Scavenger Hunt from Life #171: Sep 23 - Oct 05

I had some difficulty with that hammer so I decided to try another tool.

This wrench says "Stillson" and "Boston USA" on it. I looked it up, and Daniel Stillson invented the adjustable pipe wrench. His patent is from the 1870's. This one was made before 1906, so it was probably my great grandfather's.

#1 vintage wrench ( ink, ink wash, WC, Strathmore Visual Journal ~5x8" )

Joan, the squash and pinecones are perfect! Clever for simple and complex. Love the sketch. I like your hand with makes marks, I thought of that after I had finished. I like drawing hands. Your reminders on the pad are well done. Comfy couch.

Ned, Gene is the one that has the sweet tooth. He has always liked the pies, especially when traveling. Apples right off the tree are so good. Bet the pies were delicious. Sounds like the right amount of sweetness for me. Double wow on the wrench and your history of it. Well done!! (Texas has a fall ball game on Saturday against Texas Tech at the Dell Diamond where the Round Rock Express play. We may go for a while, it will be 12 innings instead of a double header but don't know if Gene can hold out that long. We will see.)

Fletch, great to see you. So hard to find art time lately. Hope you can do that.... Thanks on my lettering. I'm not patient enough to do a good job and tend to just do my printing so if you had the real box it might not look the same, ha.

Hi to all the rest of you sketchers.....

Thanks all for kind comments: Jo, Joan, Fletch, and Ned.

Ned
: Yes, Sting Concert in Bangkok was superb. We got great seats despite not paying too high price. The show was a sold-out, 70% of audiences were foreigners or expats and in 50s-70s age. Sting showed up exactly at 8 pm. He played a bass guitar and sang his heart out straight for almost 16 songs with minimum talking. He was in absolutely great shape, voice-wise, and for his age. The sound system and lighting were also spectacular. Tone and I enjoyed it very much. Sting told us, his last concert in Bangkok was 23 years ago. He ended the night with Roxanne... with a full house roaring.

Ned, thanks. I can draw my right hand while it is drawing after a lot of practice. lol It makes it easier to do it when actually sketching it because you don't have to keep putting it down...just hold it. If I am going to sketch something else that I'm holding I will hold it in my left hand (even tho that doesn't feel as natural). Your comment to Jo about the pie reminds me of my mother's apple pie. She was diabetic so she always made a sugarless apple pie. I don't know what kind of apples she used, but it was always sweet enough without adding any additional sugar.

Fletch, sorry that life took you off elsewhere instead of having time to sketch. That happens! Thanks for your comments on my Andrews Farm painting. I still am using the same pigments, but I did a lot of layers to get the depth of color on the veggies and flowers. My plein air group is having our annual art show shortly after I get back from Venice, and the woman who owns the farm always comes and buys the paintings I do of her farm. I wanted it to be ready to pop in a frame when I get home.

Ai, what a fun looking space duck with the lettering!

Jade, love the colorful bird sketch. I can almost hear him chirping over here.

Ned - Great job on the stills on wrench. You brought back some memories. Helping as a kid with plumbing would asked to pass the stillson. Memory is they were really heavy. As I got older it was more commonly called a pipe wrench and have not heard it called a stillson in decades!

Ai - glad you enjoyed the concert and were able to sketch it. Cool pho too with screens an$ light show. Love the space duck.

Jade - super job on the bird and wood. Great textures!

Keep sketching and listening
Fletch

Ai — Cool composition, and terrific depth all the way through, including the back, WOW !!! 🎸 Sure wish I could’ve been there….. Sting is a fav 😌
And cool space doll 😍 my kind of doll lol 🚀🧑‍🚀

JoC — Fun sketches of your markers and treat….. interesting to be able to compare the markers - good job showing just enough of the forms through the mesh - you sure have a deft touch 🖊️
Hope you and Gene have a fun and relaxing time, and be sure not to over-do 😌

Joan — Gorgeous autumn still life - love your contrasts and saturated colors 🎨
Even though it’s grayscale, your next artsy group of three seems part of the still life with its depth and wonderful washes 🖋️
The Andrews owner is so fortunate to have your paintings to look forward to each year 💝

Fletch — So good to see you here - hang in there, and be sure to get your rest 💤
Your observant comments always help me learn and understand so much more….. for example, you and Joan, discussing her vivid colors in her Andrews painting, and also how they compare with JoC’s work in a different medium 💡

Ned — Fantastic work on the Stillson, and sent me on a fun journey to learn more….. Terrific weight, and 3D, and shading, and vintage feel throughout - superb and entertaining - things I never thought I’d be saying about a pipe wrench 😂🎨 You’re doing your ancestors proud 😍

Jade — Gorgeous bird, well drawn and beautiful, beautiful, beauriful 😂🧡❤️

Ai - Sweet doll!
Joan - looking forward to your sketches of Venice!
Jade - lovely bird
Ned, Jo. Fletch, Pine Cone, hi all.
This year is hurtling through - we move to Daylight Savings here in NZ tomorrow. Our Spring has been weird with rain, hail, sun and snow! Typical Spring weather.

Vivien — I’m glad you got these posted….. taken together, they gave me a nostalgic feeling, a sense of a life being lived well. Lovely, all three ☀️

1 - “complex form” - unusual cloud

— non-virtual sketch
— sketched from inside my mobile studio

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)
— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

— freehand

— My Re-Learning to Draw Program - Phase 2 (single objects or small scenes)

tl;dr (too long, don’t read)

The cloudy sky was almost entirely covered with uniform dark gray, all around, when I saw a small brighter area with several small, distinct clouds in the distance. One of them was very flat on the bottom edge, like it had been cut with scissors. And on the right, there was another sharp edge, this one running at a diagonal angle to the bottom edge. So I decided to try and portray this unusual cloud with its ultra-distinct features.

By the time I finished, the gigantic dark mass to the left of this cloud (NOT shown) had engulfed most of the little one I was sketching ☁️

Pine Cone, as always thanks for your comments. I love how the conversations here lead to exploring how people work with different mediums. Great job showing the darkness of the clouds and the shapes. Unfortunately the clouds sometimes move really quickly and "engulfs" what we're sketching. You captured it nicely.

Vivien, thanks so much. I know you are heading toward warmer weather. We are changing the clocks sooner here this year than in the past. I think itt will happen while we are gone, so I'm going to have to check the time so I'm not off when I get back. Glad your bottle, key, and book fit so well.

Ai, beautiful vintage glass pieces! Love the colors and the highlights. Glass isn't easy to paint. You nailed it!

Joan: Thanks.
Viv: Great bottle plus other item. Glad you can share the sketches.
PineCone: Wonderful complex shape cloud. Nicely done in pencil.

Vivien - nice sketches! 👌
Ai - I love the blue glass 💙
PineCone - your clouds are really nice.. I do like your delicate, intricate style of drawing. ✊

I thought I'd posted a comment on other drawings yesterday but obviously not 🤦‍♀️ I did want to say Ned, you really suit watercolours.. I love the ones you've posted here.
