What art supplies have you bought recently?

I really wanted together some Tuscan Red pencils but Dick Blick was sold out. I picked up a slew of pencils that were close in color to Tuscan Red as well as some Sennelier pastels. The reds especially are incredibly saturated… like Cadmium Red in oil paints… and oh so soft. I just completed a small area on my current painting and got red all over my painting pants (to say nothing of my hands). Arty, do you use soft pastels? Being a compulsively clean artist I can imagine you’d hate them. 😂

I'm doing quite a few soft pastel works right now. Just had to refresh stocks of conte crayons and a few whites and yellows, can't think of brand now but they are working out well.

I use primarily 3 brands of soft pastel: Rembrandt are semi-soft and I use them for something like 75% of the painting.I have the largest collection of these. Sennelier are very soft and have the richest or most saturated pigments. These I frequently use for the final layers. Then I use Prismacolors’ NuPastels. These are compressed sticks… about 1/4 the width of normal pastels. They are also very hard. I use these for fine details. Recently, I have begun using pastel pencils… which are also great for details.

Great info. Thanks. Sadly, I couldn't get Rembrants. Mine are an OK substitute Torson D'or. I usually have to order online, but I was being impatient. I do use pastel pencils for details.

Today from a thrift store I frequent:

A nice big zippered pencil case w 264 colored pencils stuffed inside.. some sharpened but all full length...
186 Caran d'Ache Luminance and 79 Berol Prismacolor. It had no price sticker so I gave it to a clerk and she brought it back to me priced at $4.. I bought a few more items and got an extra 20% off w my coupon...

I recently bought a set of Derwent Graphic Soft graphite pencils. I have been working primarily with coloured pencils for so long that I have forgotten how fun it is to make monochromatic drawings.

I bought a subscription box called SketchBox. Every month, they send different art supplies and a project. Some of the things I got I never heard of, like charcoal watercolours. It is also fun to get random art supplies.

Getting "stuff" is always fun! 😁
The "charcoal watercolours" sounded interesting, so I googled it. Not sure if I'd want to get a 37 ml tube, however, which is what the review said it came in.
Thanks,

They're fun to use!
I've used the Derwent charcoal watercolor pans, and a tube of Kohle liquid charcoal. I have a Nitram pan as well but haven't tried it yet.

I quite like the Derwent pans though. They have a variety of subtle colors, and they're surprisingly smooth for being charcoal.

I was traveling to a neighboring town and visited their small thrift store, which I only rarely go to. Maybe 2-3 times per year. They had a decent pile of mats and mat boards someone donated. Image sizes were ACEO size up to 11x14 size. There were about 25 and were priced at $.25ea., regardless of the size. Most still wrappec

Try this. It is like one big watercolour pan. It paints wonderfully. very black.

I have used the tubes, too. I have one pan in my normal watercolour for it. still learning how it flows.
but I also got 3 tubes of colour charcoal watercolour. I have not opened it yet. very excitng.

I have some graphite and charcoal watercolor pencils. That's another presentation that is lots of fun: you use them like typical watercolor pencils: i.e. you can draw like with pencils/charcoal, and wash them with brush and water. Mine are (if I remember well, they are woodless) Koh-i-noor, but there are Derwent too at least.
