A couple moths

I'm working on a series of taiga butterflies and moths, and these are two moths I've recently finished. All of the butterflies and moths in this series will have a similar sort of composition, with their being centered and posed with wings spread, but each will be distinct with a different fabric pattern background (along with heir own unique wing patterning and body shape). I kinda want to think of each butterfly or moth as being one square or rectangle of a giant quilt and maybe one day being able to display them as a grid on the wall.

"The Shy Light" (8 x 8 inches)

Media used: pastel pencils, graphite, black pen on fabric, seed beads, vintage button

"The Sun Hour" (8 x 8 inches)

Media used: pastel pencils, graphite, and black pen on fabric, fuzzy fabric trim, sequins, seed beads, sun pendant

I might go back into "The Sun Hour" later and make a couple minor changes, but all in all I'm thinking both of these are done!

Excuse my unknowing but do you render the moths or are they pinned to your abstract rendered backgrounds?

Not a problem! I render the moths on a separate piece of cotton fabric (a solid color rather than a pattern), which I cut out and adhere onto a patterned fabric. "The Shy Light" moth I drew with pastel pencils, graphite, and black pen on a subtle shimmery white cotton fabric, and "The Sun Hour" moth I drew with pastel pencils, graphite, and black pen on a starry black cotton fabric. Though the body of "The Sun Hour" moth is simply a thick fuzzy black fabric trim I found at a fabric warehouse, which I glued on top of the drawn body.

Agh, I just realized I posted an old version of "The Shy Light." I don't know why I keep doing this when I post work on CreativeSpark. 😭 This is the second time now, I need to organize my files better. Below is the most recent version of "The Shy Light" taken today. (The last one was taken yesterday and is missing some details and minor changes, plus the moon button was off center.)

… wow, that is done so well. Like a well tied fishing insect. 👍

I had to look up that phrase to know what it meant! Thanks so much. :) I do a lot of measuring with a ruler and right angle triangle to get the two wings looking as symmetrical as I can. Using a black pen is great too for getting the edges to look more crisp, as fabric frays a little when cut out.

These are great! I read about them on your blog. They are well rendered, and your fabric decisions are awesome! I want to see them all in that grid. ♥️

Loving seeing all your moth pieces!

Makes me feel like I should continue my own moth series I was working on. Haven't touched those in a while...
