Full disclosure….
I actually drew the dandelion a couple of weeks ago, but never got it posted. And it seemed lonely on the page, so I sketched a fallen leaf on the same page for the dandelion, so they could comfort each other.

Ai, I spent part of Friday and Saturday with an urban sketcher friend from Paris that I met at the symposiums.mShevweaps here taking a workshop. I took her to the art store that I sent you to with all the pigments. I still love that place. We did some nocturnal painting together.

Robin, thanks!

Jo, thanks. My iPad has been acting funny here this time. It keeps asking me to log into things I’m already logged into.lol

Pine Cone, it is fun to try and capture things a little differently once in a while. I like that your dandelion and leaf have company on the page. Nicely done!

Almost the entiir building was a spiral. It took me two days to find this palazzo, but it was worth it. Someone from the staff came outside and asked if she could take a photo of me painting it.
8 - plant/tree - watercolors

This is the biggest and most famous of the mask and costume shops here. They are spread out over 4 buildings.

9 - scary - watercolors and ink

Pine Cone - think art often talks to artists like your beautiful soft dandelion wanting company. The leaf has more weight with the 2B darks that brings out the softness of the dandelion even more. Beautiful!

Joan - another one to save, the way you create depth inside the arches so that the inner walls recede. Love it! Never seen a costume store in my life. Really cool. Did you go in and wander?

#2 chicken - substituting what came first. Egg in tonal drawing experiment. This is on Canson XL cold press watercolor paper as want to play adding wash to graphite.

Strange... I really thought I commented already!

Jade -- I like those cute cats that fit the theme!

Joan -- it's so fun seeing Venice through your art. They are all wonderful. The fish market caught my eye too, and that spiral tower on the building is wild. I like how the white and black on toned paper made the stone carving pop out. The scary guy on the right makes me think of "plague doctor" Great contrast on that one. Hope you are having a wonderful time.

Ai -- I'm with Pine Cone on the red walkway. Your rendition has peaceful atmosphere and I like it better than RL!

Fletch -- now I know I commented before, because I remember commenting on the lantern. Maybe I didn't post. Anyway, I think the lantern is pretty close to tones w/ no contour lines. The only lines really visible are on the stool. I like the egg... it has that highlight on the end... can't remember what it's called... light reflected from the table. You're making me want to try again because I've gotten pretty "1 dimensional" with my sketching.

Pine Cone -- Nice dandelion and I like the texture and curl of that leaf, the top is perfect.

Robin and Jo and lurkers, Hi!

Back later with a sketch.

Ned - Are you ready? “…light reflected from the table.” Is called (..insert a drum roll…) ”Reflected light.” 😎
Some times the obvious just floats right on by.
Fletch

Done with a 2B pencil..for some reason it was too light shade than I had expected...

#1 bottle ...sub. with my water jar
#2 box ... sub. with the lower part of the bench

Joan: Love the building archway and spiral staircases. Gorgeous sketch as well as the one of the mask shop. Glad you have fun in Venice with other artists.

Fletch: Love your chicken ... beautiful shading.

Ned, Jade, PineCone: Thanks.

Robin: Hi

Fletch -- :) that made me laugh. I thought there was a special "technical" term for it.

Ai -- nice smooth lines in the pencil sketches!

Stopped after my walk today and sat in the nice sunshine for this.

Ned Thanks., Wow... pls. let me know if there is any B&B nearby your home...so I can jump in your jeep to the beach with you...lol... The big item of my bucket list ;-) ... What a majestic nature well recorded !!! BTW, does that rock has a specific name ? I will be there with my yogamat too besides my sketch kit. :)

Fletch, I’m happy just sketching from the outside. lol Your tonal sketch of the egg is great. Could have used that in my omelet this morning.

Ned, thanks for your comment. A lot of the masks are really creepy. lol I think a lot of them are based on the Plague Doctor. Love the rugged rock out in the water. It is so different from the shire on the east coast. I enjoy these when you post them.

Ai, thanks. It was a surprise that Sandrine happened to be in Venice too. Luckily someone contacted each of us to let us know. We are having a rainy morning here…I want to be outside sketching, Wow! Impressive sketch of the roomful of students.

