Personality type and your art?

Ha ha ha. I don't know if I analyze everything, but I definitely obsess over much. To answer your question, Jade, when I got diagnosed, I suppose I didn't exactly feel better, but it made a lot of sense to me afterward. I kinda always knew I was on the spectrum, but didn't know how much. I was synaesthetic when I was a kid, and some say that is also somewhere on the spectrum. But then I've also heard that it's not. Who knows?

I'm good at math and logical thinking. But I'm bad at planning and organising stuff. And I don't like socialising in large groups.

I like expressive paintings. Brushwork made from the shoulder rather than the wrist. And I almost always like the sketches made by artists more than their more laborious finished paintings.

I also prefer to work loose. And I almost never have more than a very vague idea of what I want to paint before I start. I paint in watercolour and enjoy the "unpredictability" of the medium. I enjoy using large brush and pretty much never do small details. I think I enjoy the exploratory part of painting the most.
And as soon as I think I know how the work will turn out I lose interest and want to move on to something else.

The thing is that I have no problems staying focused. I can spend hours solving a math problem or reading a book from start to finish in one go. But doing everyday things like paying bills, booking flights, taking out the trash; those things can be a hard. I like cooking, but not if I have to follow a recipe.

I'm sure there is some letter abbreviation for my personality/condition :)

Ha! Really interesting Rikard. I love that you love (!) unpredictability in your art. That's very cool. I remember you saying that about some mountain picture you did a while ago. Have you taken a free mbti test online? I had imagined id like to work loose and discovered I quite like detail (with some whimsy!).

Thanks Jade :) I never did a test. But I might do one. Could be interesting. My wife is an extrovert and is really good at doing the daily stuff. I'm lucky to have her.
You know I have tried to do detail quite a bit. My art path started pretty much with ink drawings. And I really wanted to learn to do beautiful cross contour hatching in ink. Like Michelangelo and the other masters. But I just couldn't motivate myself to do it. I can do a decent drawing in charcoal or red chalk. It's quicker and smudges a bit :)

I've done a few free ones and I'm always an introvert (INFP). I'm like you with day to day stuff. I sometimes wonder how I have survived! 😄I am a bit head in the clouds 🌫️ luckily for me my husband's good with that stuff. He's an introvert too. It's good when you find the right groove for you with art, isn't it?

A little update on this. I went to an Art Open House event near where I live, last weekend. It was at a studio with a few different artists. Really interesting and lovely paintings, pottery, crochet etc and I bought a lovely vase. However I think some of the artists were just slightly over enthusiastic maybe because I shared what I do with art too and it ended up feeling like they were interviewing me to join them! They were great but it made me realise how much art allows me to be my naturally introverted self and I love doing it alone and at home. I think a shared studio set up could be lovely if you were more extroverted or wanting more connections though.

I am not quite sure what my personality type is, I haven't taken any sort of test - however, I am quite introverted and tend to avoid social interaction whenever possible. I think this shows in my art, at least currently, with my preferred subjects being plants and animals as my life is primarily focused on being surrounded by other people. I don't have a lot of time to physically enjoy the experience of nature, so drawing things that I wish I could spend more time experiencing is a good compromise, I think.

Also, it helps that I am very detail oriented, and plants and animals have so much detail to them when we look closer. We are so used to looking at other people all day, especially if we work closely with them, that we don't take time to consider the other things surrounding us that hold so many small pieces of beauty that capture our interest.

Perhaps in a way it's an outward expression of my desire to replace my very urbanised, corporate existence with one that is more slow paced and naturalistic like how we used to live in the past (My love for archaeology and anthropology slipping through there!)

I love this answer, apodemouse. I am very similar to you though I'm not detail oriented in real life but am more so at least with drawing it seems.. animals are my favourite topic. I'm also living in a rural place now but used to be urbanized. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
