I thought this was a really interesting article,it seems to upend everything that I've read before.

And here I always thought it was well known that Gauguin routinely took the side of the natives against the colonial authorities, and ended up in legal trouble over it. All the blather about the underage girls and cultural appropriation etc. has always just been an example of what Nassim Taleb calls "anachronistic bigoteering", i.e. judging people of the past by our own modern standards. It's a silly game.

But glad to see a new book cast even more light on these issues.

What a fascinating - and eye-opening - article. Gaugin was actually pretty much the opposite of how he's been perceived for so long and I'm happy to see the truth coming out. Thanks for posting the article!

Don't feel guilty; it was a widespread disease at the time and he had similar symptoms. That was all that was reported.
