The harlequin as charlatan?

Can a harlequin be a charletan...

Traditionally, on stage, the answer would be no. But I was thinking (in inverted commas!) of a harlequin seen as a charlatan in the world. I did not consider the figure in the traditional or historical sense. Have I dug myself out of a hole? if yes, i will be on the hunt for another, no doubt.
