This is a pen and ink sketch, made on location about fifteen years ago, in an A4 size sketchbook. It is not often that I get to make a leisurely sketch, on location, but also from the comfort of a hotel room. I've had that luck on a few occasions and this was one of them.
My wife and I were on a holiday to the Kumarakom Lake area in Kerala and I was able to sit in a comfortable chair in the shaded verandah of our cottage, with some eats and tea, and sketch this scene over nearly three hours.
The structures that you see in this sketch are examples of the traditional timber architecture of Kerala, dismantled from their original locations, and erected here.
