My contribution to the September 2024 Abstract Challenge was the Voronoi diagram-based magenta and phthalo green exercise in complementaries:

Angles and Curves - Magenta and Phthalo Green Stage 5.jpg

It is hanging in the home of a special person, who has now commissioned me to paint a series of three variations on the Voronoi theme, using other complementaries in the colour wheel. I have decided on the following colour schemes:

Red - Cyan
Orange - Blue-cyan
Yellow - Blue

Like the original magenta - green painting, each new painting will be 400 x 400mm. These are the designs I have decided on, each with my proposed colour scheme.

I think they should form an interesting family of paintings when arranged as a group.

As usual, I will give updates on the progress, but since I am slow, it is going to take some time. Another factor is that I am working on The Dancer sculpture at the same time, but more details on that will follow in another thread. In the meantime, here is a preview of the dancer.

Oh, this is so exciting! What a wonderful project. Those paintings are going to complement each each other so beautifully and I just know they’re going to be gorgeous. Can’t wait to see them done. I am so glad that beautiful challenge piece, which is a very strong standalone piece, has lead to even more! Whoohoo!!🎉
That Dancer is a lovely piece. I look forward to hearing more about it. I’m staying tuned.🙂

A very interesting project, I look forward to seeing how this develops. Love the colours in your panting, very striking :)

Thank you Christine. Your words of encouragement are appreciated.

Thank you!

I can’t wait to see the finished paintings, Hermes, and know you will work your magic with those color combinations. The dancer … wow! I see the organic shapes of molecules which every dancer is made of, with such a sense grace and balance.

Thank you Donna! I will tell more about the sculpture in a few days.

Here is the first painting in the group of variations that explore complementary colours on a backbone of Voronoi diagrams. This is the Yellow - Blue variation. I have also played with textures to add interest in the large areas. There are traces of another complementary pair, red and green, in some areas.

Winsor & Newton Griffin alkyd oils on a hardboard panel, 400 x 400mm.

It’s nice to see this design again, Hermes. I love the texture on the yellow-gold shapes and their sculptural appearance. The red adds energy to the background. Well done!

Oh yeah, that works! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️ It practically glows. Love seeing this variation. And those shapes… their is something very comforting about this design. You’ve added more texture to this one as well, it works very well in this piece, gives it it’s own personality. Glad you’re sticking with it. It’s gonna be beautiful seeing all these variations.
