Scavenger Hunt from Life #171: Sep 23 - Oct 05

Ned, thanks so much. You made me laugh about the hat, too. The game was good to get out and see the players in real life.... Look at your still life. Love the great shapes and the colors. Nice glass look on the bottle and love the bowl. I think I had some of those way back when. Fun finds!!

Joan, thanks and have a fun and safe trip. We will be with you in spirit....

Pine Cone, love the sunflowers, they are so happy, eh? Lovely to see. The color swatch and numbers are a great idea. Look forward to the painting!

Ai, love our quick line sketches. They have such great gesture and tell the stories well. Fun family find.

It was my respite day out. A lovely lady from home care came and stayed with Gene for a few hours to give me some R & R. I got a latte and went toward the park for shade it was already 90+ at noonish. I saw the tractor/back hoe being parked and there was great shade so took advantage. The guys evidently went to lunch. I was concentrating on the tractor and didn't think to include the stop sign. I like it in the photo. Sigh... Half page in the Canson Mixed Media large sketchbook with Ohuhu pens and watercolors.
Then I went to Guadalajara for a snack and drew my guacamole and margarita. Some kind folks bought my lunch. They said they felt sorry for me sitting alone. Ha... Same tools and same book. Whole page for this one.
Number 6 Wheels and Number 7 sub for part of your breakfast.

Pine Cone -- neat different kinds of sunflowers! I used to plant lots of different kinds but I'm not home in the summer these days.

Ai -- Neat boats, The perspective on the family eating is great.

Jo -- We were typing at the same time. That backhoe/tractor is bigger than I thought at first, I wouldn't enjoy pulling that trailer or parking it. Good sketch. I like the guacamole and chips and drink, good depth and nice smooth shapes. It's starting to get chilly and rainy up here near Seattle ( I'm leaving next week )

#7 makes noise: safety boat whistle
#8 string lanyard for the whistle

I was sketching at a small cafe, on the pier...the Grand Palace is on the other side of the river, not far from this area ...

#9 useful...Prannok Pier and all kind of boats ... along ChaoPhraya River, Bangkok...done in wc and pencil

PineCone: Thanks. Wow... great sunflowers... It is great that you can find some in the wild.

Ned: Thanks. What a fantastic still-life sketch. You have done great, esp. the bowl with lemon. In all, they give me a very cozy vintage happy vibe. Nicely done whistle with strings...with cool shadow too. Love them all.

Fletch: Thanks for your kind; hope you get some time to sketch.

Jo: Thanks. Wowza on the lunch treat... very colorful and yummy... Hope one day I get to cheers with you, with the same salty drink you were having... lol... I saw you use the same wc palette that I like too on your lunch table. Wonderful record of the back-hoe tractor. I am glad you had a great resting day.

Joe1, Jade : Thanks.

Joan: Have a safe and fantastic trip... Ciao !!!

Ned, I like the whistle and lanyard with shadows even!! Nice work. I noticed its pretty chilly up north. Hope we get a little of that soon.

Ai, love the river scene. You capture your world so well. I follow Ashok, a blogger/photographer/artist/architect in India. He has been in Thailand taking photos of food and other things if you go back on his blog! I recognize some from your sketches. Ha.

Thank you so much Joan, Ai, Jade, Ned, JoC, and Fletch for your help and encouragement 😍😌

Ai — Amazing vintage glass sketches 😍 with beauty and joy in the colors and shapes and shadows….. You’ve painted the delicate edges so well, I can hardly believe they won’t break when you close your sketchbook 🤣
Your story and article and images of the Giant Swing are truly scary…. I would never, ever do that even though I loved playground swings. To me, your sketch is wonderful and peaceful. Perhaps discontinuing its use in real life contributes to the positive feeling of stillness and peace of the area???
Beautiful trees and bark near your work place ☀️ and oh my, the boats are racing, wow 😂 Love the family fun scene too 💕 as well as your amazing view of the pier and river area ☀️

Joan — Wonderful scenes from your sketching with your NY Sketchers 👍
Love your heat-soaked sketch of your breakfast eggs. Eggs are still a fav, and fantastic protein energy too 😍😂
I’ve been wishing I could get markers like you guys have been talking about, but not really tortured about it, because in my homeless state, I haven’t been in a real art store for ages. Half the battle is avoiding temptation 😅 But then, Monday, I was wandering around in one of the WalMarts, and lo and behold, they have the Posca markers you guys have been talking about. In fact, they have sets of regular colors AND sets of soft colors. I couldn’t believe it. They even have good quality paper. It’s hidden in a separate area with the *auto* stuff, don’t ask me why lol.
Amazing continuous line still life…..I keep coming back to study it and get all nostalgic 😌
Have fun on your trip !!!

