Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-9

Here are the rules for the Hunt:
  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Hello Ned, thanks so much for the list.... I sure have so much of "clutter"...uhm how to jot them down... haha.

Here is my first done without any layers (as I don't know how... haha) on Microsoft paint, and Microsoft surface pro using the stylus.

#1 pink ... about 15 minutes

Ned, thanks so much for the new list.

Ai, love the pink headphones!!! Are they yours or do they belong to one of the girls?

My plein air group met at a lavender field this morning. I was afraid it was going to be super hot, but I had my painting umbrella and it turned out to be quite pleasant. I did one 5 x 7 painting that took most of my time, but then I was waiting for one of my friends and had a few minutes to do a quick (maybe 10 minutes) sketch on a postcard-sized paper. I like the looseness of that one more than the one that I worked on longer. lol

2 - plants - direct watercolor

Joan: Thanks. It is mine... but the real thing is not that bright pink. Lovely flower fields for both. The quick one has a nice loose field to it.

Ai -- nice digital sketch of the headphones! I've got something pink in mind but it might be a couple days. Tomorrow I'm driving to the Olympic Peninsula for a hike.

Joan -- I like them both too, quick one does give a nice impression.

Ned, thanks for the new Hunt! Looks interesting.

Ai, awww, fun pink headphones. I don't think we have any anymore.

Joan, both paintings are great. Fun to see the detail and formal one compared to the loose one. Love the sky in both!

This will be a busy week. I'll try to get something in tomorrow.

Ai, thanks for your comments on the lavender fields.

Ned, thanks. I like the lightness in the quick one of the lavender field. I left more white spaces...somethng I have to work on.

Jo, I should do more quick paintings. I usually like the way they come out.

For some reason the sketch of the guy with the hot sauce from the last hunt didn't show. I wonder why...Anyway, I'm posting it again here for you to see.

Hi Art Buddies -

Ned - thanks for fun list....(y)

Ai - looove those colors...and the solid digital feel

Joan - purple plants are looking good....really throws a curve in the scene but purple is like that....great painting!

Hi Fletch, JoC, Joe1 and "you know whoever" Here's hoping......

Robin, Jo, Ned: Thanks.

Joan:
It is so interesting to hear that you are trying to improve on leaving white on the lavender pieces. I feel that you have mastered, as you are so dedicate to paint/sketch so much daily.... very inspiring to know your thought. I am glad you repost the hot sauce scene. It is super !!!

Ai - fun looking digirtal. Great contour lines with graphite.

Joan - love both lavender fields. The first has a feel of detail. The second has that soft watercolor feel. Love the sky in the second. Hey we get to see the Pepper guy!

#1 keys - multiple grades of graphite. After Joan’s dark pencil mention I thought I would pull out an 8B lumograph for the black on the fob. Need to play with the lumograph more to remember how to use them properly. I did not think this pocket sketchbook had much texture but the soft black really makes it more obvious.

Keep sketching and learning

Sorry for sloppy photo. Shade on bottom is me and the camera.

Hi everyone 👋 ☺️

Oh how I’ve missed you all y’all 😉

Ned - Thanks for a fun list !!!

Ai - Cool headphones 💞 They look happy 😄 Those bottles are super interesting, and you sketched them beautifully ☀️

Joan - I’m with everyone else - I love them both - I know what you mean about the loose freedom of the 2nd one (I struggle with that), but the 1st one is full of wild wonderous beauty, and the sky is superb….. so to me, they’re both amazing 😂 The hot sauce sketch too - love the way your colors go with your experience there (I lurked on the last event 😁 and read about that with a smile !)

Fletch - Ooo, 8B, yummy 😁 Luv the texture and shading, and admire your lines and detail - wonderful to see after so long☀️

Hi JoC and Robin and joe1lt and everyone 👋

———————————————-

Everyone - Back in September last year, I wrote that I was going to start over with re-learning how to draw. But I never did. I haven’t sketched anything since then.

And I’m sorry (again, again, again) for being away so long.

But I did a sketch yesterday, FINALLY, with encouragement from kind people, and will try to get it posted today or tomorrow 🙏☺️

 Fletch, your keys are so good. The dark pencil makes pop!! Thanks for getting the darks out.

Pine Cone! Yay, great to see you. I mentioned you to Gene just last week. Miss your thoughtful comments and ideas. We welcome sketches and practice as you know.

1 - “Outdoors” - road construction sign

Note: I drew the sign itself from life, but the background is not from life. (See below.) I hope that’s okay ???

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)

— Cheap sketchbook by PenGear (from WalMart)

— Bad photo, sorry, the paper is actually still clean, but appears dirty in the pic

tl:dr (“too long, don’t read”)

Some of you know I became homeless (through no fault of my own) two years ago. But I tried to do a few sketches after that, which I posted on these events, and discovered that I had suddenly lost my ability to draw 😳 when I became homeless. I felt completely lost, like I’d never drawn anything. But worst of all, I didn’t seem to be able to LEARN in order to start over again.

Anyway, kind people have encouraged me to try again. And so I have a new plan…… go back to FIRST BASICS - relearn how to draw lines, and ellipses. And part of the plan is to not worry about anything else, like correctness, or colors, or looseness, or shadows or anything. Just try to do a few lines and circles ☺️

————————————

Full disclosure - I sketched the sign and the outline of the Sign Person outside in my mobile studio. But it was blazing hot, and my ancient mobile studio no longer has air conditioning, so I went indoors to fill in the Sign Person.

Then, since my First Basics Plan is all about playing with lines and circles, just for fun, I added an imaginary background (not to scale) made of lines and circles…… Although it echoes places I’ve lived and seen in my travels, it’s imaginary.

Ai -- very nice smooth lines on those bottles! Well done.

Fletch -- nice smooth shading on those keys and key fob, and nice lines on the rings!

Pine Cone -- nice to see you here again! When I don't sketch for a few weeks, what I notice most is that my lines aren't smooth and it takes a long time for them to start getting better. I like your sign and I like the background too! I think the circles and lines in the background are neat.

Jo, Robin, Lurkers... hi!

I knew there was an old egg beater around here somewhere but it was a "scavenger hunt" to find it. It says patented 1908 so probably more than a hundred years old.

#1 egg beater

PINE CONE. - WELCOME HOME! You have been missed. The sign is great and I love the background. Interestingly the lines of the man-made sign are bold and straight while the lines of nature in the back are light and fluid. Don‘t think you have really forgotten how to draw …might just feel like it.

Ned - how did you not go bleary eyed following those ellipses LOL Nicey done. Great metal texture!

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch
