Scavenger Hunt from Life #172: Oct 05 - Oct 17

Robin, your hatching on that jacket is awesome! It looks so well loved and used. Love it! Your outdoor scene is fun with the desk lamp cousin.

I finally got to take some photos of recent sketches.

Ai - A bakery school is a cool idea and the breads all look so good in both the photos a your paintings. Am with Joan I could eat my way thru those shelves.

Robin - Love your artist jacket with lots of pockets. Clever association of newspaper with arm chair. I know we have an ice tray but neither o& us can remember where we stored it. LOL

Joan - At first I thought the red striped poles were a Holiday decoration already. 🤭 Proportions and perspective on café sketch are terrific. The yellow and blue pole is when I realized they were not Holiday decorations. That doorway is alluring even if blocked. Jerry’s nest made me smile.

Keep sketching and learning

Looks like I'm behind again. Whew!
Ai, your red uncle is so good and makes me laugh. Super background. The giant pod is a great find and the chair looks comfy. Yep, the duck can go with Joe's Donald. Yummy mango and custard, Well drawn all. Fun to see your legs and chairs in the coffee station. Super job on the chairs and table legs. Phew.... Thanks for the info on the brushes and the demo sketch. Lovely. I love your sub for bookshelf. I could just park myself there and eat it all!! Fun sub for pine cone, too. The outdoor cafe is great, I like the balconies. The old doorway is beautiful. And great to see Jerry. Is he writing his music?

Pine Cone, beautiful sky and moon. Good find for texture!! Love it. Love the goose. You are definitely back in the drawing mode. Nice shading and hatching. Thanks for all you tips and showing your work.

Joan, oh wow! Love the clothes line. The scene is spectacular. Thanks for the info on your drawing boards.. My foam core is all wearing out. Ha. Yes, you can eat for all of us!! Yummy seafood .... and pasta. Your sketches are "mahhhhvalous". The flowers and gondola poles/dock are so colorful.

Fletch, the bookcase and chair are amazing when I consider the size. I would have a blob!!

Ned, good you are home safe and sound. The sketch is great. Looks like maybe the ink dried a bit. Added some extra texture! You do well with a small amount of tools.

Robin, wow on the jacket. Fun finds for the dispenser and all. Oh, haven't seen an ice cube tray in years. Exciting.

We went down to the park yesterday. Gene went with me early (9) and napped in the car where it was comfy and cool while we set up. Joanna came and they left about 11. Had a good time helping folks sketch. We gave out sketchbooks, pencils, etc. Seemed like everyone had fun. I saw a few old friends so a bonus. My sketch was done as I showed how to use the different pens. Helped the pencil users with how to shade, etc. Some kiddos and moms mostly. They were painting clay figures for Halloween next to us so saw more people and colorful stuff going on. I didn't really have time to sit and sketch. They had music, folklore dancing, Native American drum group like they have at Pow Wows. Lots of food and other hands on fun. It got very hot by noon and I was happy to escape at 1pm.

Number 2 rock or texture - sub the old car. I've sketched it many times and it is really deteriorating. Just like me. Ha. In the Canson travel sketchbook with several different pens. Mostly Ohuhu and Micron.

Gene's shirt says, "Unfortunately, Killing them with kindness, is taking longer than expected"

Pine Cone, I like your goose, the hatching on the wings is great, nice smooth lines.

Ai -- the bread "studio" is fun, that's a neat idea. Your sketches are great and lively! You've reminded me I need to feed my sourdough starter that has been waiting 4 months...

Robin -- that jacket is wonderful! Always enjoy the colored ink sketches.

Joan -- The blue, green, grey in that doorway is really nice. All of them are great.

Jo -- :) we were typing at the same time again. That old car looks ready to roll in your sketch!

Jo - love the old car. Gene looks good. love the hats. Sounds like some kind of organized art event. Kewl.

#3 Electric outlet - graphite 9B sketch. Image is 6x6 inches. Goal was trying to loosen up. Intent was there but habit took over LOL

Keep sketching and learning.

