Scavenger Hunt from Life #182: Feb 2 - Feb 14

1 - “Barometer” — tree

associations:

….. barometer
…….. “something that indicates fluctuations” (Merriam-Webster dictionary)
……….. measurements
………….. weather, age, etc.
…………….. tree rings
……………….. weathered tree, bent in harmony with the elements, and trees nearby

— non-virtual sketch
— sketched in my mobile studio
— freehand

— Uniball Signo pen (probably .7mm, but not happy that it doesn’t say)
— pocket sketchbook by Daler Rowney (from WalMart)
— (3.5” x 5.5”) (89mm x 140mm)

— My Re-Learning to Draw Program - review Phase 2 (single objects or small scenes)

tl;dr (too long, don’t read)

———————————

My first “direct-to…..” drawing. This is direct to pen.

Paper was curved, like trying to draw on a roll of paper, and while balancing on my knee, lol….. so distorted and uneven 😅

It was encouragement from a friend that gave me the courage to try this, and it was so much fun, as so many of you know from doing “direct art” often 😂

Hopefully I’ll learn from this 😅 and do more 😍😌

Robin, I like your color swatches. I'm a lazy person and have never done swatches or really even a color wheel.

Pine Cone, lovely sketch of the weathered, bending tree! Congratulations on your direct to ink sketch!!! Sometimes I find sketching in a small sketchbook harder than a larger one. You have to deal with keeping the cover open so it isn't in your way while you're working. I hope we see more of your direct work.

Waiting for our car to be serviced...great to have this funky cafe to hang out ...

You have been busy bees....

Joan your light and shadow was better after you toned down the distance. Very nice. The omelette is great and a super sub. Thanks.

Ned, such cool elephant. Amazing story. The blue hand does look skeletal. Hmmm. The elephant is fun. (When Joan commented I realized where I had seen the elephants.) Thanks on our view. I made a mistake our Horns start next Friday. I was looking all over for the game. Ha.

Ai, thanks. How cool are your lines on the people. I se continuous lines on the second. Nice work. The big Buddha is super big and your sketch is so good. I like your drink. Your assortment on the page with the plant is fun to see. You have some interesting items. I love the planter.

Robin, your color chart is so lovely. You have some beautiful colors. Funny how soothing the coloring is to you and my friend, Regina. It makes me nervous to take so long in completing a piece. That is why I like ink and pastels .. once and done. Hugs.

Pine Cone, your tree has great lines and gesture. Happy you liked the direct process. Sorry about the curly paper. I have not tried Daler-Rowney for sketchpads but I love their pastels and pastel surfaces. D-R was my first set of pastels and got me adicted.

Ai -- there's something special about a pen sketch. I was looking at Jo's just the other day and thinking I need to learn more. I really like the first one with the fellow at the table with booklet or menu. I can see why "Hidden Bangkok" is a popular tourist spot, that gigantic Buddha looks surreal. -- oh the sketches from the cafe are great, I really like the houseplant pot, it's almost glowing!
-- we were typing at the same time. Cool doorway!

Robin -- :) you made me laugh with "ideal for marking blueprints". Those colors are great and you made really smooth gradients. I've never used colored pencils and don't have any... hmmm.....

Pine Cone -- This will maybe sound strange, but for me, when I started using direct ink was when I somehow became free and wanted to draw more. When I was drawing with a pencil before that, I spent so much time erasing and correcting and it wasn't fun and I got caught up in trying to make everything perfect. With the pen, it seems like I'm going to make mistakes and can't do anything about it so somehow it becomes easier... sort of like "mistakes are expected so just don't worry about it and sketch". I read a book by Steven Reddy and he wrote: "draw a line. don't worry what it looks like right now, it's perfect. draw another line...." almost like he was talking to a kindergartner, but it was exactly what I needed and makes sketching fun. I've been off in photography land for a few weeks but the past week sketching again reminded me that it's good for calming the mind. I always feel good afterward, calm and happy... doesn't seem to matter what I draw for that to happen. I hope the tree had some of that for you!

Jo -- yep a week from today! :) One day last year I went to a game at Sonoma State ( only 15 minutes from home ), parked, walked to the field and there was nobody there. It was an away game!

I have a sketch from today on my phone, need to go get it.

Ai, what a fun collection of sketches from that cafe. I would be smiling the whole time I was sketching. The guy you sketched looks like he's watching a TV screen cause he's looking up. That doorway opens onto such a nice view.

Ned, sketching does help to calm the mind. I really enjoy seeing your huge rocks along the coast there. You sketch them well. I laughed at your story about walking to the playing field to find that it was an away game.

Another cold day here...16° and feels like -3°now at 12:25. We had a light layer of snow last night. Don't know if I will venture out today. My friend wanted to meet someplace for indoor sketching like a coffee shop, but I don't know if I want to go out and get cold. lol I have a few things that I can sketch at home. I'll see if she calls.

I did end up staying home all day and did a few things that needed to be done. The temperature now (7:36 PM) is 9° and with the wind chill feels like -12°. Tomorrow is expected to be cold again.

