Scavenger Hunt from Life #25: May 22 - May 30

Joan, thanks for the new list. I might have to go outside. Ha.

JennieJo, love the "old doll", cute. Nice job on the nesting tables and headphones. Is the color oil pastel?

EP, ohhhh, love the colorful landscape. I think we get our vehicles at the same used car lot! Magnolia trees are so beautiful. Didn't know they would grow up north.

Ai, nice shading on the glass case. Too bad the flute is not making music. It is making fine art!
Hey Jo, thanks for your comment; all done with pencil, mostly Derwent

FYI -- Here is the real pic of our cracked clay flute or Ocarina ... I have looked it up; it might have come from Peru !!!

EP, such a fine array of sketches with colorful ink and markers. Fun choices. Haven't had jello since my last surgery about 5 or 6 years ago. Ha.

Joan, excellent finds for your items. Love the indoor with your art friends and the ticket stand is super.

Viovien, hey there! I like your flowers. You can add a little shading on the celophane and maybe a white highlight. You did well.

Ai, that ocarina does look like Peru. I have one that got fired so lost its colorful look.

I sketched on the porch this morning. Getting ready for Gene's second cataract surgery today. On my iPhone with the App, Brushes, and my fingers.

Number 1, something used for art

Vivien - well done. Agree that rendering cellophane is tricky.
Ai - what a beautiful flute! Sorry it broke.
Jo - haha so meta :)

I did more vehicle studies. Ink, marker, and some graphite

EP, two of my sisters are knitters and both work with the circular needles. The carnival had this umbrella ride that took you way up, some sort of cars that went in a circle, a magic carpet something, a merry go round, a teacup-like ride with animals instead of cups, and some games. Nothing to get too excited about unless you were under 10. lol Nice vehicle studies.

Vivien, Happy Birthday! Lovely plant. Cellophane is difficult to do because you use so little color and still need to show the edges. I think it looks good!

Ai, thanks. Your advice to Vivien for the cellophane is good.

Robin, wonderful ink sketches. Love that box filled with stuff and the pink salon chair!

As I expected, I didn't make it back for the rest of the last hunt. My Dad celebrated his 85th birthday yesterday, so there was a lot of family time. No time for sketching.

Joan, thank you for the list! I like the detail and shading in your monochrome sketch and the colors in your outdoor sketch. Beautiful landscape.

JennieJo, nice sketches. I like your recycled paper.

EP, love your colorful sketches.

Ai, good contours and shadows on your rounded shapes. That is a beautiful flute.

Vivien, pretty plant. Happy birthday!

Jo, I like your recursive iPhone sketch.

RobinSusan, lovely set of sketches. I especially like the eyedropper.

I'm still playing with oil pastels. Turns out, this paper is too smooth. Live and learn.
#1 bottle, 9 x 12 paper, oil pastel, about 30 minutes.

Hey, EP, some nice vehicles for a trip down to see us.I like the colors and descriptive lines.

Robin your sketches make me smie, too. Your hatching is so distinctive. I like the pink chair.

Joan, what a unique landscape. One of these days I'll go out to a big lake here and sketch some docks for you.

Angela, cool green bottle in my nemesis oil pastels. Ha.

I sketched before Gene went in for his surgery. We waited and were in prep from 12 noon until 2:14, then he was back at 2:38. The surgery was our shortest wait. Crazy. Check up at 1255 today.

In the small travel sketchbook
#2 vehicle - the chair/bed/transport for Gene from the pre-op to op and back. Micron 02

cellophane I tried a couple of times and but without success.
eyepaint, fantastic still life, beautiful even the first drawing and all the cars.

Angela, nice green bottle.

Got an update from Jeanne.
“I have three things wrong I have erosive arthritis in my wrist up through part of my arm it’s irreversible very painful and progressive. I have calcium deposits on my wrist. And I have a tear in the ligament on my wrist I think she said ligament. I am going to have them check the other hand also because it’s just as painful now and I go to see a hand specialist get an MRI and then they’ll set me up with therapy so they can teach me how to use my hands to make less pain.”

