What I like about cell phone (or P&S for that matter) photography is its simplicity - you can whip out the camera at a moment's notice and snap away, and it teaches one to look at world around us and see all the beauty and interesting shapes in it. The limitations of the equipment also forces creativity.

Darkening the picture really kicks up the "energy" in it; makes it a more powerful picture. The original is, "OK, sunrise (set?)...", but the modified one hints of violence: is it a storm brewing? A volcano? Or what?
Also, the slight tilt of the line of light keeps it from being a static, almost boring, photo.
(I hope that I explained myself well enough.)
