Scavenger Hunt from Life #169 - Aug 30 - Sep 11

Ai, let me know how the baby pineapples last if you try them.๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ We didn't get much rain from this "storm." It drizzled most of the day, but we need more than just drizzle.

Jade, I love the color version of Bob with his round orange eyes. Cute! Where I live in NY isn't quite as beachy as it seems. We have a lot of marinas and boats down by the water, but not a lot of shops right by the water. The town centers are a little bit away from the water. What you described is a lot like what is is like up where my sister lives in Maine. I think we are going to have a few days that feel a bit like autumn. That's fine too.

Fletch, thank you. I'm glad you have a connection to the locations I sketch. My back is a bit better today...keeping my fingers crossed. I don't want to do anything much until I hear back from the doctor after he sees the MRI report.

Since it was a drizzly day I sketched inside a coffee shop that I hadn't been to before.

Thanks Joan! It felt extra nice drawing Bob. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Ah yes, Maine does sound like what I'm describing now you said it. I always dread autumn because it means winters coming which I don't like so much but ๐Ÿ‚ autumn is beautiful.
i love this painting . The greys work really well. ๐Ÿฉถ

thanks for nice words and encouragement
JOan,Ai, Jade, formidable job.

I made these yesterday.
I tried to draw the clouds based on what they reminded me of.

A person lying on their back, an airplane, an owl, a whale, and just a cloud...

Joan - The detail you capture in wc blows me away. Seeing this coffee shop sketch I started thinking one of the reasons I never pursued wc was most of the wc work I had seen was pale colors and little detail. Thank you,

Joe. - Your clouds all made me smile. Nice pen work on the apple and pear.

Jade, Jo, Pine Cone, Robin - ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿฝ

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Jade, many, many thanks.

Ai, it was nice to find a cafe that I hadn't sketched in. I wasn't aware that this one existed in Patchogue. I have sketched in 2 other Southdown Coffee locations, but each one is a little different. Mostly when I look for a coffee place Starbucks is all I find. They all look the same and I think their coffee is terrible.

Fletch, thank you. I think this one was more of an ink sketch with watercolor washes added. The ladies behind the counter were so excited when I showed it to them. The one that is actually in the sketch took a photo of it.๐Ÿ“ธ

Today I had a number of errands to do, but got two small sketches done in two different places.

Hi All!

Wow, there is so much here in this hunt, that's great! I've been peeking on my phone as it went along. Now there are too many to comment on them all but I enjoyed looking through them. I liked Fletch's apple and the sky over Ai's building way back on the first page. Jade you made me chuckle and smile :)

I tried to sketch a blue bottle.... will see about posting it later this evening or tomorrow morning. I lose ground fast when I don't practice ( not that I have too far to fall lol ).

I remember finding a blue glass bottle when I was a teenager cutting trees for my grandfather on the bank in front of the house. I'm not sure if this is the same one, but it's in the same house!

darn, you can't see the reflections I was trying to sketch in the photo:

Ned: Thanks... Hello !!! I love your blue bottle sketch; it is so special with the good story behind it. Reflection on glass bottle is always challenging to me too. BTW, how tall is this bottle as Tone loves to collect the old found bottles too.

joe1lt โ€” {{{Thanks}}} for the best wishes โ˜€๏ธ I love all these sketches, and your apple and pear are very 3D!!! The cool way you drew the clouds (as what you saw in them) reminded me of being a kid, and finding animals in all the clouds as they wandered the skies ๐Ÿ˜‚ Thanks for the memories of simpler times ๐Ÿ˜Œ
Your schedule for school sounds like it will be intenseโ€ฆ.. I hope youโ€™ll have an occasional chance to relax and sketch, and SLEEP, you have to get your rest!!! Take care of yourself ๐Ÿ™

Jade โ€” Your sketches of the red car and the positive pants made me smile ๐Ÿ˜‚ Good job celebrating the wonderful person that you are ๐Ÿ˜
Very cool sketches of bits of nature (including humanity), and flowers, happily co-existing โ˜€๏ธ
But I know you know which one is my fav - โค๏ธBobโค๏ธ - and in beautiful color, looking at me and wondering why Iโ€™m not giving him a treat ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have you told him that you made this sketch into your avatar ?!?!? Amazing sketch, lovely fur, soulful eyes, very expressive momentโ€ฆ.. Thanks so much for sharing Bob, and making my day โค๏ธ

JoC โ€” Hi ๐Ÿ‘‹ I have been sketching a little. Iโ€™ve been back to the pond a few times to try again with sketching the ducks, but what little Iโ€™ve done duck-wise seems to be getting worse instead of better lol. So Iโ€™ve taken some pics of the ducks, and will try to sketch a few from references rather than life. Also, Iโ€™m thinking of trying to correct one of my worst duck sketches from life, using the photos I took, as part of the โ€œre-train my brain to seeโ€ aspect of my Re-Learn Drawing Plan. I havenโ€™t done that yet, but if I do, Iโ€™ll try to get it posted. Iโ€™m also thinking of dipping back into Phase 1 of my plan, which was just focus on being able to draw lines and circles.
So fortunate for that man near your PT that you were there, and willing to help him โค๏ธ
Cool purse, and super detailing of its various bits!!!
I hope your healing continues well. That kind of thing always takes time, but youโ€™re a strong and brave personโ€ฆ.. sending you positive vibes โค๏ธ Hang in there, and enjoy your walks โ˜€๏ธ

