Hello! Over the last month, I've been working on a gift for my partner's niece. She's a 6 year old redhead who will be turning 7 years old in late May. I was thinking of this as a surprise birthday present for her. I hope that she likes it... if not now, then when she's older at least. I'm also going to do a quick portrait of her in pastels on fabric. (She specifically requested that I do a portrait of her, lol.) I haven't started that but anticipate it'll only take 1 or 2 sittings to complete - won't be a long one!

I'm not really sure how I feel about this one. I have some mixed feelings, but it was still very enjoyable to make.

Media used: pastel pencils, graphite, black ink pen, rhinestones, and fabric appliques on fabrics. Plus, colored pencils and black ink pen on paper (for the girl's face, hair, and hand).

Your work always leaves me speechless, Steph; it's so creative and original! Your niece will treasure this - and I'll bet she imagines herself as that brave redhead making her way through a potentially dangerous place. I can't even imagine how you would start something like this. A sketch maybe? It's incredible!

Thank you so much, I seriously appreciate it. 🥰

Your work is very original. Your niece will love it for the rest of her life. I hope your mixed feelings come up to being happy with this one. You should be proud! (But I know the feeling, if that helps.) I usually have to not look at it for a few days before I start to come around.

Chef’s kiss Steph! F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S!
Love it. I think she will appreciate this even more as she gets older.

Thank you 🥰 And ha it is like that for me, too. Rarely do I like a piece immediately after a make it. And sometimes it can take weeks to warm up to it like you said. I suppose that's the consequence after looking at a piece so closely and intensely for a long period of time.

Beautiful and creative. So much to look at and enjoy. I love it! Your niece will be thrilled.

Oh, I think most of us can relate to this! It might be better if I worked faster, but I don't. By the time I'm done, I'm usually sick of looking at my stuff, and mildly irked that it consumed so much of my time. 😆

lol I know I always go through these stages while making a work of art: "wow, I am having SO much fun! --> "wow, this is taking a long time, I wonder if I'm going to get done..." --> "I think this is looking pretty good, I'm almost done!" --> some sort of anxiety and panic gradually grows over me as I get closer to completion --> extreme relief immediately after completing the piece --> disappointment and maybe even sorrow for a few days while looking at the result --> 2 weeks pass, "wow, ok, this actually looks fine."

I think you described quite a few of us in here, Steph! ❤️
