Welcome to the Scavenger Hunts from Life. The Hunts were started in 2006 by Jamie Williams Grossman as a way to practice with prompts. Artists have come and gone while forming some lasting friendships. We hope you will join in and tune up your sketching skills. All levels and techniques are welcome. We hope you can have some good times here. You can travel the world seeing the sketches of items at hand by the artists

If you’ve participated in at least one Scavenger Hunt and have time to host one we would really appreciate it. You can sign up by posting your name on the current hosting schedule in the Art From Life forum here:

https://creativespark.art/threads/scavenger-hunt-from-life-host-sign-up-list.2481/

Here are the rules for the Hunt:

  • All everyday common items on the list must be sketched from life – not imagination or photo reference.
  • Each object you draw can count for only one item on the list, no matter how many shapes/parts/colors that object contains. This was agreed on by unanimous vote among the participants.
  • You may place multiple objects together in a drawing or painting, and may count these objects as separate items, but no single object can count for more than one item.
  • All items posted must be numbered. Count them as you go. The first item you post will be #1 regardless of its place on the list. Do them in whatever order you wish, but count them in the order in which you sketch them, from 1 to 26.
  • Do as many or as few of the items as you like. You don’t have to finish the entire list to participate. The Scavenger Hunt “week” will last for 9 days, with the next hunt starting on the 9th day.
  • Please tell us your size, surface, medium, and the amount of time it took you for each sketch. We love hearing about your subjects and setups. Photos of your subjects are welcome.
  • Have fun!
*** If you have some hunt sketches completed but little time to read/comment, please post your sketches anyway. Commenting is appreciated but not required.

Our car tire picked up a nail. So we had to fix our tire and the mechanic had to unscrew the wheel hub.

#2 containing small parts...5 wheel hub screws
#3 wood ...my kid's school gazebo

Ai, thanks for the new list. You got a good start. I love the sketch of the interior of the wheel hub(?) and the jack. At least you got a sketch out of the problem. Nice work on the gazebo.

Ai, pretty sunflower. Great drawing of the wheel. We had a flat as well on the big Expedition and had to buy a new tire. I wasn't there for the switch. Son David was with Gene. The gazebo has lovely lines.

Hi Joan and all the rest....

Ai - i like the flower & gazebo - and making the best of an unlucky event!

this is #1 public space (indoors)
met a couple friends at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston - practicing drawing on 8x6 paper using pencil with soft lead (B2?) and eraser (a lot of eraser! did her head over 3 times!)

Ai -- love the flower, is that direct WC or did you outline in pencil?? I am going to try direct again sometime.... good job on the hub and gazebo! Ugh, I've had to change tires a few times... seems like it's always when you need to be somewhere!

Stephanie -- great sketch of the Venus statue!

I sketched from my car on the way back from walking at the beach.

Thanks all and Jo, Joan, Stephanie, and Ned for kind support.

Ned: The sunflower was in directwatercolor. I love your sketch of the blue shop building. Wow... such a peaceful route around your home. And at a quick glance your sketch has a bit inking and coloring style alike of Joan.

Stephanie: Wonderful effort, such a lovely sculpture sketch, eraser or not... beautiful shading and proportion.

Joan: Thank you so much.

Jo, sorry about the flat. Glad Gene had company when it was repaired.

Stephanie, lovely sketch of the statue at the museum. She looks like she would fit nicely with the ones I sketched recently. The nice part about the statues is they don't move. lol

Ned, great job on the rickety building. Doesn't seem like they have too many customers...or were you there at an off hour? Looks like a place I should see here, before they come along and turn it into some slick new place.

I have a sketch that I'll post later. Too much to do right now. Our development came and told us they are replacing all the water pipes along one side of the connected units, so we have to empty all the cabinets and closets on that side of the building. I've already spent 2 days emptying my walk in closet and it isn't finished yet. I set the timer for 15 minutes on the computer before I get back to work.

stephanie, always great fun to go out with others. Fantastic job on Venus!

Ned, mmmm, the blue restaurant looks great. Does have a Joan flair. Nice to get out and about again.

Ai, hi there.

Joan, What a bummer. Almost like moving to have to empty everything. Maybe you will find something old to sketch a new way. Ha.

We are home today doing some chores. Maybe a sketch is in the air.

Jo, I've already hauled bags and bags to the dumpster, and bags of clothing and assorted stuff to be donated. At least there will be less stuff around once I'm done. (If that ever happens.)

1 - flower - watercolors and ink

Jo, Joan, all : Hello... Hope you get things done as you plan for your day.

Joan: Great job decluttering. I am trying mine but it went too slow. Beautiful clusters of flowers.

Joan, I feel for you in the moving/saving stuff. Hugs. Your flowers are gorgeous. So rich and luscious.

I sketched at the easel. Pushed to do other things so about 30-45 minutes. Pastel sketch on wiped off cookie paper. Ha.
Paper is about 9 x 12
Number 1 glass - red
Number 2 ceramic - cup, not such a bright red, white and blue gift from Joanna
Number 3 metal - pewter cup, looks silver not pewter
Number 4 flower - felt flowers

Jo: Your dust piece is so gorgeous. You got the texture of the glass cup and the pewter cup perfectly.

Jo -- oooh! like the shine and reflections on those surfaces. You and Ai made me laugh saying mine had something of Joan's flair... I don't think so but it wouldn't surprise me if something has rubbed off from being here. Maybe after 10 more years I can get closer. I did think of Joan when I put the dark ink in the windows... they were lighter ink and didn't look right and I thought about Joan's windows and reached for the darker ink -- then it felt "better". :) Going to a baseball game this afternoon, which always means it will be a good day.

Joan -- love the riot of colors in that one! That crab restaurant is only open on weekends during crab season..... Sometimes they sell crab directly off their boat without opeing the resturant.

Ai, thanks. It wasn't my idea to declutter, but since I had to empty closets I got rid of some things.

Jo, I love that red glass that keeps appearing in your pastel paintings. Nice reflection in the pewter vase!

Ned, you know that if I had seen that crab shack I would sketch it. I like things that look a little "rustic." I'm ready to come out for some crab!

Spent more time emptying closets today. They will be ripping open the ceilings to replace the pipes. Instead of sketching outdoors I did a still life on one of my breaks.;)

2 - red - watercolors and ink - continuous line and then color added.
3 - yellow
4 - blue
5 - green