Joan โ€” Itโ€™s good youโ€™re taking it easy for your back. Sending positive vibes โค๏ธ Like JoC, youโ€™re a determined and strong person - hang in there, and enjoy your sketching โ˜€๏ธ Your sketches continue to be wonderfulโ€ฆ.. Beautiful scenes with the Fire Island Bridge, and the sailboats. Super interesting the way you did the construction scene, and I got quite a wistful vibe from the โ€œneglectedโ€ scene you chose. Super car ๐Ÿ˜Š
About your coffee shop, Iโ€™m with Fletch when he said, โ€œThe detail you capture in wc blows me awayโ€. Itโ€™s a very special sketch, and captures the delicate beauty of grays that I love. And for me, the grays strengthen the meaning of the entire sketch with its subtle colors and spacious composition ๐ŸŽจ (And FWIW, I donโ€™t like Starbucks eitherโ€ฆ tastes burned to me ๐Ÿ˜ lol)

txomsy โ€” Ouch, but glad your wife is healingโ€ฆ.. Sending good vibes to you all โค๏ธ Wonderful advice from your Paris trip ๐Ÿ‘ Interesting details, and wise take-aways ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Ai โ€” Exceptional sketch of the baby pineapples and their vase ๐Ÿ˜ I keep studying it, everything from the lovely colors of the pineapples, to the superb whites and grays of the vase and shadow, to the edging (for example the bottom edge of the vase)โ€ฆ.. what a superb paintingโ€ฆ.. ๐ŸŽจ

Ned โ€” Good to see you, and I love both your sketch of the bottle, and the bottle itself ๐Ÿ‘ as well as the story you shared. I believe itโ€™s the same one, it has to be ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ‘‹ Back on post #16, I posted a sketch of a tree trunk, and mentioned that it had three different kinds of bark.

I went back a couple of days ago, and got a pic of the tree. Iโ€™ve typed notes about the bark directly on the pic itself (after I removed part of the background).

Even though itโ€™s late, I hope itโ€™s okay to post it below ๐Ÿ™

Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹

NedL good to see you again and good job on the beautifully coloured blue bottle.. I have yet to tackle drawing glass! it was interesting to hear it's back story too. ๐Ÿ’™

PineCone I always enjoy your lovely thoughtful comments to us all here.. like your sketching, you notice the little details.๐Ÿ™ Glad you liked the funny ones and of course, your friend Bob! I did tell him he's now my avatar and I also tell him all the lovely comments he receives and what his friend PineCone says (yes, we spend the most of each day chatting ๐Ÿ˜น Keeps me sane!). Love to you on your part of the world from us both ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ

Ned, it is so good to see you again. I like the treasure of the blue bottle and you did a great job with the sketch. I love sketches that have a story to go with them. I hope this is the same bottle and it was saved all this time.:) It is an unusual shape for a glass bottle. I wonder what was in it.

Pine Cone, thanks for your comments. I felt bad saying the building and area in the "neglected" sketch were in fact neglected. They are part of a marina that I love and the buildings seem to be the least important part of the location. The salt air affects everything there and it is more important to maintain the boats than the buildings. They patch them as much as they can, but peeling walls and broken window panes seem to come with the area. I like it because it gives the location character. Love looking at your analysis of the tree bark. You notice all the details!!

Jade, hi!

I hope everyone has a good morning. My plein air group is returning to the same private garden we were in last week, so I'm hoping to finish up all the greenery in the garden I was painting last week. That will be much better than finishing the painting it from my photos.

Joan - hope you had a good day painting in the garden ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽจ

Ai - nicely done ๐Ÿ‘ŒI always find those kind of perspectives too tricky. ๐Ÿง

Ps I meant to ask, who out of the thread has been here 20 years?

Hi Jade and everyone - Yes I would have been following the Scavenger Hunt for about 20 years! Particularly when it was such an important part of Wet Canvas. I've always loved sketching and drawing from life, but don't have a lot of time to post my sketches. But I still post some from time to time. I always look in to see what you all are posting, and love reading your comments. Hope everyone is doing ok and keeping well.

Hi Vivien,

That's really impressive! I think it's nice there's no pressure when life's busy and you can come back and forth or just pop in. Thanks for replying and hope you're well too xx

I also do Journaling (I see you do as well). But i must admit theres more Art in my Sketchbooks than journalling now.

I do tho I haven't for a while since I've been getting back to drawing. I only really clicked with journalling when art was part of it. ๐Ÿ˜€

Ai, I love all the sketches you do of the students during proctoring. Do you do them as continuous line sketches?

Jade, it was beautiful in the garden. I'm posting it 99.99% finished. It will probably be one of my framed pieces when our group does our show in November. I would think I've probably been doing the Scavenger Hunts here and on WetCanvas before that for at least 20 years. I wonder how long it has actually been. Jo, Ai, Vivien and I know each other from there.

Vivien, it seems like we've been doing the hunts forever. I haven't been over to WetCanvas in years, but I know some people still participate there.

I don't do journaling that involves writing, except on my blog which often has a story to go with the sketch or painting I post. I do that every day. Most of the time I can do it when I travel too.

Here is the painting with what I updated today. I did a lot of the foreground work.
