Scavenger Hunt #169: Aug 30 – Sep 11

Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.

  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ai, you have so many wonderful temples and unusual boats to sketch. I love seeing what you post from your part of the world. I love that little red lamp in the middle of that plate. It adds red to that part of the sketch to balance it nicely.

We still walked around our homestay and found a shrine to sketch for a while

#7 a building ..a local shrine of ThaChaLom...done in a 2 page spread of A4 size sketchbook...The intricate details of Chinese shrines are so challenging...

Joan — Thanks for a fun new list — lovely mix of nature, urban, and home 😊
Awe-inspiring cloudy scene….. couldn’t look away….. 🎨

Ai — Fantastic work !!! Your sketches on the water with boats and distant shores are always full of interest and color. And I look forward to seeing the food you share, and imagining the flavors and surroundings. But your special talents really shine as you visit and sketch the gorgeous temples of your country. As you said, it must be incredibly difficult, but somehow you share both their beautiful details and the unique spirit of each temple you sketch. Thank you for bringing us along with you 🙏

1 - “flowers” - small grouping of flowers and rocks…
…..in a residential area
…..nestled on, and against, a bit of a hill

— non-virtual sketch

— sketched inside my mobile studio
— from about 25-30 feet away (???)

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)
— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

— freehand

Continuing with my Re-Learning to Draw Plan, Phase 2, here is a small scene. I’m still struggling, so this is another “Notes to Self” sketch. And I’m simply grateful to be out and about finding bits of beauty to see, and learn from, and share.

Joan, Jade, and PineCone : Thanks so much.

Jone: What lovely clouds you have sketch, I can feel the peeking light ...I wish for your spine speedy recovery.

Pinecone: Thanks. Glad you pulled through a tough night and kindness was sent your way. Wonderful delicate flowers...

Good morning, everyone!

Ai, I love how you are able to simplify those complex temples. You make it all so believable with mostly spots of different colors!! It is so colorful too. I would still be staring at it and wondering where to start.

Pine Cone, thank you. We had gone to sketch the sunset and the sky didn't disappoint. Your flowers tucked around the rocks are lovely. You found a small scene with a lot of subtle impact. You are good at selecting spots that prove we don't need a whole landscape to enjoy nature. Nicely done!!

Jade, your little friend hanging on to the "tree" is so great...all of it is so softly done. Is this regular colored pencil or dry watercolor pencils? Great job on this.

Ok... I am back to Bangkok home now. Done this in digi with Microsoft Paint, using a stylus to draw.

#8 in a bottle -- ink
#9 personal grooming tool

Jade, thanks. I don't do much with colored pencils, but I should keep some around for shading.

Ai, nice digital sketches. The brush is my favorite, but the strong blue ink bottle is good too.

Sketched poolside today.

Ai — Thanks so much for kindness and comments ☀️ I’m glad you’re back safe, and your fun Paint sketches prove it — yummy color of blue ink, and great detail in both sketches 👍

Jade — Thanks so much, and what a cool little creature you sketched!!! Look at that face!!! And those perfect little feet!!! Those eyes and ears tell the whole story ❤️ Living work….. and I’ve learned to expect that from you….. 👏

Joan — I appreciate your comment, and it helps me to know it’s okay to continue with this re-learning approach, a bit at a time.
With your sunset sketch, I was speechless… the hints of sun mixing chaotically (truthfully) with the jumbled, natural movement of the clouds….. it’s an overpowering sketch in a sense. We are so small in the vastness of our sky, our storms, our universe. What a sketch….. 🎨
Also, fun poolside sketch - great composition and super relaxed feel ☀️

2 - “free space #1” - three kinds of bark on tree trunk

— non-virtual sketch

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)
— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

— freehand

I was eating lunch under this tree, and noticed that there were three different kinds of bark (!!!) along the trunk.

So I decided to try sketch just the trunk, with all three kinds of bark (as well as some scars and damage), and see what I could learn.

This is definitely in the “Notes-to-Self” category of my Drawing Rehab Plan, and it was a lot of fun 🤪 I hope I can remember the three kinds of bark from this sketch, and perhaps come back and sketch it again, one of these days 🙏

Note — This is actually larger on my iPad screen than the real sketch in real life. By quite a bit. When I made the upload version small, the thin lines were so pixelated, that I had to make it bigger. Sorry about that.

Joan: Thanks. Beautiful poolside rendition of a relaxed pose of the lady. Great proportion of the body and the pool tile texture is top-notch.

PineCone: Thanks. Wonderful delicate sketch of the tree trunks. Your love of nature shows in your sketch.