5 - “seed pod” - variations on a duet of seed pods

— virtual sketch

— iPad Pro and Apple pencil
— Procreate app

— freehand……. I never use the Procreate feature that straigtens lines, or rounds out circles for the artist. Also, I never use the grid overlay that Procreate offers. However, those are valid artistic tools, and I don’t wish to discourage their use.

— My Re-Learning to Draw Program - Phase 2 (single objects or small scenes)

——————————

I found two similar seed pods by coincidence the same day or next that Fletch posted his list !!! (See photo at bottom of post.)

They were the only two in the area, so maybe they flew in from far away 😃 My base sketch incorporated aspects of each of the two pods (shown in the photo below) into one pod. I’m going to try to save the pods, so let me know if you would like me to take a pic of them with a ruler for scale.

Next, I painted several versions from the same base, and it was a lot of fun. For me, each one fits a different mood.

Joan: Thanks. Awesome, yellow and blue, zinnia alike, lovely street lamp, and the cool work corner for Jerry.

Fletch: Thanks. Great outlet.

PineCone: Thanks. Nice seedpod in digi.

Jo: Thanks. What a fun sketch of the classic. Your art outing day seems so fun and inspiring. Glad Gene can go with you.

Robin: Thanks. Cool jacket, and ice cube tray.

Ned, Jade, and all: Thanks.

Fletch, thanks for your comments. I wonder if there is something strategic about the colors on the poles…any deep meanings.i like your electric outlet with the variety of plugs.

Jo, your morning at the park sounds like fun and a nice way to get people interested in sketching. Who organized the event? I love the old car and the variety of line thicknesses. Cars like that have such character. You and Gene are looking good!

Ned, grazie! There is a lot to sketch here if I can find a good spot to sit and sketch.

Pine Cone, I love the colorful pods. They look so much like hangars. We called them poly noses as kids and actually liked to wear them on our noses for fun…memories. I wonder if kids still do that. Our neighbor had a maple tree so there was a good supply of them around. We had a chestnut tree. The chestnuts were great for carving.

Ai, glad you like them.

Ai and Joan and Everyone — Thanks for your kind words !!!! I haven’t had a chance to comment in a while, but will try to catch up soon 🙏

——————————

For now, just want to add the following caveats to my previous SH #172 post using my iPad and ProCreate. For folks who haven’t tried sketching or painting in ProCreate or any of the other apps, its a lot of fun. I want everyone to know that you can truly sketch, draw, and paint in apps, if that is what you desire, although they are all multi-faceted, with other choices as well. Apps will accommodate your style more and more as you go along.
Fun, fun, fun 😂

CAVEAT 1: My personal choice is to sketch, draw, and paint in ProCreate with brushes and erasers. I do NOT paint into “selections” or “masks”. If I stray outside of where I want to be, I erase 😅

CAVEAT 2: I’m re-learning how to draw. Therefore, rather than striving for *looseness* at this point, I’m trying to re-establish hand-eye coordination and accuracy, and re-learning the use of the tools I currently have.

CAVEAT 3: “Looseness” is on my list of “re-learning Phases”. But it is way down there at the bottom, because I have so much to try to regain, before the looseness might come naturally.

Pine Cone - You brought back memories for me similar to Joan’s wearing the pods on our noses. Excellent job and the color experiments look like fun. Your list of caveats made me smile as I am trying hard to loosen up and it was last night I realized two things 1) fewer details which seems obvious and 2) No lines! That one brought a few things into clarity. I do well with dry media but as soon as I pickup a brush I am lost and it clicked. Lines. You don’t paint lines you paint colors and tones. So to loosen up I am going to try drawing tones not lines which might also help me with watercolor. .😎

Joan - You have the same style even using Procreate! Nice work. Your continuous line drawing like your non dominant hand drawing amazes!

Keep sketching and learning

Pine Cone, I like how you craft the shapes when you draw. I usually wing it and you can tell. Ha. Your pods look so graceful and lively. Love your colors.

