Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/page-10

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.

  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 12 days, with the next hunt starting on the 12th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

As usual you guys are getting the jump on me. Thanks for the list.

Jade, cute items. Not a cat person, but fun to see yours. I'm smiling.

Joan, the umbrellas and tables and chairs are so good. Adore the background wall and balconies.

This is the big fish market here in Venice.

2 - fish (sub for chicken) - watercolors and ink

I went inside St Mark’s Cathedral and stayed to sketch outside. It was so crowded with people blocking my view.

3 - humans - watercolors and ink

3 - statues decorating the outside- grey toned paper with ink, watercolors, and white Posca marker

Jade: Cute Boo !!!

Joan: Wow... what a gorgeous outdoor scene as well as Venice's seafood market. Sorry that you had to deal with so many tourists but you did great of sketching them. I love your Posca pen on the gray ground. It came out super, esp. all the sculpture details.

Joan - All three are great. Love how you show the clutter and mass of the fish table. The crowd in the second. The use of chiaroscuro in the third is great. Very dramatic.

Ai - love your Red Bridge and the photo.

#1 Lamp - Half a sheet I 9x12in sketchpad. This was suppose to be the third drawing with tone experiment but was basically a fail as it was so linear I kept defaulting to lines.

Keep sketching and learning

Ai, thanks so much. I like the charm of the red bridge. Is it red for a particular reason?

Fletch, thanks. I usually look for uncrowded spots to sketch but that didn’t happen by the cathedral. lol Your lamp looks great and would be useful on a dark night. Hard to do it just with tones.

Hi Friends....

Ned - thanks for new list. It occurs how the lists seem common but the art is dynamic from each of us. Thanks for hosting

Joan - wonderful to see the BIG fish market.....right out there in open air....real life is amazing

Fletch - somehow the lamp seems to spiral when I look at it......It tricked you, eh......I am glad you got to sit down to draw....

Jade - cute drawing

Ai - I slid the boardwalk sketch over for a desktop ......very atmospheric, peaceful

JoC - Hi - crzy how the days slip away.....It is still good to get a sketch in now and then, eh....

Robin: Thanks so much...you are so kind. I wish I could do it better; it was drizzling, and the wc was hard to get dry; so I felt I could not control the paints, the way I wish.... but I am very glad that I got it down and you like it.

I do love seeing your paintings Ai. We're often out own worst critic, aren't we? ❤️

Joan, the fish market is so good. I can almost smell it. Oh no! (smile) Your humans seem alive and interested in the museum. The technique you used on the outside is wonderful with the colored paper. Your outdoors isn't showing tonight but I saw it, maybe on the blog. Lovely.

Ai, love the bridge. You wouldn't find me walking on that one! You did a great job on it.

Fletch, you are mastering the tone drawing even if you added some lines The lamp has great descriptive form

Hi, Robin, yes I quite enjoyed sketching this past week.

Hi Jade.

Ned - Cool list, fun mix 👍 Thanks much ☀️

Jade — So adorable, look at those soulful eyes 😄😍 and those cute costumes, all in a row !!! 🎃 Made my day ❤️☀️

Joan — I love the super relaxed outdoor scene, with all the right details to make me wish I was there right about now 😂
Your superb sketch of the people at St. Mark’s Cathedral also has such a genuine feel, I don’t know how you do it 🎨
Your sketch of the outside, made me want to know more about chiaroscuro, and I had fun learning about it. Hopefully I can give it a try someday.

Ai — To me, your Red Bridge scene is truly beautiful, just as it is. I know it must have been frustrating for you out in the drizzle trying to paint 😅 But you captured the moment in every way, including the gentle rainfall, and it’s perfect 😍

Fletch — I agree with everyone - your lamp sketch is excellent. To me it looks like you’re finding a natural and appropriate balance here between the “tones” you’re experimenting with, and the lines that give them “comfort”. Re-read Ai’s words each time you have doubts…..
