What art supplies have you bought recently?

Good to know it's not just me! Mines for fun too and I'm going to get some basic stuff for sketching. Do you stick to certain methods to keep the cost down too?
Sorry for the delay! But no, I've never even thought of using different methods to keep the costs down. 🤔 Something to think about.

I bought some garlic doughballs from the supermarket last week. They came in this handy tray:

I'm getting back into art and am surprised how much some supplies cost! 😅 The posts about thrift store finds is encouraging tho. I'm going to stick to sketching and maybe watercolour to start with. Has anyone else had this issue?

Picked up some supplies yesterday. Michaels has some good deals going on, so decided to see what I could come out with.

They had 'Buy 1 get 2 Free' on canvases. So I left with three of their thicker ones. I went a smaller size than I usually would (I usually paint 16x20" or larger) because I thought they'd be a little more manageable for me. I'm thinking of finally breaking my art hiatus, and I often have issues actually finishing my work. So I figured smaller canvases are worth trying out.

I also left with 72 tubes of Liquitex acrylic paints. They're the Basics line, which I haven't used before. But I decided I'm going to try them out to keep costs down. When I do actually paint, my acrylics were always Golden Heavy Body/Open or Liquitex Heavy Body. But those are getting quite expensive anymore. Part of my art hiatus was due to the guilt I was feeling about the costs of my supplies due to our current financial situation.
I'm usually very finicky about my supplies. However, I've considered the fact that I don't sell my work, stopped taking commissions ages ago, and I haven't done galleries in quite some time now either. At this point, it'd be purely hobby. So I'm hoping the Basics will be sufficient enough for what I need, to help keep some costs down. I went the 72 set because after slapping a coupon on it, I walked off having spent $90. Which felt decent for what I got. Because I haven't used them before, I bought two individual tubes of Dioxazine purple and Hooker's green (which were also Buy 1 Get 1) to use as testers. In hindsight, should have gotten black and white. But I went that purple and green cause they've always been two of my favorites. Going to play with those first. If I like them, then I'll crack open that big set. If I don't, I left it sealed so it's returnable. I bought them simultaneously to take advantage of all the sales and coupons before they end. 😆

That's a good deal for that haul, TK H-H .. well done! 🛍️🎨🖌️✏️ I like what you said about doing this for you and trying smaller canvases. All the best with your new venture! ✊ I'm rooting for you (with no pressure) ☺️

.. welcome to my world .. it's much more fun. My biggest expense now is the paper pads but the convenience makes it worthwhile.

At my favorite thrift store the other day, there were eight canvas panels and four stretched canvases. They were old Craftint, Fredrix and Grumbacher Plyex. They were in perfect, original wrapping condition. I did not buy them as I have a lifetime supply already. But I figured there may be more supplies of different sorts. This store for some reason sometimes gets a fair amount of decent (and sometimes downright spectacular..) art supplies. First I found a whole tub of bagged up Sharpie colored markers, eighteen bags of 12 markers each. I left those also and kept on high alert for more stuff... I found two Global 120 pencil cases and one is tan leather. They are filled every slot with Luminance, Prismacolor and Derwent Drawing. I paid $7ea for them. I got an ArtBin brush box with four very nice hog brushes for $4.

Blimey! That's amazing ... Well done.

I figure I still have my stash of quality supplies when I want to make something more serious. But for practice and just-for-funs, I'm hoping the cheaper paints will be sufficient. From what I've read, they're fairly good for the price.

The larger tubes I bought were $5 each regular price (though one was free...). That's much more doable than my usual brands. Some of Golden's paints are getting up to $30-40 per tube depending where you buy them. 😕

Thank you! The pencils in the cases were actually priced at $10ea (which is a bargain in itself). However one day a week, the whole store is 30% off. So, even better.. same with the brushbox..

A pad of A4 watercolor paper and some Kolinsky brushes. I'm now looking forward to them being delivered. I already have too many brushes, and expect these to be the last in a long, long time.

Hardware stores are as dangerous as art stores. A couple of weeks ago I went into my local one just for some wood glue: I came with out with the glue, some bits of timber, a new bolt for the back gate and an angle grinder that was on offer.

I adore using dip pens but I had to stop because I became too good at knocking the ink bottle over. I ruined a pair of jeans, got the floor and table more than once (luckily it wiped clean) and I had to re-paint part of my living room wall! Now I just don't trust myself.
I could use an angle grinder too! For wood glue have you tried the new Titebond Quick&Thick? well, I guess it's not "new", been out for several years now - but it's thick and easy to control and dries fast - in a few minutes.
