Darn! I had the perfect drawing for that but it's in a sketchbook back home and I don't have a photo of it. It was a dinosaur/snake hybrid with tentacle arms and a top hat.
Thanks, Christine, sure. The idea was to show the relative volumes of the earth vs it's atmosphere. So I figured out the ratio and actually made a box that I cut out to fit a basketball in to give me some kind of model. It's not quite exact but all the atmosphere would fit in the corners of the box.
Trying to get the shadows and some perspective drove me nuts, so one part of the globe looks flat and the others stick out a little. It's watercolor and acrylic. I like how the arctic polar ice seems to stick out of the top. Some people have had to touch it to see if it really does so I guess that's a win.
The wood grain effect was done in watercolor with a fan brush. I was surprised how well it worked out.
The background scene is homes by the beach with waves crashing on shore and I tried to match the circular cloud formation to the hurricane on the earth to bring the scene together. I doubt that anyone really catches that. There is a subtle plume of smoke from the houses up into the sky. Yes this is about man made climate change. My environmental science background came out here.
For the waves and sailboat I referred to Winslow Homer's "Fog Warning" in which the mother ship sends out a warning to the dory to get back before the fog bank rolls in. In that painting the fisherman has some halibuts that he's bringing back. I've thought about trying to copy that painting and replace the fish with an earth globe. This is that painting.....
John, thank you for the fabulous description. I think it’s wonderful. The piece, and also all the thought and symbolism behind it. It’s such a strong visual piece that I hope it’s on a wall somewhere others can appreciate it.
And I like your Wu Humble piece. The colours and the lighting are very striking. Sno you’re very versatile and I think I may have seen this piece or something like that before from you. Very well done. Arty, I love your whimsical painting! It’s so much fun and well done.
