I’m guessing this reference has been used before! Sorry about that - I suppose it’s the small pool of creative commons files that are available.

Anyway, I love your koala. Fantastic work!

Jane - no need to be sorry - I'm glad that I have something to post - and
hopefully I'll finally finish it !
Cheers,
Patricia

Patricia - Lovely work on the Koala, I think i painted this one at the same time as you did. How are you?

Here's my turtle.

Ink and Inktense wash in XL Mixed Media sketchbook, about 8"x8".

Thanks for wonderful images this week.

Anne - He is beautiful! Im having a try at the same reference in acrylic....and what a mess Im making! I went the other way, putting the white shell stripes on top of the shell, with acrylic paint... believe me it doesnt work very well at all! So yours is probably the only turtle painting we will see this month! Well done with it!

Anne, what a lovely version. You are doing so well with the Inktense. Are you using the pencils, blocks, or pans? I have a set of 12 pencils and was thinking of getting a pan set. (Yeah, like I need more supplies.)

Vivien, your work is always enjoyable, so I hope we get to see it. I am pondering doing the turtle also, but it will be a while. I just did a fish for the Watermedia Challenge and it was much more difficult and frustrating that I thought it would be.

Here's my try in "Interactive Acrylics". I havent used them for years but thought I'd try them once more. Apologies for my drawing, as well as the acrylics, I have no computer or printer so I'm drawing the image from my phone which isn't the easiest. And of course I see all the acrylic painting mistakes Ive made too!

Vivien, I like it! The shell and underside are excellent. What are "interactive acrylics"?

Joy - Thank you but it was a struggle!
"Atelier Interactive Acrylics", were developed some years ago. They are different from usual Acrylics, in that they, can be re-wetted when dry - of course ordinary Acrylics cant.
Supposed to be easier to lay wet Acrylics on top of the original paint to blend etc. They sound great and took off like a storm when newly marketed. BUT theres a lot of various problems when using them, so they arent so popular now. And believe me, I have encountered every problem possible with them! Mostly the dry paint re-wetting when new layers are applied! But stupidly, I originally bought just about every color they made....so....I get them out from time to time to try once again!....me being thifty! Theres a lot on Utube about using them, if you are interested.

Thanks Vivien. I've looked at the the Atelier and even sent for their free sample but I never really got into them. I don't normally paint in acrylics or oil so it would have been a major change for me. Your turtle is better than you think. It's much better to put the white lines in later if you can.

Joy, thanks for your comments. I use the 12 pencil set with a Caran D'Ache Watercolor Palette so I am using the pencils like regular watercolors. I also have a 12 color pan set but find that I don't use them. I find it much easier to mix colors using the pencils and the palette. I made a chart of each of the colors combined with each other so my 12 pencil set becomes a 72 color set with subtle variations of each color. Using the pencils this way, they will last for a very long time. The way I use them, I only remove the wood around the lead, I don't actually sharpen them. I use the largest hole of a Carpenter long point sharpener.

I use the palette upside down and usually lay it flat on the table. The pencils do stain the palette, but it doesn't seem to affect using it. The scribbled colors rinse off easily with a sponge and water.

JaneS also did the turtle in digital and it came out beautifully. I almost looks like it was painted on velvet.

Vivien, thanks for the explanation, as I have never heard of these. I have never tried acrylics, thus I know very little about them. Attempting to conquer watercolor is a lifetime endeavor (for me), and I have a fair amount of supplies. It is admirable that you are skilled in many mediums.

Anne, thanks for the great explanation and visuals. I don't make a color charts (yours looks great), as there is so much variation in mixing colors by percentage of each. When I made them for watercolors in the past, I didn't refer to them anyway. We have the same set of 12. Really the very large sets are not necessary to get a range, even though the manufactures keep coming up with bigger sets. Apparently most of the public has FSS - "Full Set Syndrome"! I use a sharpener in "moderation" when I want a sharp point, as I am a slow painter and do not go through a lot of supplies. I got the pencil set on sale for about $1.50 USD per pencil, so I think trying to preserve every bit of core would be just another thing about which to pressure myself. I have the same palette, recommended on YT. Got that on sale for about $7 USD. Any unused pigment can be left and reactivated.

Joy, your Roo is amazing. I love the colours you’ve incorporated into him.
Jane, love your digi butterfly on the dark background.
Pat, such a great koala. He’s beautifully done as is.
Anne, you really work well with your intense pencils and am very impressed with your colour chart. Your turtle turned out great.
Vivian, you may have struggled with your turtle but I certainly wouldn’t have known had you not mentioned it. Nice colour choices.

Well, Anne has inspired me to take out my intense pencils. I didn’t use them the way she does but I really had fun with them. I used them dry then added water then added more pencil marks into the wet. Done in my watercolour sketchbook 7x10”.

Lovely, Sandra. My limited experience with the Inktense mainly was drawing and then wetting.

Great Sanlynn. Aren't they fun? I love how versatile they are for many different styles. Glad you gave them a try!

Sanlynn - Lovely Koala drawing. And yes I use Inktense Pencils also, and have for years. Theyve rescued many a failed Watercolor for me. I use them dry then add water too make a wash with them. They are so versitile, and Im glad others are using them.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I don’t use the intense much. With the koala I just experimented. I have a small set.

Anne, I love your turtle. A light, fresh approach.

Vivien, yours is great too. I like the bold colours, especially that gorgeous blue!

Sanlynn, what a fantastic koala. I love his nose!