JoC — Sounds like you had a good time at the game 😊
Love your sketches so much !!! I’m smiling with Ned about the hat, and admire your terrific perspective of the equipment and man, as well as the shaping of your drink cup and straw….. but the tree is my fav - exceptional. Beautifully expressed with its full beauty and peaceful, welcoming shape 🌳
You draw things with ease that would ***overwhelm*** me - like the tractor/back hoe…. amazing detailed sketch…. and ditto for your yummy lunch. Love that nice people noticed you were alone and paid ❤️‍🩹

Jade — Cool cat!!! 😻 I’m not sure it’s Bob, but I’m imagining Bob sitting in a comfy armchair at Barnes and Noble, reading “Stuart Little” 😇 and sipping a Strawberry Frapp (that was me, back in the day 🛋️ )

Ned — Another moment of nostalgia, seeing your beautiful still life, in its gentle brightness….. Your sketches need frames. They are so very special with their innate sense of life, and colors to warm the day of anyone who sees them 🎨 I’ve been back to study this and others you’ve done, and am grateful 🙏 For me, the simplicity is already there, and the colors are already part of that simplicity 😌
Thanks for the sunflower story 🌻😂 It never registered with me in the past that there were so many different kinds until I decided to scribble some lol 😳😍 Beautiful whistle and well-done with the lanyard 👍

Fletch👋 Hi, and best to you and Sharon. Take good care
🙏😌☀️

a definite “Notes-to-Self Sketch”

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)
— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

Color Swatches added as a border

…… Apple pencil

tl;dr (too long, don’t read)

There are sunflowers all over around here, so with winter coming, and even though another storm was threatening, I pulled my mobile studio over near a group of sunflowers growing wild. There were quite a few different colors and types!!! I was eager to beat the rain, so this is just a quick scribble of five different types. I didn’t even do any leaves 🤣

On a different day, I made the color swatches shown in the second version, added as a border. I think it would be fun to try a sunflower painting someday 🙏 and these “Notes” might help with that 🎨

Jo, glad you got a day off and were able to go to lunch and be treated too! Cute tractor and great food sketch.

Pine Cone, thanks so much. I'm very lazy about drawing and painting, I just quit when I get tired of it, like not putting in the background or other shapes. Rarely do I go back and finish or do over to practice or get it right. I admire Joan and the time she puts in her drawings and paintings with all the detail. I could never do that. You have been doing so well with your drawing.

Ai, beautiful line drawings of the people. Love the gestures, they look like they are concentrating and working hard.

Joan, oh thank you. Your sketch in the airplane is so good. Love all the people. Have a great time!!

Ai -- thanks! The river view is fun, and your colors make it seem bright and pleasant! I like the student concentrating at his desk... very intent on his work!

Joan -- that really captures the feel of being on a trans-Atlantic flight. Haha just looking at it makes me think it's going to be a while before landing. Hope you have good weather there.

Pine Cone, thank you. I like the way drawing takes my mind away from everything... it seems like the rest of the day feels somehow better if I've spent a little while sketching. If the sketch comes out good, that's kind of an additional nice plus but not the main thing. I'm like that about a lot of things. I love vegetable gardening because I enjoy watching the plants grow. If there's something good to eat at the end, it's a nice plus, but not the main reason I like it. I love fishing, and catching a fish is a nice plus but not the main thing ( it's that you MIGHT catch a fish! )

Jo -- we were typing at the same time again! Thanks and hi!

Ned, thank you. Ohhh, the chair reminds me of my folks' porch. Great job on the coloring, lines and perspective. Yowza!

Joan, you made it and already sketching. Love the canal scene. Super! Probably fits many things. Thanks....

I sketched on the porch, of course. Number 8, nature - the hummers again. In the large Canson Mix Media book with Micron 03 and watercolor We've enjoyed watching about 15 at a time, guess it is migration.

Ned: Thanks. Awesome rocking chair. The colors and its form gave me cozy happy vibe.

Jade, PineCone: Hello.

Jo: Thanks. So wonderful of those birds around red feeder. Well done of their movement, and the shine sparkle on the feeder. Beautiful and wonderful moment well captured.

Joan: Thanks. Ciao... the Venice boat sure can fit vehicle, and the building, is also on the list. Awesome. The plane sketch is also great with people too.

Jo, thanks. I love the sketch of the hummingbirds at the feeder. You really captured their movements! They are so much fun to watch.

Ai, thanks so much. It is nice to be here with different models.
