tempera paint

I typically use watercolor paper or illustration board. I personally like hot press (smooth) paper because rough paper (the paper with the tooth/texture) is not my cup of tea. But you might feel differently. But I am not a pro either. It works a lot like gouache and the textures paper, like in watercolor, tends to soak up more water. In tempera, it is egg based, so the smooth surface seems to work better in my opinion because there isn't any pooling of water to worry about. I started with Illustration boards back when using tempera and I rather liked the results. Hope this helps. :)
