Chipmunk Watercolor

The size made it too difficult to scan so I took a photo, the actual watercolor has much more vibrant color and contrast. Anyway I'm debating whether to add some foliage behind the tree stump, (the side where the chipmunk's tail is). It is painted in a Mont Marte watercolour book, size A4

This is beautiful. I would be tempted to leave it the way it is but I have a problem with backgrounds so I tend to be a little afraid of them. I'll be interested to see what others say.

Wonderful. A wash of color would work instead of foliage.

Thank you both, yes a wash of color is what I had in mind but I'm kind of afraid I might make it worse so I'm hesitating

You could take a photo, cut it out, and place in on different washes till you get it right. Then wash the original.

That is an idea, but instead I could just put the photo of the watercolor in a graphics program and play around with the background. Thanks for the suggestion

This is so nice, Liz! You got a beautiful look of fur which is amazing. If you can figure out how to add in a background, or even a partial background, without disturbing the chipmunk it might enhance him but it really looks great as is. I think I've seen videos where the artist paints up close to the subject with water first and then when the wash is added it doesn't go beyond that border.

This is really good. I love the fur. Personally I'd leave the background as it is and keep all the focus on the animal.
