Art Supply Finds

Thank you Arty and NTL. I am seeing rare specialists as the severe E- asthma is not responding to treatment and is part of severe multiple sensitivity. I recently found out it is actually more serious. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome which is a body wide anaphylaxis, an over-reaction to everything including needed medicines. It’s a very severe immune problem and can be seen in the cells of a bone marrow test. Mast cells are everywhere so when they get triggered you get ill in correspondence to those organs. So, that and the toxic reactions of meds I do ‘tolerate’ leaves me too weak to hold a book, dress myself at times and even in heart failure. I hope to draw or use watercolour if I can muster the energy some day. The heavy prednisone is destroying my bones ( teeth, broken ribs/ soft bones, and crushing the spine), but I must use it to get any kind of breathing relief. It’s unbelievable and deadly without it. It is also causing the severe edema, and heart failure. Diuretics don’t work on me to treat that, or I have allergic responses to them. So I am really disabled now. But not quite ready to give up all my art supplies yet. It’s been life changing and humbling to be this chronically ill. Now I need a wheelchair. I still have my large blank canvases in my living room. I stare at them with a lot of plans and longing. I know you will understand that. Lol It’s the artist in me! Just not ready to cry uncle yet. And although close, I hope I don’t have to. It represents hope for me. That is a positive thing.
I hope you both are well-go out there and keep creating for me!
Musket, that is a beautiful piece.👍🏻🙂
Best wishes.

Thank you all for such heartfelt responses. Touched my heart.🙏🏻 I have a tiny but loving immediate family. They help me but it has been very difficult for them too. At times the struggle to breathe and heavy meds cause me to loose all motor function and speech. I can blink and breathe ( well… I can be having asthma attacks too so that is relatively speaking). Cannot make noise or move. At times I go into partial or full body seizure like shaking, or appear catatonic. It can affect gait, walking etc. Lasts minutes or hours. Once 12 hours. First time, by myself. Couldn’t get or call for help or reach for my asthma rescue meds. So I understand tremors a bit Claud.😉It is incredibly aggravating to not have any control of the body. Being locked in is….horrible. Sometimes I am fully alert and other times not. My speech is very slurred at times too during the day.
But I like wobbly circles, never fear! Lol You know the more of life I experience, the more I think we should love the wobbles, not the perfection!😉
Still smiling most days. Still interested in the world. I just appreciate every little ability or things in life now to a degree many just take for granted. That’s normal. You don’t know what you had, or how easy it was, until you don’t have it anymore. I am glad most don’t have to know with such a fine point on the lesson. Just go out and do everything you can while you can. It truly can change overnight. It is so strange not to be able to recover as I always had in the last from health issues. I should have not held back. So go for it people!

I love your words, PB, and of course I am also frightened by them. Being Locked In or unable to fulfill one's basic needs is something that has been on my mind, not wholly because my partner nurses 'complex care". Like you say, it can happen to anyone. Anyhow. I have come to appreciate lines that are closest to the multifaceted wobbliness of our reality. GB you my friend. ××

Yes, this make you appreciate everything, even though it is all very frustrating. This is normal. Hang in there. You have a good view of things it sounds like.

Hello Paint Boss I am so very sorry to hear of your misfortune.. Gosh, my heart goes out to you.. I will ask a special prayer for you and for all whose heart and creativity are so unfairly afflicted.. God's healing to you

I've made some very good finds lately. Several days ago, I came across a Sienna pochade box in a thrift shop. I bought it for $4.95.its brand new..It literally does. not. have. a. mark. on. it. Included was a wood pallette, nothing else.

So I got to thinking about the Sienna pochade I found at the thrift store the other day... was there also a tripod? I have a couple good ones at home, so initially I didn't even think of it, as I was so surprised to even come across the pochade in the first place. But if the original owner spent the money on the pochade, maybe they went all the way and bought the tripod, too... and maybe it is here in the store. My other tripods (Velbon, Manfrotto, Ambico, Sun Eden) have all come from either thrift store or a yard sale. I stopped in the store, found the electronics section, and low and behold, there it was. And... it is also a Sienna. I got it for $30... not a scratch on it...

While I was there, I really scoured the store (it is a somewhat dirty, messy and smelly store, in a pretty sketchy neighborhood in the nearest city to me, so I have only ever been there twice before). But now I was on a mission...

I found a Sienna panel holder for $4.95 and what turned out to be the worktop of the Sienna art bench (had to look around on google) for $7.95. I asked was there another piece to this? (took a bit of explaining and I didn't want to appear too eager or make it seem too valuable), and it was broken in two pieces out back by the dumpster being rained on. The guy said it arrived whole but somehow got backed into. I asked if I could have the pieces and he put them in my car trunk for me! Free! My Dad and uncles are all master woodworkers and this is going to be an easy peasy fix for them..

I also found a nice book 'Watercolor Depth and Realism' by Laurie Humble for $3.95 and a 36" Logan aluminum ruler for $4.95.. Oh, also a nice summer skirt to wear plein aire painting for $5.95..!

Hey, send some of that pixie dust to me! Congrats on those great finds, that's quite a treasure trove! Wow, good for you. You're probably STILL excited. :) :) :)
My find, a little bit ago: I've just started using cad orange, and love it with cobalt blue. For years I had a large tube if it unused, in a cupboard, but last Sept (2020) had to suddenly move, my DD packed the house, and though my studio is pretty well set up, I hadn't seen it. I was looking for two other colors, when lo and behold, there it was, she had put it in the "extra tubes" case, which I haven't opened since before she packed up... I'm so pleased it made the trip!

All that sounds great you guys! I just ordered a small set of those Copic alcohol pens and am looking forward to playing around with them. They were not cheap though.

Michaels is clearancing Talens Ecoline Brush Pens, Montana ACRYLIC markers and Prismacolor alcohol markers for $1ea. Also 24pks of Nupastels for $13 and 12pks of Nupastels for $5.

Too bad I already bought those Copic pens.

Yesterday I drove an hour to the nearest "art supply" store nearest to me, which is a Hobby Lobby. They have practically nil there. It was like the old Michaels only worse. I was able to get some spray paint, but waited forever for someone to get it for me under lock and key. I also got a couple of dowels I needed for carving, some enamel paints, and some twine. Three of the ten things on my list. The rest I ordered online. I was looking for some specialty papers that I could feel in person. No dice! :(

I know, Hobby Lobby is really spiraling as far as art supplies. Michaels is not really that far behind.. None of the `box` craft stores have obviously ever been close to a real art store, but they did have much more than they do of late. I keep stopping by whenever I head into town because they do end up clearencing the good stuff that they still carry. Just have to be patient lol...

Joann is clearancing out their Tombow Mono Drawing Pencil blister pack sets. For $9.97 you get a 12pk of pencils 6B-4H, plus an eraser and sharpener. Also their Liquitex Basics Acrylics tubes are on sale $4..

There are two Hobby Hobby Lobbys within driving distance if I leave the old homestead here... They both have some of their Canson Mi-Tientes papers on clearance. Between the two stores I purchased 54 sheets at $.74 each. It's not my favorite paper, but I do use it with different mediums, and I will give about half of it away.

Isn’t collecting art supplies and tools you think you might some day use or need (especially at a bargain price!) fundamental to art? Am sure it has to required to claim art as a hobby.

Paint Boss, I'm so sorry to hear all this. It would be wonderful if you could find some relief but attitude is everything and you have a good one. ❤️❤️❤️
