Scavenger Hunt from Life #170: Sep 11 - Sep 23

Joan: Please tell all your art friends that all those bigger than life-size art packages are super. Love them all and your art group are so awesome. I hope your back feels better.

Joan - amazing group project.. 👏 👏 👏 well done you all. So creative. I also loved your paintings, great ship and that bridge too!
Fletch - I really like the deep red of the candle. I'm guessing it can take a while to get back into painting but I think you did a great job 👍
Ned - I love the buttery colour you got on this picture.. beautiful. 💛
Ai - those Walkie talkies are so cute! 🥰 Very nice job on the bottles / vases too.

Everyone else 👋❤️

Here's what I made yesterday (thank you gift and card) for #2 red 🍓

Ai, thanks. Now the group can get back to regular sketching. We will have a model this week.

Jade, thanks so much. Your sketch of the crochet berry is so cute! Great idea to make it into a gift card.

2 - “white” - tree trunk with [mostly] white bark

tl;dr (too long, don’t read)

— non-virtual sketch
— sketched from inside my mobile studio

— Pentel mechanical pencil (0.5)
— medium sketchbook by PenGear (from WalMart)
— (6” x 9”) (15.2cm x 22.8cm)

— freehand

NOTE: For some reason, this tree had “regular” darker bark near the base, going up a couple of feet — unlike the same kind of tree right next to it 🤔

tl;dr (too long, don’t read)

I began sketching this from my mobile studio while it was raining. I wanted to try, thinking of all the things Joan goes through when she sketches from her mobile studio.

I was proud of myself for trying 😅 But about 30 seconds after I began to sketch, the rain turned into a torrential downpour. I was maybe about 40 feet or more away from this tree. I couldn’t really see much in the downpour, but I continued trying for awhile.

But eventually I gave up because part of my car was badly soaked when I had to open a back window to defog the other windows (since I have no working air conditioning or heat anymore) (my car is over a quarter of a century old). I was trying to sketch from the far side window and it was impossible 🌧️
🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️

So I had to leave this unfinished (like the previous sketch I posted, only worse lol).

I didn’t even get to define or sketch the extensive and lovely area around the base of the tree, but perhaps another day.

3 - “nozzle” - 😆 some of the clouds that were part of the torrential downpour system that ended my effort to sketch the tree in my previous sketch. These particular clouds though were further away and more differentiated than the ones directly over my car, pelting me like crazy lol 😜

After giving up on the previous sketch, I tried driving for awhile, but the fogging inside my car was making that impossible too, so I pulled over, used a towel to dab at the windshield inside, and tried to sketch at least a sense of the clouds directly in front of me. I didn’t have a clue how to go about it, but I tried 🌧️

Sorry about the bad image. That is NOT pencil smeared in various areas. Either the paper is bad, or maybe I need to clean my iPhone lenses. I don’t know.

Pine Cone, welcome to the world of sketching from your mobile studio in the rain🌧️...yes, the windows get very foggy no matter what you do unless you keep the car running which I don't do. I just turn the car on and use the wipers and then turn it off again. You did a fantastic job on the tree trunk. I am in AWE of the detail you did get done!!! :D Even unfinished it is lovely! I like your attempt at doing the clouds. That's hard to do with just lines. You are really doing well! Don't sell yourself short.

5 - childhood (face painting at the art show yesterday) - graphite Do you think they had enough people watching???IMG_8358.jpeg

6 - steeple (sub for nozzle) - watercolors

Vivien, sorry about the beautiful flowers. Weather has been dry here, so opposite problems.

Joan, the bridge scene with the loungers is so cool. The red ship is amazing. You know it is one of my favorites now! Oh, my! Fun photos of you and the big packaging. I bet the folks really liked looking. Were they for sale? Glad your back is better. My foot seems better one day then hurts the next. Hmmm. Your face painter sketch tells a good story. The church steeple is beautiful. I saw a pretty steeple today and thought it should be on the list. I was surprised to get home and see you sketched one.

Ned the butter dish is so nice. I like the color and shadows.

Ai, the walkie-talkies are so cute. What fun, well done! Lovely lines and shading on the empty containers. Wow!

Fletch, I love the red candle. Your watercolor skill looks great to me. Nice shadows, etc. Not fond of Strathmore paper in general. Looks good.

Jade, cute card and knitted strawberry. Good job!!

Pine Cone, you are doing well from your mobile studio. The tree and bark is just so nice. Clouds are very hard with "lines" You captured the feeling of clouds. Sometimes the dents or wrinkles in paper show up as shadows in photos. Irritating but good cameras, ha.

I finally did a quick sketch, about 1/2 page in the big Conda sketchpad book with Ohuhu Pen .2 Number 1, footwear.

Ai -- those walkie talkies are super cute. It made me smile to think of kids talking to each other with them. The containers have this nice light airy feel to them!

Fletch -- The candle is good! The top part has good depth to it. I have a visual journal here and I really need to use it... I have a very bad habit of thinking of it as somehow "precious" and then I don't use it and when I do I'm too careful or worried about making a mistake. I need to just start using it!

Joan -- very fun to see the cool creations! The pencil sketch is great. The steeple is "direct watercolor", isn't it?

