Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.

  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Joan, your fall pumpkins are super.

Hi Pine Cone...

Ai, look how fun your concert is. Applause.

I sketched at PT yesterday and on the porch this morning.
#1 use this to make marks - pens with Sharpie in travel Canson small sketchbook

Pine Cone, thanks so much.

Ai, good job on the concert hall before things got too crowded. Hope it was a good show.

Jo, thanks. I love the farm stands at this time of year. Fun sketches of the markers and the fruit pie. Yum!

Last night our theme was autumn. I already had the pinecones but picked up the little gourds at the market yesterday just to sketch them. They were smaller than the pinecone in front. lol
2 - simple form (delicate squash) - watercolor and watercolor pencils
3 - complex form (pinecones)

Ai -- I like the chairs and their nice smooth lines. Jo is right, table legs like that are hard, and you did them well. Wow, Sting? I know he's older than me.. maybe 75 years old?! I was in college when the Police were popular. Hope it was fun! Great perspective on your sketch.

Joan -- the Andrews Family Farm is awesome! And the squash/pumpkin/gourd/pine cone is just great, I love the color and depth. I laughed when I saw you drew your right hand. I tried to do that holding a fly swatter and it drove me crazy having to pick it up and put it down over and over again. I like the shading on those.

Jo -- I always look at how you and Joan use nice darks to give depth. When I first started it looked stark and bad when I tried, slowly I'm learning it works when there are enough mid-tones too. The pen holder is great. Haha I didn't even know there still were Hostess fruit pies. I loved those when I was a kid. I might think they are too sweet now. I've made 5 ( five! ) apple pies since I got to Washington... from a Gravenstein apple tree in the yard. I keep reducing the sugar and yesterday's pie seems right ... only about 1/3 C brown sugar in the whole pie.

Robin and everyone, hi!

Back in a while with today's sketch.

Well first apologies for disappearing in the last Hunt, just got overwhelmed by life. Going to make a real effort to make time to enjoy art.
Ai - Thanks for bonus items 😎 Nice line work on the University lounge chairs. Sting concert sketch is super.

Joan - Your market sketch reminds me of one of Jo’s pastels..brilliant color, excellent play of light and shadow.have you gotten some new pigments? Your colors are so vivid. Excellent work on pinecone and squashes. The ink wash shading on pen, tablet and sofa add great dimension.

Jo - Love the darks on sketch of pens. Props for taking on a text challenge! Well done.

Pine Cone, Ned, Robin and lurking friends 👋🏽👋🏽

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch
