Sorry, but corundum is harder on the Mohs scale--sapphire and ruby. So is topaz. Granite is of course much tougher, though not as tough as jadeite and nephrite, the two forms of jade.

True, harder than marble, but hardly the second hardest compared to diamond.

Oy vey. Guess what? They knew what they were doing. They were just as smart as modern people, though a lot of modern people seem to have a hard time with that idea.