Ai and Joan, my day out was great. It was a city thing with so much going on. Gene enjoyed getting out as well.

Joan your sink area is so well done. I'm not patient enough to do many continuous line. Your drawings make me smile. You sure take on challenges .. I go for easy. Evil grin. Awww, pigeon is fun.

Fletch, Joan, JoC, Ai, Jade, Ned, Robin, thanks much for your kind comments - they keep me going ❤️‍🩹❤️

Robin — Nifty sketch of your happy geranium and purslane in the window. Love the next batch of sketches, nice and loose, and your lovely sage jacket is fantastic 😂

Fletch — That was a cool sun trail from Ned ! Good remembrance 😊 Your bookcase is excellent, and the chair looks comfy with its soft cushion contrasting well with the shelving and books 👍 I like your electrical outlet sketch - detailed, but not fussy - not sure what you could have done different, given your high skill level with graphite ??? You did good ✍️

Joan — Lol, I was thinking the same thing that the pods look like hangers, but I’ve never heard of wearing them on your nose 😄
Love your “texture” painting on page 2. And not just for the texture, but also for the way you painted the water, with its reflections 😂 And your high angle view of the trees and buildings gives me a feeling for the scope of your efforts whenever you go to Venice 🎨 Same with the narrow look down the long rows of buildings, the laundry hanging over the canal, I feel like I’m there 🌍 Love the sketches with the poles, the foliage, the structures, the water, hubby in his nest, the sink area - everything so beautifully done, integrated with such care - wonderful to see 😂
You did it !!! You found a pigeon 😂 Lovely, gentle sketch 😍
But your sketch of the two people sitting near the boat is the one that has enchanted me….. something about the tenderness of her face comes across, the slight lean of each toward the other….. the nuanced blues they share with the boat in front and the pole behind…… 💞
I’m grateful to see your personal sketches of these places you find and share with us. Thank you for taking us with you ❤️

Ai — Fun association, for your amazing tourist boat, and evocative orchids - gorgeous vases as well 😌
Wowow - exceptional rattan chair, so lovely in sage and soft golden tones 🎨 and fascinating seed pod 👍 and your duck still life made me smile 🐥
Oh my goodness - your sketch of the mirror reflection is amazing 😃 what a great idea, and fantastic work- love everything about it !!! Thanks for showing the initial sketch too - very cool. Also, thanks for the brush info and Theo post ✍️
Wish I could visit the artisan bread studio 😋 Your sketches are scrumptious and love the photos too 😋😋

JoC — Your silhouette of the trees is fantastic. Has such character and grace 😂 I can’t believe you did that with your fingers 😳
Thanks for showing us your event at the park Saturday. I’m glad Gene was able to share that with you. Loved the photos of you and Gene and the truck. Super event with you getting people involved with art, plus music and dancing….. love your sketch of that rusty car ❤️

Ned — The trees you sketched are very cool, both in your sketch and in real life. Thanks for the pic, and I’m with Fletch - artistic license improved the view !!! ☀️ And welcome home 😅 Wonderful sketch - lovely to see the rocky beach again (“society where none intrudes”) 🌊
I hope you get a chance to sketch the ancient fallen tree trunks eventually. Sounds really interesting 👀

Fletch said, “Did you save all those older textures or go back and find them?”

I went vack to WC to see if they were there and get the links I posted. I was surprised to find they were still there 😅

Fletch also said, “….I am trying hard to loosen up and it was last night I realized two things 1) fewer details which seems obvious and 2) No lines! That one brought a few things into clarity. Great insights 💡 When you explain things, it always makes good sense. Thank you so much 😃🙏 These are keepers !!! 👏

Jo, thanks. I’m glad yo and Gene got out for the art event. It is good for the soul,

PinevCone, thanks so much for your thoughtful comments on everything I posted. I have done a few sketches in that same spot where I sketched the couple. I like observing the way they interacted with each other. They were like a little story in front of me.

I went to the Artist House, Bangluang Canal, briefly again this late afternoon...
