went for a morning walk outside. This is the first time it has been warm enough for a walk in the morning in weeks!

Ai, I like the direct watercolor of the people at the table! You don't need more details than that. Nice work on the old shop house, but that shrine is really lovely with so many great details.

Ned, thanks for explaining what you are going to do to the can to turn it into a camera like you've done before. Cool! You are getting very creative in your retirement.

I guess I forgot to post these the other day.
9 - treat (Napoleon pastry which looked better than it tasted) - watercolors and ink

IMG_7115.jpeg

10 - container - watercolors and ink
11 - big sign
12 - old items

IMG_7117.jpeg

Joan: Thanks... bravo on the vintage shop with lots of stuffs. You did the great details. The treat in the plate is awesome... very yummy looking.

Am further behind than I thought so will post this now than come back and comment.

#2 book
#3 leg
Stack of books on coffee table lower shelf. Did rough sketch in pencil used it as guide and drew in ink. Need lots of hatching in ink practice. Again simple technique that is different in ink versus graphite.

Ai - Your blueberries look ready to eat. Love the treat and the dry flowers. Fun to see all the cafes around you and the yummy treats. Time off went to good use. Nice set of sketches. Love all the colors in the Yanawa temple.

Ned - Nice ink sketch. The carved fish made me smile. Your friend created a fun piece and you captured it well in 2D. WOW on the reel sketch! Sketch of your future camera is really well done,

Jo - Did not know you worked with dip pens. Nice sketch of ink collection. The hand looks like it came from a Loomis sketch book for hands. Pond is looking low but beautifully rendered.

Joan - The train sketch looks like you had fun. Oreo Building sketch is great. You go terrific brickwork. Your colors on dragon are almost glowing. We just finished dinner and getting ready for dessert. Have a sudden craving for a Napoleon.😎. Guessing the Antique shop is somewhere on the South Shore. Has that relaxed “let it be” look I associate with that area.

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Thanks, all.

Ai, glorious sketches on your city trip. The house is neat, the animal is a good find. The people have such good gesture, they don't need more. Your legs have nice curves. Ha. HYour culture Yanawa Temple is lovely and intricate.

Ned, we suffer together about baseball. I will have to pay more to watch the Horns now, too. I may just listen, so far free. Hope you find a neat rod to build. You did so well. Ahhhh, love the Guava Juice can, Will make a tall or wide photo, eh?

Joan, great to get out in the fresh air. We had about 85º again. Your Napoleon looks so good, disappointing it wasn't as good as it looks. Nice ellipses. The antique store is super. Love the colors and detail.

Fletch, I started to sketch the same items. I would have had to move the books so lazy me did something else. You are doing well with your hatching. The wood grain looks great, shadows good. Applause. Thanks on my hand, it is always handy. (ha.) I like all pens but again lazy for cleaning and dealing with drips with "real" pens so usually stick with Microns, Zigs, etc.
Number 4, car 5, entrance, 6 yellow, a balloon in the PT place All with micron 3 in the small sketchbook

Fletch & Jo: Thanks so much. And it is so great that you made the Hunt fit with your busy schedule.

Fletch: Nice table leg... I can feel the solidity of it... Great of those book list too.

Jo: Ross is our favorite place to shop, if we make it back to visit our US. folk. Good sketch of car and also the parking lot view. Nice balloon in the clinic office... I would feel more relaxed if I see it in any office.
