Scavenger Hunt #141: Dec 13 - 20, 2024
Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists.

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Ai, thanks for the new list. Hope to get more done this hunt.

Right before we were traveling I took my car in to Nissan because it was making a "minor" rumbling sound once in a while. They told me it was the transmission and it was $$$. We rented a car for the trip to GA and ever since we got home I've been looking at new cars. It was exhausting! I hate buying cars. We settled on a Toyota Rav 4 and will get it on Tuesday...yay!! It is a small SUV and should be much easier for us to get in and out of.

I did get out to sketch this morning before we went to Toyota.
1 - figure - watercolors and ink
2 - wood fencing and posts
3 - red bows - green trees

Joan, so beautiful and rich. Love it. Bummer to have to go car shopping. Sounds like you found something you like. Yay!

We went to a cafe on a big canal which also converted from an old soy sauce factory.

#1 Clay ...fermented soy bean pots
#2 Wood ...soy sauce factory
#3 multicolor...long tail boat

Ai, love the soy sauce factory and long boat. Thanks for taking us on journeys around your home country of Thailand. I've learned so much.

Joan - love the strong colors in Garden Center sketch. Good luck with the new car. We have that coming up as our lease up soon.

Ai - One thing amazes me is all the cafes in Thailand, Seems every hunt you go to a different cafe near you. And they all have cool themes. Multicolored long boat is an interesting find. At least here boats are typically a single color.

Keep sketching
Fletch

Hey, Fletch. Good to see you!

I sketched at the easel playing in the dust. Wiped off MiTientes paper, I think it was the pine cones and some demo eyes and stuff for my granddaughter. Just 30 minutes or so. Number 1 green and Number 2 white. Assorted pastels.

Jo, thank you. Great pastel of the Mexican bowl and the white bowl. Nice contrast.

Ai, thanks. I'm always amazed by the different kinds of locations you find to sketch. The soy sauce factory looks like such a fun place and your sketches are great. Like Jo, I get a lot of enjoyment seeing your world. Thanks for sharing the sketches and the photos.

Fletch, thanks so much. We usually buy, but we're planning on leasing this time...never had a SUV before.

After doing some Christmas shopping I stopped at the beach for a little while.
5 - free space #1 - watercolors

Jo, Joan, all: Thanks.

Jo: Love your white and green pastel...excellent shadows.

Joan: Wonderful to see your relaxing spot. Great outcome.

All you fountain pen users. Curious what inks you use and if you find different brands clog nibs? Asking as I have 3 bottle inks and 2 brands of cartridges. When I do not use then for a few days I find Noodler ink dries out on nibs and I have ti clean them, I have Bulletproof Black and Antietam by Noodler and both behave that way. I also have a bottle of Lamy black which even after a week still glows. Cartridges I have Platinum and Lamy and neither of those dry out. Anyone else have similar experience with some brands drying out if not used regularly?

Jo - recognize the Corning Wear design on the pot. Both look great. Love how you did shadows and background.

Joan - the hint of a path is alluring. Want to follow it into the dunes.

#1 ceramic - tree ornament. Ink in A5ish sketchbook. Thinking to try some light washes if color later. Will see how day goes.

Ai, thanks. I was nearby shopping at a holiday market, so I stopped when I was finished shopping.

Jo, thanks so much. I can't keep away for too long.

Fletch, thanks. I like your bear ornament. I would go for the color!

6 - glass windows - watercolors and ink
7 - plastic pots
8 - cloth on the table
9 - decorations (kissing balls, wreaths)
10 - light

Joan: Lovely farm stand ...window is nicely done.

Jo: Very cute decoration. Sorry I do not have much experience in using FPen... The ink clogged mine too. and I don't know how to clean the pens.

Joan - Someday I will be able to paint watercolo almost that good. Going to take a lot of practice.

Ai - trying to figure out if it is the type ink. By the web pigment inks clog up quick. Problem is I only have 1 pigmented ink (Platinum Carbon) and it works fine. It is 2 Noodler dye based that are clogging up. Other option is bad seal and they are both pens with screw on caps.

Here is color added. Slightest touch of water and the ink bled.

Fletch, love the bear ornament. With and without color. The ink bleeding just made shadows. Looks great!

Joan, love your Farmstand sketch. Never heard of kissing balls, I assume with mistletoe. Very lovely sketch.

The kid showed up late today to get our decorations out of the attic so I did some other things with no sketching. Hopefully tomorrow.

Jo, I guess there is mistletoe on the kissing balls. I never really thought about it. lol Thanks for your comment.

Vivien, I like your Christmas pooch! Cute!! Enjoy your holiday time in the sun and come back with some sketches to share with us. Happy Holidays!!

Right now I'm taking a break from writing out my Christmas cards...my hands were cramping. I may be able to finish them tonight now that I bought more blank cards. I think I send out too many. lol I did get a sketch done today. Will post that after dinner.