I discovered a fellow sketcher, Sandrine, that I know from Paris was in Venice for a workshop. We made plans to meet in the afternoon. We found a cafe with a pen empty table outside…and all the way in front so it was perfect for sketching. We were there to see the sunset and stayed unrptil it was dark. This overlooked the Canale Della Giudecca and Giudecca across the way. It us a quiet location in Venice.

10 - skyline - watercolors and ink done direct
IMG_8625.jpeg

I’m posting another skyline I painted the next evening with Sandrine down by the vaporetto docks by St Mark’s Square looking across the canal. It was nice to have a fellow artist to sketch with a few times. Sandrine and I had gone to several of the Urban Sketching Symposiums and met in Chicago, Porto, and Amsterdam.

Ai - love your graphite line work. The aerial view o& the class is really cool.

Ned - Great shading with the ink wash.

Joan - Meeting up with fellow urban artist Sandrine is so serendipitous. Amazing fun. You sunsets are pretty the second one with golden sky is my fav.

#3 Geometric - sphere. Drawn tonally in same Canson XL cold pressed sketchbook. Drawn with 9B graphite pencil. Blending with tissue, Q-tips and a stump.

Ai -- I think there might be some vacation rentals over at the coast. We are blessed with a beautiful coast here. I like the busy students, and how they are in blue and the proctor is in blank ink.

Joan -- those are nice. I like the sky in both, and the dark green/blue water in the second one.

Fletch -- nice shading! I can see the reflected highlight! :)

#2 animal - this critter is called a Pacific Mole Crab. They live in the sand where the surf washes over it. The animal was not alive and I added the antennae from memory/imagination. The antennae only come out in the water to catch plankton.

Here's where I was sitting when I ate lunch then sketched the crab:

Joan: Thanks. Love the artworks done in Venice in both pieces. I like the distant vista too, not easy to come by.

Ned: Thanks. The sea creature is very well done and rare to us. Thanks for sharing.

Fletch: Thanks. Love your shading in graphite... beautiful elegant result.

Pine Cone, wow the dandelion is so well done. It is the kind we have in the grass here. I like the layers of petals. They look so pretty when our yard is full of them. Nice company of the leaf with the bloom. Yay!

Joan, my tech, Joanna always says to "reboot", it clears so many things. There is a "hard reboot" that seems to clear more. Not sure how to do it but you can see in apple help. Works on the phone, too. I really like the spiral building. You really captured the look -- gorgeous. The costume shop is scary. Ha. The skyline paintings are super. The first is calm and peaceful. I think the coloring, even with the action in the water. The second is vibrant and exciting. Oh how fun to find your friend for sketching. It is soooo much fun to sketch with you!!

Fletch, oh my, beautiful egg. you make me want to get out a pencil and eraser ... well, sort of. You do inspire with your great renderings. Love the "reflected light". The sphere is equally well done. You mastered shading and form.....

Ai, your water jar is a neat shape. Great find for box. The proctor exam is so well done, I too, like the two colors, just beautiful to see.

Ned, I always look forward to your beach scenes with the huge rocks. you have a nice touch on them with your shading. Reminds me of some of the beaches in Peru when we were there. We would take the gas BBQ and Gene would cook Argentine steaks, baked potatoes and mushrooms. We would take real plates and silverware and have some Argentine or Chilean wine. Good old days...... The mole crab is sort of creepy looking. Nice find! Can you eat them?? Beautiful photos.

Fletch, super shading on the sphere. You do those so well. I rarely practice anything in graphite. It is interesting to do a nocturnal painting. By the end you can’t see the colors on the paper or on the palette.

Ned, cute sketch of the crab. It looks sort of like the ones we have here although I haven’t examined one since I was a kid. They had the same sort of domed shell and would quickly bury themselves.

Ai, thanks. I hope they bring back nice memories of when you were in Venice.

Jo, I am always afraid to reboot and that things will be worse or changed. lol I just keep my fingers crossed that my posts, especially on my blog, actually work. Thanks for your comments on my work.

#5 vehicle -- Thai longtail boat
#6 sub. statue with teddy bears
#7 scary ...the human dark blob in the middle of old Thai canal house at BangLuang Canal...Sketched from 2nd floor of the Artist House Cafe. I was trying to do a person as silhouette but it went overboard, and I think it may be Halloween character... Pencil+Watercolor