Jade -- that strawberry is very cute, I like the smooth lines on the leaves.

Pine Cone -- the detail and bark texture is great... honestly I kind of like it the way is... it draws the eye to the detail you decided to draw first. Some very nice sketches have detail in one place and then little or no detail anywhere else. I like your attempt at clouds too... I've tried with lines a few times and can't figure it out at all :)

Jo -- hi! I like your pen sketches ( I always do like them :) )

I found this oyster shucker here and it brought back a childhood memory. When I was a kid, my dad made some shrimp traps and we put them out from his little boat. While we were waiting for the shrimp to arrive, my dad found a place with oysters along the shore, and we stopped and ate some right off the rocks. I'm sure he used this shucker. I ate several oysters but wasn't so sure about them, and it kind of put me off oysters until I tried them again in my 20's. Straight off the rocks was a bit much for a little kid. We did enjoy the prawns that night!

Jo: Thanks. Fantastic group of footwear.

Ned: Thanks...I love the reflection off the wood handle and the shine of metal blade too.

Here are mine... done during my lunch break at my office.

#7 white -- a double blank spread pages of my sketchbook
#8 an open book -- from "Fuzzy set engineering" textbook...

PineCone I really like your bark sketch too. You have a real skill for those detailed pictures. But I'm also in admiration of how you, Joan and others suffer for your art, out in the car / in the rain! I realised when I came to this site that I only like drawing at home on my sofa! 🤣

Ned - great drawing and story.. it's interesting hearing the history of your pictures. Oysters are an acquired taste aren't they! 😝

Joan - lovely sketch of face painting (lots of 👀 watching lol!) and love the steeple.. you capture these images so well.

Jo - I loved all your feet 👣 really well done with the ankle angles (!) and shoes.

Ai - nice sketches of the books. I always find "pages" a challenge.. you did them well. 📚

Everyone else - hi 👋

Jo, thanks. The giant objects were "for display purposes only." lol I'm glad they were a big hit. Nice to see your collection of footwear. I am busy trying to get somewhat organized for our trip to Venice (between visits to the doctor and PT) so I haven't been doing much for the hunts. My back is a lot better but I still have some discomfort that I'm dealing with.

Ai, great that you had time to sneak in some quick book sketches during your lunch break!

Ned, thanks. I love your story about eating the oysters straight off the rocks and your dad using that oyster shucker. Nice sketch of it especially the shading on the wooden handle. I like oysters but prefer raw clams. A friend's husband has an area in the Great South Bay where he commercially raises oysters. He took a few of us sketchers out there one day and let us sketch the guys at work on the platform out in the middle of the water. It was interesting to watch and learn about how they are harvested.

Jade, thanks so much.

Joan - your artist friends look a lot happier with their finished pieces than they did making them when they all looked so intent. The ‘people watching’ comment made me laugh. You captured them well. The steeple painting looks very impressionistic.

Jade - Two pretty creations for a thank you 👍🏽

Pine Cone - the heavier rain is Mother Nature telling you your sketch is done. 😎. It is beautiful work even unfinished. Some time checkout Michelangelo’s sketch book. Many are unfinished. Nice cloud study.,

Jo - I agree on Strathmore water color paper but I do like their drawing/sketching paper. Footwear sketches are cool. Especially like the bottom two where you went for the darks adding strong contrast.

Ned - All the Strathmore watercolor papers seem to pill if you try to add layers. One wash they are good but that is about it. They are good for practice. Love the oyster shucker and the history to go with it.😎

Ai - nice line work on white and open book.

Grapes, Robin, vivien -👋🏽👋🏽

Keep sketching and learning
Fletch

Joan when my back acts up I have 2 treatments. If it is bad I go to the chiropractor if just uncomfortable I use Australian Dream and back exercises.

Fletch, thanks for your comments. I think we were all happy with the sculptures, especially seeing them all together. I had to look up what Australian Dream was. I had never heard of it before. Doing a lot of back and core exercises at PT.

Spent the morning running errands, including buying a new printer for the computer. It is sitting in the box waiting for me to come and unleash it. Our other one died and we have a lot of things to print/copy before our trip. Guess who gets to set the whole thing up!

I figured a continuous line was a good way to get several items done. Of course I had to add watercolor to the ink lines.
7 - butterdish

Everyone — I’m sorry I haven’t had time to comment for awhile, but I look forward to doing that later 🙏 Luv you all, and luv your art ❤️

JoC said, “Sometimes the dents or wrinkles in paper show up as shadows in photos. Irritating but good cameras, ha.”

Thanks JoC 🙏 Now I understand. This is another one with a bar of shadow across it. I was erasing, the paper dented, and it really shows in the photo. I’m glad I don’t have to freak out about my phone cam 😅

I’ve loved dinosaurs all my life 💚❤️💚

There are a lot of Sinclair gas stations around here, and I noticed that the dinosaurs aren’t necessarily identical. When I couldn’t fit “Dino” on the page at first, I drove around and was able to draw bits from other ”Dinos” so that it all fit on my pocket sketchbook page.

It was soooooo much fun 😁😍😂
