Wow, I've been writing my "Bart on Art" column in our regional newspaper, the San Mateo Daily Journal, for half a year now!
This was totally unexpected, but it seems to be working well. For the paper it's increasing circulation and attention, since it covers a sphere of activity that had little local coverage before. For the artists and galleries featured, who are finding it increases visibility, attention and even sales. And for me, as I now have a regular outlet for my writing in my retirement (my four books don't provide that regular activity.)
My intention was to draw attention to art in our area, to artists who don't usually get visibility for their work, and to give the public both a viewing activity and pointers to participatory opportunities. It's doing all of those well.
Now who will write this for me when/if I get a solo show? Well, need to get that show first. You know how that goes....
