Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Our theme for sketching was "trinkets" so I looked for small things to sketch that have no great value, other than being things I like.

2 - makes me smile (mermaid ornament I have hanging on the door of my guest bathroom) -watercolors and Pitt artist pens with a brush tip
3 - animal (rubber duck)
4 - made of clay (magnet from Santa Fe)

Joan: Lovely sketches to start this Hunt. Wow, you nicely caught the gentleman on his a bit stress situation at the cafe. Cute mermaid, Sante Fe memoir, and a yellow duck to cheer us all together.

Joan love the expression on the mans face and body, oh a rubber duck bomber….cute sketch

Ai ..love that fast cycle! Your marks make it

Ai -- thanks for the list!

Joan -- I like the expression on the fellow with the laptop! Nice colors in the assortment.

Ai -- nice motorbike!

Robin -- I like all the colors of ink :)

I did this for the last hunt but got really busy and didn't post it. So it can be #1 has wheels....
Waiting for the smog check on my car, this 1970's truck was parked outside:

Ai, thanks. For a rainy day I ended up getting a few things sketched. Good job on the motorcycle. It looks like it could zoom off the page. :)

Robin, thanks. Wowza on the patterns on the items in your sketch. The blue and the gold with your hatching give it so much energy! Is the fish part of Tom's wine holder? Cool!!

Ned, thank you. We were in Starbucks for about 2 hours and I think the man had almost the same expression on his face and his hand up to his head most of the time. lol I wonder what he was looking at. Nice work on the truck parked outside. Just enough detail!

When our showers ended today I rode down near one of the marinas. I liked this view with the red truck and the boat inside the building.

5 - has wheels - watercolors and ink
6 - building
7 - plants

Joan, I grinned from ear to ear to see your Starbucks sketch! I love the trinkets. Cool mermaid with the duck and the Santa Fe magnet is perfect. Is the lady bug a magnet, too? I like the sketch with the car and boat inside, too. You are going to finish the Hunt and have to do doubles. :-)

Ai, you capture scooters and bikes so well. Your hatching is great, reminds me of Robin's on the has wheels.

Robin, you made me laugh, too. Not sending is indeed me. I love your memories in your sketch with the Daily Red (fun name) and the wine holder. Hugs.

Ned, cool 70s truck. Well done. Hope your smog check went well. They are still doing that in the big cities in Texas but we in the small towns don't have smog checks with no smog!!

They kept Gene an extra day. He had very high blood pressure on Monday afternoon so I took him to the ER here in Bastrop at docs suggestion. They sent him to the stroke hospital just in case to have an MRI. Long story but no MRI until Tuesday after 5. In the meantime they sedated him and he was so groggy on Tuesday that they could not do the tests to release him after they decided he didn't have a stroke. They marked he failed instead of he was drugged out so he couldn't leave until all that stuff wore off and he could to the swallow test and could walk. So we finally got home Wednesday about 6 p.m. We spent the day getting new prescriptions and seeing our doctor here again. I left his wheelchair at the ER here and they couldn't find it so Joanna had to go get that when they finally did. Lots of running around and worry for not much. Sigh... Tonight he is finally sort of himself as the knock out pill is wearing off completely. Whew! Hope I never have to have drugs like that. MRI was clear. So, almost normal around here, so I spent the evening watching baseball. Hope to sketch tomorrow. See you soon.

Jo -- that sounds awful and stressful. Whew is right! I hope everything settles and you can have some peaceful time for a while!! ( yep, the jeep passed, but it's been a lot of work getting it ready to be tested... in CA they won't pass if any idiot lights are on and there were 2 things I had to deal with... didn't matter than they weren't related to emissions... )

Robin: Thanks. Love your happy set. The fish pattern on the wine holder seems to hold magic. Love the blue+ yellow that make them all sing !!!

Joan: Thanks. Wonderful building with vehicles parked and a boat parked inside. Good shading to show the inside of the building.

Ned: Thanks. I love your sketch that show the "macho" power of the truck.

Jo: Thanks. Sorry for all the medical chaos that left you two and everyone who heard of it scare. It is not easy to go through that but I hope you got the best help and best rest afterward. Take it easy.

All: Pls. jump in with your sketches.

Jo, thanks. The ladybug is actually a pin that I've had since I was a little girl. Hopefully I can finish the hunt for a change. It has been a long time. Sorry there was such a lot going on with Gene, but luckily the tests didn't show anything. Hopefully the meds will keep his pressure in a normal range. Things like that are so upsetting to go through. Glad Joanna was around for help and support. Relax now and breathe!

Ned, glad you passed the smog test. We don't do those out here.

Ai, glad I found an interesting building that I hadn't sketched before. I tend to go back and sketch familiar spots too often. lol

Thanks everyone. I probably shouldn't have put so much, I'm too much of a talker!! Thanks for putting up with me. All good here, off to PT today.

Jo, sometimes sharing something makes it easier to make something less upsetting. Glad we can help.

I took a ride out east today. I wanted to get some hanging plants for my patio. In addition I stopped to get some lunch at the Southold Fish Market. When I sat down I realized my little sketchpad wasn't in my purse and neither were the pens I usually sketch with. I wanted to sketch my lunch and only had an ink brush. I used the back of my receipt for paper to sketch my fried sea scallops and salad. It was delicious!
8 - good eat - ink pen plus watercolor added when I got back into my car.

IMG_7664.jpeg

9 - has legs (chairs) - watercolors and ink
10 - flowers

Joan, very resourceful. Love your lunch would like to share!! The flower shop is so good with the dark inside the shop, reflections, etc.
No sketching. PT and just getting caught up. Maybe tomorrow, right?

Jo: Yes ...we are glad to give you additional recovery vibe.

Joan: great job..sketching the lunch on a receipt. The piece with chairs in front is gorgeous.

We stopped at a nice cafe on our way home from the cabin. They decorate the cafe with famous Ratchaburi ceramic works..... I used the back page of wc sketchbook that I had teared off some pages (I let go of some of my sketches in the front page)...a part of my art room decluttering. I often carry a few of this type of paper on my clipboard, in case I want to sketch out light...Oops I got my doggie body and tail off...

#4 animal...a doggie ceramic sculpture
#5 made from clay...two vases

This was supposed to be posted yesterday, but apparently I forgot to hit the "post reply."

Ai, thanks so much. That should teach me to check my bag before I go out. lol I thought I at least had a piece of paper. lol Your tropical sketches quiet my soul. I love the flowers, but the view of your country cabin property is really nice. I think we all need to join you there. Update: I love the dog sculpture with the holes in his body. The blue and white pottery is pretty. Nice!!

Today was supposed to be a bit rainy, so I was surprised when it stayed pretty clear all day with a bit of sunshine now and then. I headed up to Setauket to check out a craft fair (which was not any good at all) but ended up near the Long Island Sound on the north shore. I found a spot to park and was able to sit outside and paint. An egret stopped by and posed by the grasses.
