Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Hi Friends - I just left some comments on the last hunt.....got so into the week that I thought the hunt was still on and was so enthused by all your works and comments....so drop back and see how much pleasure you brought of my little world. 😊

Thanks for the list Ned. I been looking for an excuse to by a rubber duck. At work we sell them alot and there are some pretty interesting versions. Folks driving Jeep cover their dashboards with them and exchange them. Don't know if this is local or nationwide fetish? but they are only 50cent.....

Robin, I've never seen a jeep with a dashboard covered with rubber ducks. I'll have to keep an eye out for them. I know there are a lot of stores that are filled with rubber ducks with all kinds of accessories. I have one that is an artist that I bought in Amsterdam. I've seen the stores in NYC and Venice too.

Ai, nice line sketches of the plants. Love the position of the dog...just hanging out. lol Thanks for your comments. I have another smaller rubber duck. Maybe I'll sketch him too.

Ai, your rubber duck looks like she's related to my duck. Nice!!

My sketch group had a Thanksgiving theme tonight. I went for a more autumnal still life.
5 - pumpkin (and other squash) - watercolors

Joan, the digi boat is amazing. Fun find for the fence behind it. I like the rubber duck with the blue hat. Makes me smile. Pretty leaf. Your group of squash is lovely. Applause.

Ai, Tone’s working hard! I like your lines on the sketches of the leaves and the bananas. I was so surprised years ago to find that bananas grow up not hanging down. Ha. Love the lines on the doggie. The yellow duck is so cute and well done. I like the shadow.

I sketched on the footstool while listening to the book with Gene after our exercise today. In the large Canson mix media with a Sharpie and watercolor.
Number 1 rubber duck - sub yellow wind up chicken, Number 2 shoe - Gene’s, Number 3 timepiece - Gene’s AppleWatch, Number 4 Nose or Eye, Gene's

Jo, thanks for your comments. It still seems like digital sketching takes a lot longer than regular sketching. I don't know if I'll ever get faster. lol Does your yellow chicken wind? Mine has a pull ring that makes it move. Nice view of Gene's shoes.

We finally got some rain, but they said it will barely make a dent in our drought. It has been raining all day though. We met friends for lunch so we were out most of the day. Luckily I have a stash of things in a box in the closet. This pine cone has made repeated appearances.

6 - pine cone - assorted Tombow markers and watercolors

Jo: Thanks.... Wow the soft yellow chick is so cute in the sketch and in real life. Nice sketches of body parts and the time piece.

Joan: Thank you. Well done leaves + pumpkin collection and the pine-cone is very well soft rendered.

Joan, thanks. I like the pinecone. I’ve had a couple on my desk and don’t see them now. Ha. The chicken does wind up, probably still related to yours!

Ai, thank you. Gene is always a patient model. Moved his feet and moved them back for me.

This is what dropped from the sky yesterday! Morning painting from this morn. through the kitchen window so it's a painting from life. Oil painting on a pizza box, acrylic paint functioning as gesso. About 25x25 cm.

#1 Edge or Corner of something - corner of the garden.
#2 gate - red gate to the garden
#3 table - the garden table is safe as I rescued it already earlier in the fall but forgot the seat as it was moved near the red gate - so painted the non-rescued seat instead.

I almost painted a #living creature - a black bird sat on a branch in my view but it flew away and in the end l forgot to add it.
