A short discussion of American Tonalism came up in this thread today (check out the thread for some of Donna's gorgeous work), and it reminded me of a long-ago attempt of mine, using oil pastels.

An oldie of mine! This is my copy/rendition of Newport, by Tonalism artist Blondelle Malone, 1907:

Pretty sure it's on Arches oil paper, maybe 9x12"? All I really recall is loving Tonalism and having a lot of fun with that purple sky. :LOL:

A fun old exercise. I always enjoyed the tactile, direct feel of using oil pastels, but haven't used them seriously in some time now.

I was not familiar with that artist so thank you for pointing her out, Terri. She painted lots of gardens and her work is beautiful. Your version is too! It's nice to see one of your older pieces and why not a purple sky? How did you get the sky so smooth - a solvent of some kind? Such gorgeous colors and so many spots of flowers, just like Ms. Malone's work. I hope this is in a frame and on the wall in your house.

Donna, Wayne - thank you both! :)

@Donna T - yes, isn't she great? ❤️ I love her compositions.

I used Turpenoid to smooth out an underpainting of Mungyo Gallery purples, and Neopastels were on subsequent layers. All the whites are Sennelier - best white out there.

You did a beautiful job, Terri. I love the soft tones and colors. The sky is brilliant. ❤️

Sno, Arty, Steph - thanks to you all for the kind words! When I was learning how to handle oil pastels, I found it more relaxing to practice by painting copies of masters. :)

Fun to dig up old work! Love the color combos. I haven't worked in oil pastels in a very long- how fun!