I bought a jalapeño especially for this hunt. I put it together with a few other things that were hanging around.

Joan -- that avocado is great, and so is the pepper! I like the subtle highlight on the pit and the shiny pepper. I want to get some fresh peppers for rellenos... maybe Monday. Was on the tractor most of the day and I'm done in. I wouldn't like 9°, but at least you don't have to mow!

As - agree with Jade. The line quality of the iron gives it a heavy satisfying look. And the thinner lines on the hand look more flexible. Like the pond and bridge scene. The space toy made me smile. Rendered beautifully. That Buddha is almost in the canal! Your student drawings give you a lot of practice drawing people in proportion and perspective. The car service sketch looks like a page full of color and fun!

Joan - pretty snow dunes on the beach. Love the house detail in the vehicle picture. Barbershop made me smile I have not seen a barber pole in years but remember from school they go back to medieval times. . Fruit looks ready to pick up and eat. The shadows are more realistic toned down. Omelette looks yummy.

Ned - Yum bread! Cool experiment. Fun barometer. The had is another neat experiment. The elephant is well sketched and a great find. Reading Sonoma some old commercial popped in my head. All I remember is repetition of “Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino” in a wine commercial. Had to be 50; years ago. The print of both hand and elephant came out very dramatic.

Robin - Your hatching as always makes me stop and study. The iron looks a lot my mother’s iron. She would heat it on the wood stove we had in the kitchen. She also had a water bottle with a stopper that looked like a shower head. She called it the sprinkler bottle. OMG I get a trance like feeling as well. Been doing blending stripes on different papers to both feel and see the difference. Beautiful gradients by the way.

Jo - the porch view looks relaxing.Nicely done. The sketch of Gene may not be portrait quality but it does resemble him.

Pine Cone - major props for drawing direct in ink. That still is a bugaboo for me. I am addicted to my erasers that I use as much as the pencils. Oh you ripped it out. Another bugaboo for me. Some how I feel I am destroying the book. Probably hung over from nuns in grade school teaching to respect books. Your tree is well rendered. Like the few lines to tie it to the ground.

Hoping to get back into sketching🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽

Ai, beautiful doorway scene. I like the potted plant as well. Lovely work.

Ned, oh my. This my first experience on the wrong day and did it twice this week. We went to the dentist on the wrong day and looked for the game. Too funny. Sketching with a pen is a good feeling. I really like seeing your huge rocks and the beautiful water. Excellent sketch and your shading is fun to see. Rellenos sound good. I'm getting hungry and it is 1030 pm. You and Joan and then Fletch talking about your bread.

Fletch, good memories. We always had a sprinkler bottle until they came out with steam irons. I never liked to iron and now I never do. Gene used to iron his shirts. I wore a uniform so had them dry cleaned. We had pants stretchers for jeans. I noticed the torn out page of Pine Cone's sketch, too. Hard for me to do unless I'm giving it away.

Joan, mmm, you have the makings of some guacamole. Looks so good. Nice colors on the avocado and pepper. I put a little peeled tomato in my guacamole sometimes and a touch of lemon or lime. They were predicting more snow and cold for you. We were about 80 yesterday and today. I had the front door open all day. Feeling a bit worried for you.

More tomorrow.

2 - “roof”

— non-virtual sketch
— sketched in my mobile studio

NOTE: For additional details, see attachment here.

Although I sketched this in my mobile studio, I darkened the pale lines later, and erased a bit of decoration near the top. I wish I had left it, but may try again later 😌

Hi everyone 👋😊

Thank you all so much for you kind comments and encouragement 🙏☀️

I want to comment on your beautiful work in the next little while - stay warm and well everyone 🙏❤️

such pleasant, playful conversation....you all amaze me.....What diverse group of art lovers.....What a gift we have here. Sketching at home, in parking decks and dr offices, in car, at beach!!!!!You are awesome!!!

Ned, thanks. I've never cooked with a jalapeño pepper...just used them as models. lol

I'm up really early this morning (5:30AM). I was too uncomfortable being in bed with all the extra heavy covers...besides I wanted to watch Lindsey Vonn compete this morning, but it didn't go well for her. Right now they are getting ready to airlift her off the mountain. That woman has guts and gave it her all! I hope she isn't injured too badly.

Fletch, thanks for all your comments on everyone's sketches. You were good at catching up. Try as I might I can't remember what my mom's iron looked like and I know she ironed everything including underwear. lol I hope you get some sketching done.

Jo, thanks. I should have made guacamole, since I had what I needed. We could have used it with last night's dinner since I made fajitas...ah...a day late. lol If I had bought chips we could have had them with guacamole today while Jerry watched the Super Bowl. I'm not heading out into the cold today to get them. 5° right now...enough said. We are staying warm enough.

Ai, that's a fun way to capture people wearing motorcycle helmets. Good job!

Pine Cone, nice work on the peak of the roof. Just curious, are you sketching with the paper IN the sketchbook or taking it out first? -

Robin, thanks!
