What are you working on?

This is a portrait of my mother. I still have a lot of of work to do on it. I've
roughly painted everything without any details . I'll work on the details next. They
will probably take me a long time because this is my mother and I want to get it right.
Winsor and Newton Griffin Oil Alkyds on stretched canvas.

Your work at this stage is very beautiful. Proportions look perfect. I'm curious as to the formal event she was attending.

I was listening to a podcast about Buddhism and they were mentioning certain imagery, and one was of the "monkey mind". How our mind like a monkey jumps here and there. So certain imagery popped into my head. Made me think about painting. I've heard about the new AI tools for creating images so I used Gemini. I entered this prompt....

"create an image of a monkey in a tree by a stream with a small leaf floating on the stream that flows to a lake with mountains on the horizon and a small bird that is flying above "

I also instructed it to make it look like an impressionist oil painting, which it did not do. So I then ran the image through Photosketcher and tried to make it look like an oil painting.
So somehow this is Buddhism matched with AI .

So is this my painting? Presumably I could paint this and then would it be more my painting? It was essentially what I was thinking about. It was my idea. But interestingly, I didn't originally ask for the monkey to look at the bird. The AI had the monkey look at the bird, which is .....like.....wow this AI thing is ...........huge. Put on your seatbelts folks.

Hello John
It is your idea but not your painting until you use it as a reference and paint it. Then it's yours. That's what I understand. AI is only a tool. I might add, one with a lot of information. Different versions produce vastly different results. If you want it will even give you the paint mixtures you need to make the coloring in a round about way of formulas. I have not tried that but I do find it useful to create reference images from your mind without having to draw them. As with any program, garbage in is garbage out, so you may have to try different ways of versing what you want.

I have a close friend who’s a talented landscape oil painter, and another who has created thousands of AI artworks. I love my deep conversations with the painter—each piece comes with a story, techniques, discoveries, surprises, and moments of personal growth. But with my AI artist friend, the talks often fizzle out. Most of my questions or comments end with his usual reply: “I don’t know. The AI did that,” leaving me with little more to respond than, “That’s nice.”

Opinion only, of course. If you look for info it’s there. If you want something to copy it’s there. It’s how you use the tool. A good guitar player can make a cheap guitar sound ok and a bad player can make a good guitar sound terrible. Information can be used a multitude of ways.

Spot on, Wayne. AI is a tool, like a ruler or a compass, we can use as an aid when we create our works of art. I am pretty sure the use of the ruler was seen as cheating and the end of real art after its invention, when artists started using it.

Hi Wayne, That's interesting that you are using it. I never would have guessed.

Yeah for it to be a painting we have to paint it at least right?

I printed it out on canvas, so now I could paint over it and then it would be my painting? Other artists do that to their prints. Kinkade used to do that.

This stuff is a grey area. And they say all art was born on previous art so ....

It was fun to do but I can't see using it much.

AI is like the new camera obscura.

It's funny because some of my paintings are from photos and bit's of other photos pasted in and tracing of photos, which is cheating? But somehow this AI stuff seems like cheating even more. If cheating is even a thing in creating art.

John, AI is no different than other graphic programs except it has a bad rap. I know one artist doing very well in the abstract field using filters to develop the picture and then basically painting the filtered image. In the old days they used booze and drugs to alter perceptions and now we use Technology. And of course as you say people paint over images transposed on to some support. As to who is cheating who and who cares that’s for I don’t know who. Enjoy yourself.

Cheating is deceiving. The only time I can see any idea of cheating in art, as in anything else, like exams, is saying you did something yourself when you didn’t. So even if AI was totally responsible for everything that was produced by your prompt, and you admitted that, then where is the cheating? And if someone then knowingly bought the painting, where is the problem?

Good points Wayne. Hadn't thought of the drug angle. I guess that's Altered Intelligence. :)
