Max Beckmann

Beckmann, Paul Klee, and Pierre Bonnard were my favorite Modernist (20th Century) painters for years. I used to take this book out of the school library repeatedly and lug it around with me continually while I was in art school:

There were only a couple of paintings in the video that I hadn't seen before. I was lucky enough to see most of Beckmann's work in person at three different exhibitions: one exhibition of his triptychs at the National Gallery, Washington, a second exhibition focused on the comparison of Beckmann's work with that of the artist of Paris who were his influences and peers (Matisse, Picasso, Braque, etc...), and the third was a great encyclopedic retrospective of his entire oeuvre held at MoMA New York.

Thank you so much for this video. It was a timely reminder of an artist I've admired since my teens, but for some reason I haven't looked at his work for many years.