Joe

#3 used for art -- an art life model -- I sketched "Lefty Lucy" at the tail end of her free posing via zoom from New Orleans this morning (the earlier part of her session was the same time as I had to drop my girl to school in Bangkok morning time). Even I caught her at her last pose... It was absolutely fun. I think I saw Joan and Michelle (Joan's sister) in the life sketching session too. I use directwc + ink + a dab of OP for the bright horns of the dino.

Joe, pls. send my best well-wish to Jeanne. I know it cannot help much but I wish her the best of her less pain recovery.

Angela: Thanks. What a lovely color bottle done in OP.

Robin: Thanks. Cool dancing lines set... love your salon chair too.

Joan: Thanks. Gorgeous landscape with the pier on water.

EP: Thanks. Love all your sassy vehicle sketches. So fun to look at their variety.

Joe1: Thanks.

Today, Tone and I had a nice lunch in a foodshop in the middle of Bangkok westside orchard (luckily the place is in our neighborhood). Imagine having a seafood a la cart lunch in the banana+coconut orchard, a very rare occasion in the metropolis of Bangkok.

#4 Found out door -- a secret orchard Thai restaurant.. those 5 people were there enjoying themselves and showed up before us and left the place about same time as us...I was drawing them from our table, done in directwatercolor

Jo - good sketch of hands on the cell phone! Really like your transport chair sketch, too - good details! Here's hoping your husband recovers quickly.

EP - I like your new cars! They look bright and fun - you definitely have your own style. :)

Robin Susan - nice selection of ink sketches! Your pink chair is wonderful - everything has terrific details. Well done!

Joan, beautiful landscape. Wonderful handling of the pier, the ropes, and reflections in the water!

amo - I like your green bottle! OP's are difficult on smooth paper sometimes, just won't/can't bite in there! It's rewarding when you can find that magic combination. I hope to see you keep playing with them! :)

Ai - terrific colors for your "Left Lucy!" That looks like you had fun with it! Your secret orchard Thai restaurant looks so lush. Lovely work! I love seeing your flower in oil pastel - soft and pretty.

Joe: I'm glad you're able to keep us informed on Jeanne. I'm really sorry to read about her wrist issues. :( Hopefully the physical therapy will help her move with less pain.

Hoping I haven't missed anyone - this group moves fast!

Jo, thanks. Well done on the chair/bed.

joe1lt, thanks.

Joe, thanks for the update from Jeanne. Sending her best wishes for healing and pain relief.

Ai, thanks. It's fun to see your sketches of Lefty Lucy after seeing so many of Joan's. I continue to be amazed by your direct WC - people even! Pretty flower.

Terri, thanks. I just found a bunch of cardstock I had stashed away that takes OP okay, so I'm kind of excited about that. A lot of the suitable paper I have is pretty small, which makes OP difficult, since it's hard to get detail. I seem to be in love with the oil pastels, though. I keep wanting to use them over all the other media I have.

#2 A can, oil pastels in 6x8 inch sketchbook, about 25 minutes
#3 A jar, oil pastels (with a little CP) on 8.5x11 cardstock, about 30 minutes

Ai, I have an orinoca similar to that shaped like a turtle. You did such a great job on the family seated at the table. Pretty flower too. You find such interesting places to eat. Great sketch of Lefty Lucy with her Dino outfit. I felt sorry for her...she looked so worn out from being sick. I don't think I would have posed if it was me.

Angela, birthdays for Dads trump sketching. Looks like a green soda bottle...from the party?

Jo, so glad things went well with Gene's surgery. Love the transporter chair.

Joe 1, thank you.

Joe, thanks for the update on Jeanne.

Jeanne, I hope the PT helps you manage the pain in you hands better than it is now. Sorry you are going through this! I know you've been having problems with your hands for years.

Terri, thanks. Yes, this group does move fast!

Angela, you posted again while I was writing my post. Glad you found some suitable paper for the oil pastels. Nice job on the can but I love the detail on the glass jar...super!
